How do you improve being "imaginative"?

I've been struggling thinking about this for a while now, and I don't know how to fix it. Everything everyone else does is leagues better than anything I could dream of when it comes to doing things that are original and interesting. Even wanting to make a comic, all my settings and ideas feel like they are all just regurgitation of things I've already seen in the worst cheapest way possible.

No one can really teach you how to be "imaginative". The only answer to this is to look everywhere for inspiration - the old masters, your favorite artists, religion, history, mythology, folklore, books, nature, etc. The most imaginative and ambitious artworks in history were inspired by any combination of these things.

But being imaginative isn't really the hard part about art anyway, and it's a common /beg/ trap to be overly concerned with being creative and original because they don't quite understand how much more it takes to create art. You could have the most creative mind there is but without an understanding and skill to put your ideas onto paper and bring it to completion then being "imaginative" is meaningless.

Most great artists start putting down their imaginative ideas for pieces as simple rough thumbnail sketches. That in itself is relatively easy - building it up from thumbnail sketch to a fully rendered painting is what is far more difficult and time consuming. Ask yourself: what kind of skills did it take for the painter behind pic related to develop it from rough sketch to what you see right now? What skills and fundamentals you need for the kind of art that you want to create is really what you need to ask yourself, because once you've become very good at those then you can spend more time concerning yourself with what to create, rather than how.

What sites are good for posting a pornographic webcomic? My minicomic (10 pages) is nearly complete and I'm looking for places other than twitter and fA to post it. Smack Jeeves, Tapas, and Webtoon all forbid pornographic materials for the sake of sexual gratification.

I'm not a large creator and feel that making my own website would not be the best course of action as I do not have a large enough audience to cover any website administration costs. It was also a commissioned work so putting it behind a patreon paywall seems unfair to the commissioner.

I really would like to expand my audience and funnel attention from other social art/comic sites to my main sites.

So go really minimalist. Any kind of attempt at using value to define the shape will make the face look less asian.

There's always the option of creating your own website.
If you don't want to go that route you might want to look into newgrounds (I think they mentioned nsfw was allowed) and maybe pornhub. Pornhub seems odd, but during the tumblr apocolypse there were talks of allowing users to enter a partnership and post porn comics there. It might be worth an email of interest, if nothing else.

If it doesn't matter you can go find websites or the equivalent of subforums and look for selfies. Not the greatest, but it's something.

Depends on which region/country you were looking for. Technically yes, many survive but they tend to be of little interest to anyone outside of the family inheritance or the odd historian every now and again. Otherwise you have a lot of cases like in Europe where paintings were used as fuel or material during wartime and depressions so their chances of survival are slimmer compared to the more intere$$ting paintings which would have been either locked in vaults or sent overseas.
Tapestries follow a similar fate, unfortunately. Items of usefulness like clothes, blankets, pottery, and ceramic (plates, cups, etc.) are going to be more likely to be maintained, thus more likely to survive but they tend to be more historical patterns rather than what you might find in paintings like landscapes.

Like 6 months or whenever you feel comfortable with basics and bored to death with a pencil. There’s nothing set in stone other than the massive attrition rate in the first year. 80 percent of people stop and sinking money in doesn’t change it so you may as well see how far you get and if you like it before dropping 80 bucks on a tablet. The only counter I have to this is that you make massive improvements when you start thinking about painting but that’s only when you already know how to draw and have some proficiency with digital workflow.

Because you probably aren't doing it right. Not trying to be insulting, but the vast majority of people who discuss it here have no clue what it's for, and how to use it.

Simple answer: Get a colorimeter. The Colormunki Smile is the best entry level device, and is all you need. Your greys are off because you're not adjusting the contrast/whitepoint on your screen correctly, a Munki will.

All you need to get done is to set the gamma correctly, and remove any color casts, if any. You can try and do it manually, by going here:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

or here:

http://www.photoscientia.co.uk/Gamma.htm

Also, understand that if you're going to try and adjust your display, you have to readjust every time the ambient light in the room changes, or the adjustments will be pointless. If you adjust your monitor in the morning, in a room with sunlight, by the afternoon, it will all be thrown off. Same for night/day.

Seriously, save up $100 and get a Colormunki, or the entry level X-rite. Or, just get your gamma/greyscale ramp adjusted, and don't worry about it.

Imagination is a skill/activity that needs practice and experience, just like anything else, and some people are just more inherently better at it.
My degree in illustration focused on this in the last two years of core classes. You have to learn how to think, how to explore, how to spot cliches and toss them out.
Here's how to start. Take your favorite book, or album. Design an image for the cover. Do 10-12 thumbnail ideas. Try to make each one unique. They don't have to be detailed, just the overall idea. Don't worry what others have done, or what the actual cover is. Let your mind explore ideas. 10-12 ideas is a lot of work for newbies, I struggled like everyone else in class did, at first.

