It seems we'll soon have a new Sticky. To keep up with the times, I made some changes to the usual presentation and would like your earnest opinion. Please suggest what could be improved, and next OP will be better. If people were to agree this change is shit, next OP will ofc be back to the way you're used to. All links below beginning with >/# are for https://mega.nz, I needed to save characters.

> Please be patient, board is slow, we may answer you a week later.
> Please search in the thread and various links below before asking for something, it may well already be there.
> Be specific, post the cover if you have it, book's title, artist's name.
> All MEGA links SHOULD be cloned, they die every time they're posted here.
> If any of the links expires or breaks, please inform of it.
> Can't find something? check vk, rutracker, ehentai, cgpeers, etc

Thanks to Famous Artist Anon (>>3170579), the 11 volumes of the Famous Artists Advanced Program (not the Famous Artists Course) are available. Each of the instructors wrote their own book that details how they approach composition, color, and other subjects. Don't ask for book 12 (Albert Dorne), as it doesn't exist. One of the assignments is missing, as are two/three of the cover pages.

never heard about the hornun colour book. how does it stack up against gurney ?

>> No.3181947

>>3181932
Gurney's book is about painting, Hornun's is more abstract color theory, though it does have some notes for the traditional painter. But he talks about hue, saturation, value, luminosity, subtraction versus additive theories, etc. It's also a lot briefer.

To any absolute beginners I'd wholeheartedly suggest skipping Keys to Drawing. The book is only worth your time because of the assignments he gives out, but I didn't walk away with vast knowledge of the fundamentals. As for teaching to draw by eye, it is okay.

Fun with a pencil is exactly that: doodling and not really learning much in between. A lot of repetition with slight variations, but not of any concepts necessary for construction.

I'd replace KTD with Right Side of the Brain and FWAP with any other Loomis book.

Not the OP but there is something to be said for having a good grasp of positive and negative spaces in composition and trying to use them to your advantage.

Framed Ink, Composition by Arthur Wesley Dow, and a host of other books in addition to Hamm's cannot avoid discussing the topic because while the book isn't essential, the subject matter is.

You're right that the very technical books like H2D and H2R are off putting, but that's why pme is included, as a primer. Gurney's book is so often recommended I'm considering adding it, thanks for pointing it out. Also I don't mean essential to mean "required", just excellent books in their class you can't go wrong with learning from.

>>3182199
I'd like to avoid Right Side because every time it's mentioned it kicks up a lot of shit. This chart is for and by /ic/ and so it has to be made with regards to /ic/'s culture. I like it too, really, but I still think Keys is the better book to recommend. It's more beginner friendly because it's mostly not even about accuracy, it's about observation and seeing things as an artist.

I'd like to keep Fun With a Pencil for the same reason, it is very beginner friendly and even if it doesn't teach strict fundamentals it encourages the habit of drawing which is the most important part of gitting gud. His other books all have material covered by other books on the list. I could add "Succesful Drawing" but that basically /is/ pme, which Loomis also recommends in fdfaiw. But only fwap can fill its own niche.

Thank you both for your feedback!

What is a good alternative book for Anatomy for Sculptors Understanding the Human Form? I don't wanna use it online because I don't wanna be fucked if my internet goes out which happens fairly often, and I learn better out of actual books anyways. But this book is $80 and it's not at any of my local libraries. My only option would be the community college book store but my friend worked there for 2 years and said that even if they did have it, they jack the prices up by about 200% on average.

tldr best anatomy book on a budget? I have like $15 to spend immediately but my budget can go as high as $40 or $50 soon. $80 is just too steep right now.

If you want a similar experience to anatomy for the sculptor, try Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing Design and Invention. It has a similar approach to anatomy for the sculptor but more simplified.

I'm not a fan of Sara Simblet's Anatomy for the Artist. From what I remember she has a fine arts approach to it, and spends most of the book talking about anatomy from an art history standpoint and pointing out landmarks you can see in drawings and paintings, but she doesn't cover proportions, construction, or tips for thinking in terms of 3d shapes. Also her anatomy charts are pretty but hard to read with all of that cross hatching.

Carter Goodrich is a professional illustrator, you damn retard. He's not a furfag.
I only posted the bear pic because it was the biggest one I had.
That's the only "furfag" pic he's ever done, but here's another one if you're gonna get triggered by some bear in a dress.

Question
I really enjoyed Fun With A Pencil and found both Figure Drawing For All Its Worth and Drawing the Head and Figure incredible as teaching resources but never really warmed up to Creative Illustration or Successful Drawing(or Eye of the Painter for that matter but didn't really even bother to skim that).
Is this the case with anyone else? How should these other 3 books be used?

Successful Drawing is Loomis' Perspective Drawing book. Its honestly one of the better perspective books that relate perspective in Figure Drawing. Its a must just because of it.

Creative Illustration is a nice book, but really outdated in terms of color theory. Keep that in mind and pick the things that apply for you...

Eye of the Painter... I havent even read it wholely because its not even seem to be useful at all...
