First part where she turns her head is amazing. Her reaction is also really good, though the second arm settles too quickly (or comes up too high for that timing). The ending is more shaky, her body doesn't sway enough for swinging a sword around, and I feel there should be a bit more anticipation when it's above her head and more cushioning when it comes down. Nah, just some mock animation that would probably work for a game, but no plans to actually make one, desu. ^_^;;;

The show has this stylized look for their profile.. so I tried to emulate its look, but maybe it just came off confusing.

Good news is that the show's art style is pretty malleable, so hopefully I can find a good middle ground that maintains the style's overall feel.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

The rigs look great, but you gotta watch out for jittering. I noticed in the first gif you posted, the animation is technically correct, but there's a lot of areas where the spacing is super messed up. The tilt of the gun suddenly popping into place, the elbow "sticking" for a frame or two, the bracelets on the close arm, the entire torso jitters backwards and forwards on the up of the walk, and the entire head jitters around with the way you skewed and rotated it.
Since you have the animation pretty much mostly down, now you can go back through the all of the rig's symbols and check every layer to see how each individual piece moves independently. Turn on the onion skin and keep an eye on your arcs. Pay close attention to the spacing between multiple frames so that the lines don't accidentally "stick" or jitter around.
You should also play around with the overlapping motion for the hair as well. The up and down motion is synced up with everything else. Try to have the hair trail behind the up and down motion of the body. Keep the actual symbol's placement the same, but use the skewing tool to delay the ends of the hair tufts. It will naturally make arc that plus the animation.
Also copy the entire keyframe stack for the first frame of the walkcycle, and then place it at the end. That will make it wayyyy easier to make sure your walkcycle loops seamlessly.

It's certainly faster to get something down, but to finish it still takes a looong time. You do the entire thing as rough gestures which should be done quickly to keep the energy, but then when that's done you have to draw the frames in-between and refine them and refine them and refine them.

Hey guys, this is my first animation. A little eye that I did in Opentoonz last night, just figured out how to render it out into gif today.

I haver a question about onion skins and layers. Any answer would be really appreciated.

On Onion Skins: It seems that it will only show me about 6 skins back, even when i select all of the frames manually, is there a way to make opentoonz show all skins at all times? (I want to animate a ball bouncing on a ledge, but by the time my ball gets to the ledge, I cant see the ledge anymore because the onion skin for it is gone.)

And on layers. I want to animate over an imported image, I tried a bunch of stuff but cant make it stay in the background, and it seems like I have to re upload it to every frame, which is just brutally time wasting, anyone know how to do this?

Hi! I actually animated on this. Guz and Terkoiz were responsible for the storyboarding and they're absolute beasts and honestly are responsible for how it turned out. My advice though is to always use reference, always. Not rotoscoping, but find references or record your own and go frame by frame to find the key poses of the motion and use your fundamentals to fill in the spacing. The timing doesn't have to be exact, as an animator your job is to communicate, never be afraid to mess with the timing and exaggerate things. Personally speaking, what's the most useful is understanding where kenetic energy goes when performing a motion. For example, when you perform a punch, you have to build up that energy using the wind up and for the swing you exhort that force in an arc until it runs out. Always always always focus on the wind up and the follow through, the impact is actually not that important when it comes to communicating a convincing blow. Hope that helps!

Animation probably needs reference more than any other art form. While you can learn the muscles of the forearm and draw them from memory, you can't really learn how someone sits in a chair because everyone sits in a chair differently. The static shoulder completely destroys any sense of acting you wanted to show with this. Also the equal timing is a bit annoying. Try not to make sure all of the actions in an animation don't follow a "beat" unless there's already a story rhythm established. It also helps make the animation look a lot more unique and dynamic when you time out individual things differently.

The youtuber doesn't go over the 3D required to get good looking scenes. From what I've read, the optimal animation workflow is

1) CSP (genga style)
2) export to Opentoonz for automated colouring depending on the genga style outlines
3) Model backgrounds in program of choice. Cinema4D is in AE and is commonly used in animation and its strength is integration with plugins like Houdini and xparticles. However idk how aftereffects works with c4d. c4d's default renderer sucks balls compared to Octane
4) Composite in AE
I've also heard that After Effects isn't considered a serious program at all and that Nuke is way better, but Nuke is dangerous to install because of the Foundry's insane trigger happy approach to piracy and idk how good it is for anime even.

like i said; it isn't industry wages because it is NOT industry work, but i get like $2k USD every month or so. that covers the cost of living in my area. this isn't LA or Burbank, so I wouldn't expect any animation job paying the same rates that you'd get at an in-house studio

damn what are people telling you? that's just blatantly false lmao
You're given a clear storyboard for visual reference and an animatic to follow for timing reference, and since the artstyle is really simple, most of the time you can jump straight into final linework without roughing it out and it comes out perfectly fine.
doing 2 minutes of stick figures on 2s and 3s doesn't equate to the same effort that you would spend if you worked for hours on every single frame in an illustration-heavy animation job. the workflow is flexible, and the time you spend worrying about drawing can be spent worrying about how to push the animation instead. it does get difficult at times, but it's animation and it is what it is.
ive personally been pretty comfortable working with them because my rent is cheap and i barely cost anything to exist. i also just REALLY fucking love animating