Then, pick the best 2. Work those up as rough drafts. Don't worry about accuracy, or details, or reference/poses. Just get the ideas more fleshed out.

Whichever one feels the strongest, pick that, and do a finished piece. Again, don't worry if it looks like something that's already been done. Just finish your idea, get used to finishing ideas. It's a good habit to get into.

Our first project in the first class was to do that, with the phone book.

Our second assignment was to pick a phrase, like "Don't cry over spilt milk", and illustrate it. Again, 10-12 thumbnails, pick two, work them up, pick a final, finished piece. REALLY interesting what people came up with on this one.

This is the kind of exercise they'd have us do, to start thinking. That's part of creativity. If an image doesn't form in your head, take the steps to create the environment where it will. Just staring at the paper won't make it happen.

Oh - and we'd generally get these done over a week, weekend included for the finals.

In regards to the matter between making a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with the Saturation setting all the way down, and a Black fill layer with the blend mode set to Color, why do some people say the latter is better than the former?

I understand that the Color blend mode only adjusts the base layer based on the blend layer's hue and saturation, which means making a black color fill layer be set to "Color" would essentially just be removing the hue and saturation from an image while keeping the values intact.

I also know that the Color blend mode considers color chroma as a part of the base layer's value instead of the pixel brightness, so inherent values that colors possess are calculated whereas it isn't when you make a hue/saturation layer.

I just want to know what exactly makes 1 method of checking your values better than the other. Plenty of artists say "making the black layer and setting it to color is better" but they don't offer any explanation as to why.

I'm also perfectly aware of the third method for checking your values, where you set the color profile to that one thing, but I'm not asking about that.

They shot transparencies, or slides. A transparency is like a slide, but bigger - the two most popular sizes were 4x5" and 8x10". These, or 35mm slides, would be drum scanned, on high end scanners that used lasers to read the film spinning in a rotating glass drum. Before that technology existed, they'd do manual separations, where they'd make 4 color printing plates photographically.

A more technical article:

http://printwiki.org/Color_Separation

Transparencies were typically shot on what are called copy stands - a very stable physical platform with camera with a 4x5" or 8x10" back - that's the actual film size. They used very specific lighting systems for even lighting across the whole image. The entire process was an art form in itself. One of my first real career jobs was working with transparencies and scanning and editing them. There are still places left who can shoot them, and there are still labs and service bureaus who have drum scanners. (they were very expensive to buy, and you had to have a service contract because they broke down often)(And they could be pretty large - they're not desktop scanners.

The moment you decide that where your art is now isn't where you want it to be in the future.

Learning the basics of anatomy (and gesture drawings) gives you the building blocks that you can apply to all types of art, or start on the road in learning how things are built with shapes and how they move so that you can create more visually appealing figures in the future. Learning anatomy is just a good idea, regardless of where you want to go with your art.

I'm BRAND NEW to painting (trad) and right now I'm interested in how I can get smooth, controlled gradients. The way I do that with pencil is to just block in the major values and very lightly draw over any hard edge until it has the desired smoothness - no smudging with paper, I prefer the control of building things up by putting exactly the value I want where I want it. What's the equivalent of working this way in painting? Specifically with gouache. The way I envision it is, spending a lot of time mixing colors on the palette and then slowly building up the desired result on the canvas with small exploratory strokes, but I've also gotten the impression that gouache might not be as suited for this method of working as maybe oils would? I've heard people say that gouache can get very finnicky if you overwork an area of the painting due to the risk of reactivating previous layers.

I picked gouache to start with because I like the style of work people tend to do with it (think old Ghibli backgrounds, or Hajime Sorayama's work, although i think some of his work is acrylic and some is gouache) but I'm willing to experiment with a few different media to see what I take to best.

Like I said I'm brand new and I've only been experimenting with the paints for a few hours so sorry if any of this sounds stupid.

>> No.3968621

>>3968548
It’s not as easy as watercolor, but you have to learn how to control a wash. You want it to still be wet or reactivate to get smooth gradients. You also have to learn how to do transparent glazes.

I think the hard part about gouache is that people try to treat it like acrylic or dry brush instead of the lazy man’s watercolor. If you have good shit that is active wet, it will mix itself whether you want it to or not when wet, cover the layer below with ease, and is still transparent enough to glaze and layer.

You have to treat it like water media, because it is.

