A problem I consistently see in these threads are that people aren't bold enough with colours. One of the key things about pixelart is colour theory and being able to tie in different colours to create an appealing effect. A lot of you choose very similar colours that create soft transitions in larger masses, while you should only be keeping those for AA and softening out edges in moderation. Try area-specific dithering with a different hue to build up your shadows instead.

Not that anon, but it's uninteresting. Work smaller, be stricter with your colour transitions and don't abuse dithering. Think of big shadow masses and think of your materials. Like the AA you did on the highlights, it encompases the entire highlight making it feel faded and pillowy, unlike the reflection you would see on a glass object. The way you did the shadow also makes me feel like instead of spheres I'm looking at plates with a weird shadow on the bottom. Don't be afraid to use references for materials, anon, even for pixel art.

dark outline looks better than just slightly darker versions of the same colors for lines, but there are a wide variety of different approaches to using lines. Lines can accent a silhouette, help differentiate forms in 3D space, show shadows/shading, show highlights/lighting, communicate the color palette, or create atmosphere or effects.

i grew up playing GBA games, and started making pixel art one afternoon about 2.5 years ago. I went to video game art school, but hadn't really done pixel art before.
I kept at it, just doing it for fun. I looked at a lot of pixel art to inspire me, but rarely tried to emulate it, just kept making stuff that I thought was cool.

As far as shading goes, it's up to you. I don't typically do much shading at all, just a form/cast shadow. But a lot of people do a lot of rendering with many colors, and treat pixel art more like a painting.

How do you get into it? Like anything else, you just start doing it because you enjoy it. Don't dive in head first like a moron because it's popular or because you think there's money in it. It takes tremendous patience.

Anyway, a lot of general questions about pixel art can usually be answered with general art fundamentals. If you're a good artist, you won't struggle with pixel art.

Two good pointers for starting out: Limit yourself to only a few colors, and work at a small resolution. pixel art is all about emphasizing the amount that a single pixel can communicate.

Looks pretty good. The main issues I see are minor technical things. There is some banding in a few areas. When pixels line up in certain ways, it creates a blocky look. I've circled these areas in red on your art. The color variation, or antialiasing (AA), you've tried to show in your lines doesn't make much sense. Try adding AA pixels outside the main part of the lines instead of coloring inside them. I've included an example in the upper corner. Also, pay attention to "jaggies" in your lines where the smooth flow is interrupted by out of place pixels. I've circled some of these in green. Smooth them out by editing the lines or adding AA.

Just using an aliased brush doesn't make it pixel art. If all you've done is sketch lines and fill in color, it's oekaki. Pixel art requires fine control down to the pixel. Read the guide linked in >>4501558 and learn more about the basics of pixel art. If you want to refine your piece into pixel art, start by cleaning up the lines. Make them into smooth curves without any "jaggies". Avoid using the automatic dither brush and place your dithering only where necessary, at the shadow terminators. You should probably be working at a smaller resolution when you are a beginner.

work at a lower resolution, the point of pixel art is to explore creative uses of single pixels/pixel clusters. Also the dither effect you've attempted basically disappears at this scale. A tail comes out of the tail bone, above the cheeks, not right out of someone's ass. Your lines/curves are also really sloppy. You just stopped drawing her legs at the tips of her thighs. No matter what her lower legs are doing, more of them would be visible.

But yea, the most important thing you should take away is that literally all of the detail in your drawing could be represented at 1/8th of its current scale.

I would say KOF13 sprites are pixel art but attack effects and fire is not.
For backgrounds I would say they are a mix of pixel art with not pixel art where pixel art is used mostly on the animated parts.
I think it's fair to consider other sprites like charaters as a mix too if you want, but for me I think they are pixel arty enough to be considered pixel art.

that's not what a thin woman's torso/waist looks like, it's not just a concave LITERAL hourglass. Even if you want her that thin, the shapes of the pelvic bones/rib cage have to be accounted for.

yea, I'd been making little halo pixel characters here and there so i put together a few images for when H2 launched.

a pretty long time, probably 8 or 9 evenings ~40 hours, but i move really slowly.
1 was a sketch from my sketchbook. I liked the idea so i decided i wanted to take it further so i started by just making 2, a bunch of props that i thought would be cool to put in a house, although some of them didn't make the cut. Then 3 I made a sketch in photoshop to figure out the layout of the house. it's a hobby and a job. I've been doing game art my whole adult life, and started doing pixel art for fun like 3 years ago. Then i started sharing it and found a lot of amazing artists, and ppl started reaching out to me for paid pixel art gigs. I've been super fortunate!

