why do i keep trying to draw humans when it is so clearly way, way outside my level of ability?

i mean, it results in some hilarious shit but probably all it's accomplishing is keeping my streak going and reinforcing bad habits that i have a chance to not learn while i'm still /beg/

Why do I keep tackling on more than I can chew? I keep thinking of art as some kind of mmorpg where I go from quest giver to quest giver, finish something but the other quest turns grey with less exp but very important that I do that quest or I can continue the story in that quest line that will get progressively difficult.

don't compare it to the quest system, compare it to the job system.
you can attempt making stuff on a higher difficulty level, but there is a high possibility that it will fail. while fundies are the basic recepies that you will come back to to make those higher difficulty items.

I feel there is a certain degree of fundies I need to know before repeatedly coming back when my work is lacking. Say if I have no knowledge how perspective works and I want a specific shot to work from a vision I have, I can’t pull it off because I have no training in that thing. I would be wasting time trying to make a failed picture and the only thing I would learn from it is what’s already staring me in the face—fundamentals. However I do think there is a point to making difficult, finished work then patching it up with weaker skills that weren’t practiced for some time.

People with good intuition, like hoppy, can have fun making pictures because they have a certain level of base to jump from and when they’re lacking they probably do studies. They also are sort of in a box of repetitiveness. It would be better to have a base to leverage from like him but to not stop and push the work further. Eh, I’ll stop here don’t want to type too much.

I like all the poses except the bottom one. I feel like the guys torso is squished (try to make it a bit longer/definied?) and his right legs pose is not very clear (looks unstable), maybe you can try and see if you can pose him a bit better? Sorry not much for a help with redlining or anything. They all look cool and I am interested to see how they will look once done. Love the pose on the top guy especially.

I'm not hating on the guy, it's just that there are literally two reasons why something looks off, you're either drawing something that's not supposed to be there or not drawing something that is supposed to be there (be it shape, value, color, edges)

art is not about intuition, at least not if you want to make it a profession, you have to be able to recognize why something looks off and how to fix it

No. Even without aphantasia it sucks. I can get perfect perspective with perfect lighting and form in lucid dreams from any angle. Ask me to draw without references and I can't even render a head facing forward. I can imagine shid, there's just a humugous disconnect between getting the perfect pose and lighting and form in perspective on the canvas the more realistic the shading is. I have to learn 3D in order to level up further unless I stick to flat cell shading forever

I don't want to put that much effort into someone else's waifu but I tried redrawing the pose more thoroughly this time for learning purposes. Genuinely want to know what glaring mistakes there are. Also, maybe muscle memory isn't the right term because i do still try to deconstruct in my head and use muscle memory more for shape design. Still, i know i progress at a pretty slow pace and that there are better ways to practice. I'm just too stubborn

That guy is the textbook difference between constructive criticism and whining.

Now thats out of the way, the following are mostly suggestions / areas that you may want to consider (depending upon style preference)

1. Her arms
I think this one is the most objective concern with the piece. They are very short. It would be hard to visualize her being able to reach the bottom of her pelvis with the arms she currently has. The apparent size could normally be considered a result of perspective, however the head acts as a frame of reference in comparison with the arms.

2. Her Elbows
I’d argue her elbow (the one pressing against his chest) suffers because it’s not physically possible. She is for the most part laid flat against his body, however her elbow is essentially jutting into the space his chest would be. To visualize the problem, imagine lying on your side on your bed. It’s impossible for you to raise your arm outward while still having the side of your torso flat against the bed. What is possible is to have the arm outstretched forwards

3. Head Size
This goes back to number 1. The viewer will instinctively see the heads and then use that as a reference for how large / small surrounding objects are. I’d say keeping an eye on head sizes would be beneficial to prevent characters from looking stubby. (ie her arms and his shoulders)

Again, this is all dependent upon what style you are aiming for and I definitely could be wrong / off on my own proportions

Oh damn, thanks for this. I was trying to go for foreshortening on the arms but was having trouble. I wanted to keep a big size difference so i dont think her arm would be able to reach behind him and still do double piisu sign like the redraw but the edit's a good solution. And yeah, looking at it now the head's too big even for my style.

I think it’s less about construction and more about drawing what you see, not what you think is there. Keep drawing refs like this and really look at things as shapes and how far apart they are from each other and how things line up and you’ll improve.

Trace over the image if you can't figure out what you did wrong. Then draw it by eye with no tracing and do better. Protip, flip the canvas horizontally, vertically and rotate it every five minutes if you suck at figuring out what you did wrong. If you still have trouble turn the reference into grayscale. If you still can't do it, cut the reference image into a grid and try and draw each square

This is really cute!
I think the blue of the darkness is a bit much - maybe make it a bit less blue - and the legs on the final panel are a bit wobbly and don't look quite right to my eyes - but I love the first panel, I think her little meditation pose looks real good and her face and hands in the 2nd panel look fantastic. Some other things - I think the watch could look a little more magical and glowy. Also, I'd say the text looks a little amateurish and that makes the whole piece look a little less professional - you might want to look into some tutorial on typesetting comics if you plan on doing more stuff like this, I think it'd be valuable.