>> No.3968661

>>3968621
Ok, so I should (or, can) work with lots of thin transparent layers? I think that's fine too. I think someone said that gouache isn't as good for layering and glazing as watercolors because the dried layers will crack if they get too thick, but maybe if your layers are thin enough there's no risk of that?

I dont allow myself to use social media or listen to anything during this 10 hour period, yet I still feel like id rather stand in the middle of an empty room and do nothing rather than work. How do I overcome this hurdle and is brute force the only way?

>> No.3969203

The short answer is: practice. Blending is a technique, that you just have to put the hours in on.
The smoothest blends with goauche were from airbrushing it - that was the technique the high-end illustrators in the 80's and 90's would use, especially for things like skies and clouds.
Another thing to consider is blending brushes, and things like fan brushes. For small areas, I preferred filbert brushes. But it's just all about getting confident with brushes, period, and mastering the medium. It took me a while to get comfortable with goauche, I had to work in it in college as part of my illustration degree (I'm old), and I hated it at first, but over time, I learned to mimic everything from oils to watercolor with it. Now, I love it, have for years.

Another thing to consider is doing large washes and gradients with watercolor technique, and then painting on top of that. Goauche is basically watercolor, just more concentrated - you're supposed to work opaquely with it, and because most varnishes and mediums are water-repellant, there's no good way (I've found) to seal off underpainting. For small areas, I cross hatch for gradients, for large areas, like skies, I just work transparently. I found for layering, you get one shot, on a fully dried underpainting, but that's all. Goauche is a different headspace, as you're learning, and you're running into the same problems most students run into.
If you want transparent effects, you should lean more towards doing watercolor, or oils. Goauche, or any medium will take many hours to get a hang of, so just learn as many as you can, so you can pick and choose mediums that are more appropriate for a project. Like, I wouldn't choose goauche for portraits, that's oils. But plein air? Goauche is fantastic.

This is called "burnout". Reduce the number of hours you're forcing. You can't force the process.
And, listen to music. You're creating an environment that's antithetical to being creative, and you're forcing it too hard, and over thinking it. Work as long as you feel productive, and stop and go do other life things when you're not. You only drew 4 hours today? So what? Join the club. The only time I've forced myself is on deadline, and even then, I've built up work habits over years to create a comfortable environment and work habits to pull long hours.
The worst way to study anything is when you don't want to be there. You're making the process hard and difficult and uncomfortable, so it's a surprise to you, that you don't want to do it?

For example, when drawing ellipses in perspective I can either draw a fast ellipse around a minor axis that looks clean but is usually off by some degree, or I can go slowly and end up with the correct angle/degree but has small bumps in the edges. One offers a visually cleaner result, but the other seems to encourage thoughtfulness...

I tried checking the /tg/ archives for "creativity|creative" and fuck me was that a bad idea. There's one guy who's declared war on creativity (on the board for make-belief) and through persistance seems to have actually gotten people on his side.

Ask /hyw/ at >>>/co/108167560, be sure to point out you've already watched the video in the header ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb5oIIPO62g )

/tg/ usually recommends (for worldbuilding) taking one specific fact about your story/setting and thinking through the logical consequences of that fact. After all those facts are settled think of another. I feel like there's a second method but I forgot what it was. It'll be in one of the top two links, but the second one is shitposted to shit. Functional but with a lot of dross.

Have >opinions. Head canon and shit, thinking about the things you read
I like reading garbage online and thinking about how I'd redo scenes or conversations

Also if you're reading this 9 days and 23 hours later respond and ramble about your specific problem. It could be that you just don't think like that or it could be stress in your life or something. I'm talking about how to tell a story on the art board so what I'm talking about offhand almost certainly isn't on the money.

Also also good artists borrow and great atists steal- unless it's One Punch Man execution is much more important than the idea and there's only so many to go around. Reinterpreting shit you like is normal.

if so
select the outside of it

There’s a way to do it, but I’m not 100% on it as I just direct paint most of the time. You paint in fills on individual layers and alpha lock them or something and create a new layer.. Then when you go to paint it stays inside the general area. It takes less time to lay flats than you’d think and then you can work under the line art.

Is there a vector pen tool in CSP that works similar to Photoshop's Pen or basically all of illustrator? I don't need the fill, just the manually placed vector lines.

>> No.3976875

>>3976821
Anything drawn on a vector layer with any tool will become a vector line, just create a new vector layer. If you want a more manual way of adding lines you can use the line tools, but I believe you would still need to create them on a vector layer to be able to adjust them after drawing.

>> No.3976895

>>3976875
My issue is that drawing manually on the vector layer gives too many points that are awkward to adjust. I was hoping to place manual points and use handles to adjust curves as I go, much like PS/Illustrator. I think SAI has a tool like that too, just with less finesse.
Line tool might be able to work though, thanks.