I use photoshop for everything. I know there are great pixel art programs, but i don't know if i could switch because of the tools in PS. selection tools, warping, levels/adjustments, blend modes, etc. I tend to keep like 500 sprites in a single file too so i can cross reference easily, and photoshop is great for that. photoshop has primitive animation capabilities too, but it's not ideal for trying to make tilesets.

a few different art types. I grew up doing sketchbook drawings, then went to school for game art and learned the whole 3D character/environment pipeline. Then I did concept art/production art for a mobile games company for about 4.5 years, before i left because it was utterly soul crushing working with people who only care about money.

I've alway been heading towards game development but i've considered comic art and animation in the past. After i left the mobile games studio i made a 60 page comic and realized that making comics is a very different challenge from game art or illustration. I dabbled in animation before and after college.
I defined myself a few different ways. As a teenager i was "an artist". In college i was a game artist, then a 2d artist, then specifically a concept artist. Then i realized i had chosen such a specific role that it was keeping me from learning things. "i don't program." "I don't do 3D." "I don't animate." etc etc. Eventually i realized that I just wanted to make games, so i started learning to program. Games are my life; I'm enjoying what i do, and i'm improving.

Sounds like you have some of the same concerns, i know it can be hard to choose a path because you can't do it without closing off other opportunities, and you don't want to make the wrong choice and not know until years later. If you learn one thing, you'll get good but you'll have few skills. If you learn a wide variety of things, you gain a lot of skills but can't compete at any of them.

I would say that you may not be able to decide the path right now, it can take a long time before you understand which things about you won't change over the years.

If all else fails, never underestimate the power of stepping away from your career goals (for a while) entirely to find yourself. If you lack self awareness, you will limit yourself.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes I guess it's a long journey and only few people know what they want right from the start. I still have a good chunk of the school left, but would like to start having some kind of commissions and can't decide what to focus on(I learn tattooing already but don't want it to be my main job). At least I'm taught good fundamentals, but I need to be thinking about some specialization so I'm not dazed after I end the school. I'd say I cyclically go back to different kinds of art and wouldn't be able to do just one thing for long periods of time.

Could you elaborate on what does finding yourself mean to you? And how lack of self awareness can limit you? If anything, I feel too self aware and know if I don't focus on honing a marketable skill I won't get a job, and I experience the mentioned fear of being trapped in my own choice.

years after school, when i didn't have a job and just sat around doing my own personal work and looking through old artwork, i realized that i had enormous potential that i never capitalized on because i doubted myself and didn't see any project as "the one."

Knowing yourself helps you see through your own denial. The little lies we tell ourselves add up in a big way over time and keep us from achieving our goals.

I had an idea of who I wanted to be and always looked to the future, and eventually the future hit me, and instead of thinking about what i would be, i had to accept what i actually was, which sucked.

Anyway this is getting philosophical, just try to focus on what you enjoy and work hard. Don't worry if you don't get an art job right away because having 'normal' jobs can help you grow as a person, which is just as important as developing as an artist.

well, it could use a background. Also it looks slimy but doesn't have any pinprick highlights that communicate that it's shiny. You've treated the entire thing like it's all made of the same material in terms of lighting.

More importantly though, how much are you going to refine the pixels? because honestly, given how loose it is, you'd do yourself a favor by scaling it down to like 50% and then polishing all the texturing. Otherwise, if you intend to make something that looks finished, you have a very long process ahead of you.

it's very cute. angle of the building doesn't match everything else though, especially the vehicles. I would also recommend defining your shapes a little more clearly in your foliage. Trees and plants often have a degree of randomness to them in real life, but it can translate to messiness in pixel art, especially at this scale. Repeating shapes can help things to have texture/interest without distracting the eye. Your trees have some lighting but it lacks direction and isn't helping to define the form.

i wish i could sprite as good as you lol. i actually can't draw at all, but I really wanted to make an actual gameboy game. the problem is that there are a bunch of hardware limitations. so that main character sprite that you drew actually wouldn't work, the program doesn't use that darker green on player sprites. i'll definitely keep the foliage tips in mind though. thanks :)

to be honest she is just a side character in my dream game, I have around 14 characters and I just choose here because I thought a Yakuza girl beating up some oposing gang members was cool.
I also love spats, blonde hair, and socks, so there is some of my coomer likes leaking from my brain to her design.
She was never meant to be an MC but thinking about it she should play a bigger role in my second game just to trigger the shit out of you when you see my game couple of years from now.

not bad. your front/back views of the guy shooting don't really read at all. gotta zhuzh it up a little. fake the angle so it reads, even if it's less 'accurate'. i know you want him to have that cool stance but you're going to have to have a more pronounced silhouette. the green snapper thing is fun. is it like a whale? i like the other little pixel characters, especially Dr. Squint, but the colors need work, you're putting tans and yellow/peaches next to each other and that doesn't read well.
