Don't be discouraged by my lack of progress in this image. I like drawing but I'm not as focused on it as the people who frequent this board. I also have obstacles specific to me and admit in the image that I get distracted by other interests.

I do get why it gets posted and I do look back at that progress image with embarrassment.

I wouldn't say I've reached my art goals or don't want to improve, just that they're not my highest priority. I'm content with my art level and the pace of my improvement (mainly being small details that stand out more to me than other people) but I do still look up things to help me improve.

>>5196871
I didn't set up anything. A link was provided in the first thread I came to that keeps track of each time the same image gets posted on /ic/ and I check it every now and then.

Googling that term comes up with multiple definitions. Which one do you mean? Because one of them is that thing where people draw a model that is in the room which isn't exactly a sensible idea in a pandemic. Also the classroom environment isn't really one I do well in.

If you mean starting drawings off with circles/ovals and lines like in this picture sometimes I do something like that. Not always but looking at pictures like this one have influenced the way I start drawing.

There's probably a more specific meaning but the sites that come up have the same description problem that most "how to" art guides have.

The funny thing is that isn't even brought this thread to my attention this time, a comment on DeviantArt did.

Yep. Back in 2018 someone told me about a thread using this image, I showed up and was provided with a link that would update whenever said picture gets posted here. I occasionally check to see if people are asking questions I can answer.

Things that have held back my progress are more specific to me. Looking back at that image for example you'll note that I spent one year experimenting with Photoshop and then had several "didn't draw as much as I wanted" years in a row.

While I can't say my autism hasn't had an impact on my ability to improve (it's certainly why just reading art guides doesn't help much) there are more obstacles that are unrelated to it. I have a lot of interests and fall behind on most of them with art just being one example of it. My recent art projects have helped me make some progress but it's still very slow and often only details that stand out to me rather than areas other people are going to care about.

The definition of a hobby is
>an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure
So yes they are hobbies. And they're not my only hobbies, just the most notable examples. Tabletop gaming, collecting Pokémon cards, reading (though I'm really behind on that), writing and going to conventions are other examples along with the one you already knew about which is drawing.

Watching TV shows, watching movies, playing video games and just spending time with my friends who have similar interests. All things I can and have fallen behind on just as much as I have with my art. So many shows I'm behind on or haven't started, weeks where I don't watch any movies, video games I haven't finished or started and friends I rarely see or haven't seen in years.

>Has anyone ever suggested to you that you may have some kind of mental disability?
I have autism
>Are you just lazy?
Sometimes but often it's procrastination or other things that get in the way.
>How often do you draw?
It varies. Sometimes it's almost every day of a month, other times I don't draw anything for a month.

A few questions here
>How old are you by now?
31
>Why haven't you tried to improve your humans?
I have but knowing what needs to improve is one thing, figuring out the how is another.
>you don't have a cellphone to take a photo of a sketch?
I'm not sure I get this question. I do have a mobile phone yes.
>>4336490
I disagree but the ways I've improved stand out more to me than an outside observer. My methods have changed and I've made small improvements. I'm fine making slow progress because as I've said in other threads art is just one of my hobbies, if I focused too much on it it would impact my other interests and get in the way of just drawing for fun which would only make me loose focus anyway defeating the entire purpose. I need to be in a position when I can feel comfortable putting more focus into improvement and until then the little changes that stand out more to me are fine.

It's not really a tragedy. While yes I flat out admit there were years where I barely did that much drawing but that was mostly because of my focus shifting towards various different interests and taking different courses at college. By the last year of that image I've met several great friends who had an important impact on my life.
>>4336953
I have tried it a few times back when I was doing sprite edits more frequently. I wasn't very good at it but at some point I would like to give it another shot.

Nothing formal no. I've looked at some art books but it varies how useful they can be based on the way they're worded. Also some were "how to draw anime" books which I'm sure people can agree aren't actually helpful at all.

