Yep, it's true.
Well, most of the time it wasn't painted, but depends on the time period and place. Paint was mostly used on helmets as far as I know and in a few exception at other parts too, but breastplate and most of the armours were either got with some method gold and/or silver (and sometimes copper but that's entirely different) layer. Then there was the heat treating process, which could get you very fancy colors if you knew what to do. That basically gives a few microns thick layer which is pretty easy to scrub off.

But here is an example of a helmet after decades of museum care

that's not a jack of plates. That's a fencing doublet/jacket.
This is a jack of plates

generally speaking those things weren't as heavy as people think they were. one handed weapons rarely go above 1,5 kg even for maces. With a flanged mace head you doesn't even need that much force especially that it was usually used from horseback.

actually that was Henry VIII helmet, he got it From Maximilan I Holy Roman Emperor as a gift. They were BFF.

mostly because nearly all the decoration, paint and other colors either degraded over time or scrubbed off by retards in the museums over the centuries

>What's the best way to study armor so you can create your own functional designs?
look at pics of original ones. Look at original ones IRL. Maybe wear a few repo. Talk about it with actual blackmisths or reenactors.
If you want to go REALLY deep in it you have to study a little warfare too and understand WHY did the armors looked like what they looked like. It's a very complex thing and even back in the day people used a lot o trial and error to figure out the best shapes and forms, although the error part may or may not could cost your life. There were a fuckton of transitional armours when new weapons or tactics come into play and after a few decades the ones that weren't that useful died out. Sometimes because it wasn't that good functionally, sometimes because it was too expensive or too much work to make it; etc.
It's a very complex subject and you have to decide how deep you want to go.

>Where do you guys get your armor references from?
there are a few good sites like armourarchives or myarmoury also you can look up the websites of museums, sometimes they put a lot of good pics online, like in the wallace collection.
There is also an option for a few museums to use google earth and look at their stuff through that, like here
https://www.google.hu/maps/@48.2051532,16.3642472,3a,75y,179.06h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1swdd8rYrPdqyWF1nb4efWQA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Also /tg/ frequently have arms and armour threads, sometimes you can even find people there who know their shit

little plus info to clarfy things: as you can see on the photos I posted people doesn't really shoot in the stance as they do it in the video. Basically because they are using smaller and weaker bows.
The reason is that as I said for a strong bow you need all of your muscles, you don't just draw with your arm but with your back and several other muscles too. this happens around 150 pound strong bows. As it gets weaker it needs less strenght to draw it so you don't have to care as much about the stance.

although for the archery stuff a little plus info: it really matters how strong is the bow, because if you want to shoot with a stronger one you need a totally different stance and stuff like that. You really cannot draw the strongest one with the wrong stance and the wrong method, etc