Pencil2d is good for beginners if you just want to open the app and just start animating, the UI is very simple and you'll have it down within an hour of opening it. I haven't tried Opentoonz, but from what I've read on other forums it has a bit of a steeper learn curve, but can yield great results. the thing is that what im doing is not industry work and my actions aren't to be held up as an example of an animator working in the industry. im animating for a youtube channel and that's pretty much it. i just personally don't need to earn that much to exist and im pretty content with what i have right now. i agreed on the rate that they gave me and i can always negotiate a raise if my living condition changes. having a paycheck is better than having nothing to me, especially when you've not had much professional animation experience. i knew that i wasn't gonna be making $5k a month the moment i started seeking out professional gigs, but it's a good thing to work up to.

now if i was living in LA and trying to get by with professional animation work, that would be completely different because of how TV animation is handled behind the scenes. since im just some grugg in the middle of the woods where there's no jobs, making good money doing animation in my bedroom is really fulfilling.

maybe im an optimist or some shit but it's a really good feeling when i get pay rent with a job that fits me like a glove.

Idunno man, I got paid more than 2k a month off commissions alone and I work from the middle of nowhere. Just seems to me like these youtube guys are a couple of scummy people trying to get good work for cheap capitalizing off recent grads.

If pencilmation pays artists around $2,000.00 a month, that's around 2.4 million dollars a year with 100 freelancers. If they pay let's say $5,000.00 a month to full time employees, that's 3 million dollars a year with 50 employees.

Out of the estimated 13 million they make, they're spending less than half on the people who are actually creating content and the remaining 7 million on... what, hiring talent? Sounds sketchy to me.

i mean im currently making more than $2k a month as is, and it's been doing me pretty well. i never had to struggle with a retail job, an art college, or any commission work. im doing what im being paid to do, and i might as well make it sparkle for the reel while im at it. it's a youtube gig, and i wasn't expecting a higher pay. if there's anybody to blame it's probably me lol
>>4993206
>around $2,000.00 a month
>$5,000.00 a month to full time employees
when i was working freelance with them, i was getting paid per-project. so the numbers you're throwing around don't make any sense. the numbers would imply every single freelance animator and artist contributes an entire animated short once a month, which is never the case. an episode usually stays in the production pipeline for months until it's finally wrapped up.
as far as i know, none of the fulltime production staff is making $5k a month either, so that doesn't make any sense. it's a pretty solid gig when you think about other youtube animation jobs out there. i was working for $750 a MONTH at another youtube animation job before i got approached by Pencilmation

also don't get your numbers from Socialblade or any related sites, because they astronomically exaggerate the numbers for no reason. they most likely make WAY less than what you've come up with.

hate to say it but some people tend to have a knack for animation. i think it's kinda similar to how some people can pick up other languages really easily. when you're a teenager, your brain is a lot more elastic. when you learn and practice new things at that age, your brain just holds onto the information a lot better than if you picked it up later in life. start early, and get good early.
>>4994769
usually there's a basic storyboard, a layout, and timing reference. their entire production pipeline is completely different than a regular western animation studio, since they have a whole different "language" during layouts and storyboards. it's generally not wise to let the animator decide things like that unless they already have a strong reputation in the industry. the boards are probably as basic as boards can get, since most of the anime industry is about saving time and cutting corners. it's entirely up to the animator to draw on model and plus the boards.

Nakamura will remain the best and one of my huge inspirations, I love him to pieces but fuck the imitators. They barely add something new or try their own take on the style, instead it's just reashed garbage thats worse than the main article.

The only word of praise is that he's capable of animating of that calibur at that age.

Hey guys I hope you can help me find a certain guide that explained a framing concept. It's a storyboard with blue and pink figures showing how to not to go from action A to action B in each shot, but that something should go between them to provide context. Like a shot of a character raising their fist shouldn't directly go into a shot of the fist already thrown and hitting someone, the guide would tell you to pan to the second shot with the victim not punched yet, then animate the fist being thrown. It was about how to link shots together to make movements more readable and flow better. It's not 'in-betweens', tweening or smear frames, I think it might be called 'lead-ins'? If someone can tell me what the concept is really called that would be great, search engines are so shit these days.

Relatively new to art and only animating I did was with Flash as a kid.
Blender looks like it might be the way to go, however I'm not so sure how beginner friendly it is or how many learning resources there are out there for the 2D side of things.
I intend to improve my art skills and the most fun "learn by doing" method seems to be animating as a burst of inspiration can last over a project with hundreds of frames instead of a single image.

lol @ Toon Boom being in last place in their own poll

As much as I love CSP for drawing, it's really not the best for animating. It's great for short scenes but I'd never make an entire cartoon in it; using layers for frames is always an annoying way to work. Flash/Animate still has the best interface by far, if only the drawing tools weren't garbage.

Camera and perspective of distance is odd. Figure in the back of the cowman looks way to far behind tp het hit by that tiny axe. Also if you're gonna pull of that zoom in the arrow guy needs to become a lot larger as he exits the frame, instead he looks like he deified the laws of friction, and if thats the case the bullman and the guy should be shrunk to seem further away then amplified to what you have now as you zoom in.
