That is a good tip but I work in layers so what I start on is largely irrelevant.

Think it's enough of fucking about today. These are thin layers so they'll dry by tomorrow and hopefully I'll continue blocking in.

I think I *might* have over-rendered the construction.

I really need to draw bigger and stop conserving paper. I'll attempt longer sessions with better construction tomorrow, bigger size of course, covering the whole page.

Learning to take my time as I am used to doing things far too quickly thus messy and out of proportion, but they're just excuses.

You went a little bit crazy with the highlights there.

Use the paper as your mid tone, block in and render the shadows first, then add highlights literally on highlights -- and not even on some, for in darker areas contrast of shadows and mid tones can give the look of highlights so you don't have to use white (for if you do it would be too distracting and out of place).

Good suggestions, thanks anon. Already making my colour chart and labeling it then hanging it up in front of me, but will paint from life soon after a few more colour exercises.

I'm not a complete beginner, just a beginner with oils, so I'm not too concerned about constructions & proportions.

That is a good suggestion but I don't think I need it just yet, I'm alright with shapes, ok with construction and am simply learning oils on top of that at the moment. Mainly the colour mixing aspect now. Shapes & painting soon.
