Penny arcade pick of him drawing on a Surface Pro

Ok, What can people tell me about the Samsung Slates? They are getting generally positive comments.

I read in an update that the drivers were available now. That was one thing that made me more interested in it.
Is there an ETA on the Surface 2?

I'm gonna go read that link to polycount now.

Does anyone have other devices they can recommend or say to stay away from?

I wasn't really planning on getting a cintiq... the price and the negative things I've heard and read has kept me away.
I don't have a Mac for the same reason.

So, I have a question for you, friends.
I'm looking to upgrade my digital drawing option.
Currently I'm using my Samsung Galaxy Ta 10.1, which does fine for me at this level of skill, but as I improve I'm thinking I'll need something that has more functionality.
Stuff like pressure sensitivity and better drawing programs available.
After reading the review of the Surface Pro that Mike did over at Penny Arcade, I was planning on getting one this summer. He loved it, said it was his new mobile drawing choice.

Then last night I saw a couple posts about other devices.
I know that I can't afford any of the big Cintq's or Wacom's. I do have a 6" bamboo that a friend gave me when he upgraded, but I haven't been able to really get over the whole thing with not looking at what I'm drawing.

I prefer looking at the "page"
Which is why I like using Sketchbook Mobile on my tablet. I can see where the lines are going.

Anyway, last night I saw a post about other devices. I think they were thinkpads.. I can't find the thread now to double check. But it was implied that I can find them on eBay in the $300 range.

Whatever I get is going to be what I use for a while. I'm happy to spend more if it means that I'm getting a good device that I will be happy with.

So, what I'm asking for here is suggestions or warnings for and against the different types of drawing devices you guys have had experience with.

TLDR- I'm gonna buy a new toy. Which one should I get?

I really like this.
What brush are you using to get that result?
It's almost blocky or pixelated in some places, but it looks great.

nothing wrong with that.
Just so long as you're having fun drawing

Start up a portrait thread and see how it goes.
If it doesn't cause too much of a dust up I'll hop on board.

I'm playing around with different techniques now to see what works faster

I'm really digging your style Anon.

I agree, perhaps the time limit should be eliminated and instead the focus is on working from other people's poses.

this exercise isn't for any one particular type of person.
I had the idea and thought that if we played around with it a bit we might be able to build a fun game.
10 min might be too short of a time.. I don't know.
I know it's making me move far faster than I normally do.... but I also think that I'm having fun and improving on some techniques.

If you want to take 15 min, or 20 min and do it your way... go for it.
Paint it, smear tea on a napkin and draw with a toothpick if you want.

There isn't any other point to this game at this level other than to try to figure out a way for us all to have fun with it.

I want to hear from people, what would make this more fun for each of you?

>> No.1464114 [View]

Ok,
after roughly 24 hours there are 12 poses to choose from and half a dozen or so people have participated.

I'm going to keep going with this to see if more people join, but if anyone has any suggestions for how to make it more appealing please share them so we can keep improving the game.

Here comes another batch of poses

>> No.1463894 [View]

Alright,
Time for an assessment.

is the 10 min restriction too short? too long?

My initial idea was to get people to be quick with their drawing, but I know that I personally draw slowly... It is forcing me to go with my initial ideas more and trust my strokes.

>> No.1463579 [View]

I'll be back on tomorrow with more poses.
Hopefully you guys are liking this game and more people start to play