>> No.3976973

>>3976895
If you want to give something else a shot too, you can draw with a a regular tool manually and then "simplify" the line using the vector tool brush. It's a bit backward, but as long as you don't do it too much you should be able to minimize your points easily.

Bassackwards but I'll try that in the future, thanks! I got the thing done with the object tool and removing points manually which was equally bassackwards and very slow.

Any recommendation on sculpting tutorials? I have some poly clay and some wire for a skeleton, but I'm still trying to find someone that can teach real technique.

>> No.3979853

>>3979654
Sculpture isn't really something that has much interest, and isn't really something you can teach via book. It's all about hands on work, and learning to think in 3 dimensions. I took a lot of sculpture in college, and it was all studio work, with the teacher walking around helping us every step of the way.

Like anything else, start simple. Don't rush straight to overly complicated, realistic full body poses, start with simple shapes. You have poly clay, start with block shapes, and build up to more complex shapes. Start with body parts, then a full figure. Our first assignment in figure sculpture was cubes, spheres, and cylinders. We got to a full head portrait next. We went to full figure after that, and learned to measure with calipers.
The only advice I can give is do a lot, and move your piece around a lot, and look at every angle, all the time.
I wish I had links. I love sculpture, and have been doing it casually since - i always have poly clay or sculpting wax around, and build models for complex shapes for paintings, or just make stuff.
Plus, learn how to make your own tools. I've never bought a sculpting tool, we were taught how in class to make our own - round bar and a torch for wax tools, wood for clay. Old paintbrush handles are great for making shaping tools.

Eat a banana or some spinach. Or take up drinking, at least your hands will only shake in the morning.

Take time to learn digital workflow and really understand opacity based rendering using layers and layer effects. My biggest stumbling block just diving in from traditional has been not knowing the system and not treating it like a unique medium. Also, learn photomanipulation. A lot of the power of Photoshop is locked behind tools and techniques that make more sense when you're editing photos and making vaporwave collages.. Even if you aren't going to use PS 90 percent of the time, it pays dividends to be able to do what any retard with 10 minutes on youtube can.

get a following on instagram (around 2-3000 is a good amount to start off with) and advertise that you do comissions, you'll most likely get some work if your stuff is decent. for growing your audience try + post every 2 days at least, and look into everliker

>> No.3986371

>>3986245
thanks, everliker is also really interesting. it's been hard to gain followers, only around 330 atm, but maybe that comes with consistent posting or just getting better. when i promote, even for like 3 bucks, i get anywhere from 600 to 1000 likes per post.

dunno, IG is weird. still have never gotten any commission requests, but i'll advertise in my profile bio that I do commissions now for sure.

Do you make some sort of post that tells people you do commissions or just put it in your bio?

How do I make a smoother transition to digital painting?
I have decent skills with traditional media, but I've tried digital a few times and I shit the bed pretty often.

How do I go about making a good collage/ reference sheet for characters? Not by drawing I mean, but by gathering screenshots to draw the characters from. Pic related is an example of what I mean but it's too messy. Any tips/ideas?

>> No.3986495

>>3986432
I would focus on getting more quality and meaningful shots of the characters.

Ideally, you need a full view of the entire character in full detail, front, side and back.
A close-up of their head, from the front, side, rear and profile view.
A handful of their expressions, I see this a lot in concept art or character sheets for anime.
They'll show what expressions the character makes and which ones they don't.
Then you'll want some dynamic images to get a sense of how that character moves and what gestures they use.
Also shots interacting with other characters.

Looks like you have most of that in your pic.

Thank you so much! The video that said characters come from is pretty short and sparse so knowing a proper 'method' of gathering images helps. Again, thanks alot.

How do you tell if a drawing is traced?
I can instantly tell if its traced (if the artist is bad) but can't really put it into Words.

I wanna start drawing porn, but I'm embarrassed about what one of my mutuals will think. We haven't talked in years though, so I have a question: if I block him on twitter and instagram, will that make his account unfollow me, without him getting a message or email that i blocked him? I just wanna do this stealthily.

if the anatomy, or some other fundemental is clearly above the person's level. fundemental mastery takes years, so everything in general will improve along with it. If a complete noob is shit at everything but can somehow draw great dynamic poses, they're tracing it.

Should I stick with portraits? They are priced cheaper but that's pretty much my cap.

I'm confused by people who have a certain number of patrons, and the number hardly ever changes. Like there's one artist who has had more or less 150 patrons for a whole year. It can't all be th same people right? Some must go and new ones support, so how do they stagnant on that number?