I never went to an art college. The college mentioned in my old art progress image wasn't art focused, I did have art class in secondary school though.

The issue with shading is that I'm left handed but do my colouring with a mouse. I do want to at some point get a tablet of some kind and learn how to use one of those. Once that happens I can feel comfortable trying shading. Also art is just a hobby for me, I draw because I enjoy it and while I certainly want to improve I don't want prioritizing it to get in the way of other things I like.

Another year, another post of my art on 4chan

>although that just seems like an edit of an existing sprite from emerald
Well Ruby/Sapphire and Fire Red/Leaf Green to be exact, Emerald wasn't out yet when I made that edit. I did do a bunch of other sprite edits since then, I just didn't include them on this art progress image or post them on DA. I basically kept doing them until Pokémon stopped using sprites outside of the menus.

Don't worry about it. This is an art focused board, people here are going to have a much more critical eye of art. I could easily just ignore this board if I wanted but the first time I came here I did get some helpful tips. I started a sketchbook for drawings that I don't plan on uploading (that I'll admit I don't use as much as I should) and looked over a few of the resources in other threads.

There will be a point when I feel comfortable enough to draw things with the only goal being to improve. But if I did that now it would be the only thing I was drawing at the time and I don't want that. I want to be at a point when I can draw for fun and draw to learn within a close period of time comfortably. So my main focus for art improvement is to always have several drawing planned as motivation to draw frequently. By drawing more often I'll get better at small things. Next year I also plan on saving up for a new laptop with one of the reasons for wanting one being to have a better setup for my art. I want to improve but I don't want improving to take away from the reason I draw in the first place, I like drawing.

There's more improvements than those two details. I'd barely even consider those two as examples of the improvement because since the first drawing there has been official Ben 10 media that featured an older Ben Tennyson that I was able to use as inspiration for the second (I've also drawn the character several times between those two drawings) and both drawings have pupils. If you want an actual example look at the way the older picture is coloured. I would use the Magic Wand tool, select an area I wanted to colour and delete it with the colour as the background colour. I also would rarely clean my outlines before colouring while these days I spend most of my colouring time cleaning, moving and redrawing outlines. Outside of that most improvements are smaller, subtle details. Things that are more noticeable to me than other people.

Yes it's not a huge step up but small improvements are still improvements. I acknowledge I still have a lot of areas I need to work on. Proportions (mostly arms and legs), shading, different angles for faces, hands, feet, scaling, backgrounds, vehicles, details, at some point I'll probably need to transition into drawing outlines digitally, getting better tools, learning more about the tools I already have and more. As I said in the post you replied to art isn't the only thing I've fallen behind on, my focus shifts a lot and while I enjoy art and do want to improve it's not my highest priority.

Well with that particular example the way I colour my art has changed a lot. I have a better understanding of layers than I used to. As for techniques I'm not good with specifics but one example would be that I do a lot more editing than I used to. I move parts around a bit, draw parts I'm uncertain of multiple times to see which works best while editing and try and can salvage parts I like from a drawing I messed up.

>>4264771
I didn't really bring up my autism in my earlier replies partly because it had been brought up already but also because I recognize it's only part of what limits me and honestly out of my limitations it's the one that is easier to work around. Another person with autism without my other obstacles is going to make faster progress than me.

>>4264776
I did art classes in secondary school and that included drawing realism back when I was mainly drawing in a Pokémon/Toriyama inspired art style and only drew four fingers. I did learn things during those classes but one of my obstacles is that I'm not very compatible with the classroom environment even when the subject is something I'm interested in. I learn things but not at the same pace as other people and when everyone in your class is picking everything up faster than you the teacher doesn't wait for you to catch up. And online methods of learning aren't the easiest to follow either, some are helpful but others just fly over my head. I think you don't notice the ways I've improved because the ways I haven't stand out to you more. Which makes sense but to me when I look at that image I see how much I've changed.
