I started learning pixel art in the end of 2015. And I didn't take it seriously until May 2016 where I started doing it almost daily. I focus on environments, and scenes. For me it's more interesting to draw places rather than characters. There is a lot for me to learn.

I've had regular game nights for a long time, first Shadowrun and now D&D, which I do tokens and character art for. At first it was mostly pencil sketches or brush tools with my tablet, but I've been on a serious pixel streak lately. It started with an animation project I was working on, and now it's all I do. It's fun coming back to pixels. I used to do stick figures and guns in MSPaint all the time when I was a kid.

Starting with the first gif I made.

It's so weird to use hue shifting for coloring. I mean when you reduce the saturation you als have to reduce the value/brightness.
Has the color spectrum (pic related) any use? I mean the darker it gets it stays at 100% saturation. It's so weird.

>It's so weird to use hue shifting for coloring. I mean when you reduce the saturation you als have to reduce the value/brightness.

Not necessarily no. What I usually do is I reduce the saturation with the highlights. And add more saturation to dark colors.
The best way to learn hueshifting in my opinion is to work with a grayscale, and focus on values. Then add the colors later. Shift them toward blue or yellow, but keeping the same values. And I use the color tint spectrum

Does anyone here learn and practice by copying other pixel art? May I ask what kind of pixel sprites you choose?
I'm not sure about sprites in older games like pic related (Castlevnia: Aria of Sorrow for GBA). Since the GBA had limited colors the artists had a small palette to work with. This makes it hard to learn from.

I think the upper body looks pretty good, the right one is better than the left for sure.

Choosing to go with black outlines and all I would suggest making the sprite asymmetrical (look at Ragnarok Online sprites for reference)

The reason why I suggest it is that the way the legs are positioned looks awkward and I think you can achieve a better effect going asymmetrical, with the body at the very least.

There are some places where the outline becomes 2px thick which is fine in some cases but I think it misses the mark on the hair behind the bang.

The face looks a bit flat, add more shades to draw more shapes out like the roundness of the cheeks and something that might suggest a nose at the very least.

I think the Eyes on the left had something going for them, they look more alive at the very least but maybe the white highlight should be placed to the right on her left eye (your right)

Thoughts on this? How should I improve it? It's some characters from a tabletop RPG campaign. I saw some shirt with walking dead characters on it called "the samurai" "the ringleader" "the archer" and "the kid". I thought it was kinda gay the first time I saw it but then I thought it'd be interesting to rip off for a pixel art design so I did.

Keep the rigging to either side, so it doesn't gum up the center background, and don't overdraw the rope. Separate, single width lines.

The PCs are also kinda rigid, standing in formation with weapons drawn while on deck. Redrawing more relaxed poses would help (leaning on the railing, etc.), and place them in nonsymmetrical positions. The deck is also pretty bare. It could use some rope coils, cargo, or a small anti-personnel cannon.

it's a really big sprite, imo.
the form is really lacking, but I don't know how to put it all in words, quite
frankly. the right arm should overlap and cover part of the torso, and should come down about halfway from the knee and waist. the left arm should be partially covered by the torso, especially near the base where the armpit is.
all in all the arms and torso don't look anatomically sound, at it almost looks stiff.
the palette is really bland and uninspiring, so you should spruce it up when you do decide to shade it. perhaps try googling a premade palette, or tweak something like pic related.
hope this helps.

Then why are you struggling so much? You can make art of all the things you draw and paint without turning it into blocky garbage.

Don't polish this turd. Scrap everything below the head and start giving the head facial features. And by that, I don't mean place two black dots and call them eyes, I mean make what is recognizably an eye even when not in the context of a face. If you can't fit something on there (you won't be able to fit everything), enlarge it so you can.

It makes sense that you have some experience with art, since you shaded the boots in a way that gives them some form, but you're not converting shapes into smaller sprites correctly. When you're working with tiny sprites like this, you need to decide which details to leave out, combine, or emphasize, and you're not really doing that. It's impossible to tell what a lot of the details are, because each one is given equal emphasis. What's the triangle thing? Why is his left arm brighter? Is it a band or is he holding a piece of gold or something? Try giving yourself a bigger canvas (for just the head, see how 54 x 54 works) and start working with a size that's a little more familiar. Also remember that you can use pencil or brush tools (1-5 px is good) and scrawl in shitty lines. Not every pixel has to be eloquently placed.

btw, don't put a sprite up against a color used in the sprite, since that might obscure the outline or any details on the edge. Make the BG a color not in the sprite.

>> No.2937029

that's actually quite a good one, i wouldn't listen to the long winded guy. anyway for me the legs don't quite fit, they're sort of spindly and the highest contrast thing in the image, if it's supposed to be like 'sir spindlelegs, famed for his golden chausses' then it's fine though. i wouldn't worry about a face or anything considering the size.

>>2907399
A bit of both, but it really depends on the size of the pixel art I'm making. Obviously if I'm doing something smaller I like to just use my mouse because of better precision. Sometimes even with bigger pieces I'll still just use a mouse but will do the outline work on a tablet.

>> No.2944749

>>2941385
Not that anon, but yes, the torso is a tad large; could lower it by a pixel or two, or raise the crotch area a bit in order to make the legs longer.

A few other things I can notice:
>lots of colors that are hard to distinguish from one another (the light grays in the helmet in particular)
Although I imagine a lot of those are due to JPG artefacting; ALWAYS make sure to save your pixel art as GIF, PNG or whatever file format your drawing program uses (PSD, GAL, etc)
>the dark blue is little too dark and blends with the black; making the upper torso area looking like a blob. Same goes partially for the dark gray.
I feel color is one of those aspects that's hard to get right when you're starting out, but try using a bit more contrast and/or color ramps that don't lead straight to black (like shading yellow with orange rather than muddier browns)
>lots of outlines' corners occupied with black pixels, making it look chunkier
Like, imagine that your black outlines are 1x1 thick. You can't really put 1x2, 2x1 or 2x2 black blocks in your pixel art unless the style or details necessitate it. Here's a page from Pixel-Logic that illustrates the point: http://i.imgur.com/sc0l07h.png
>The sword's tip looks more blunt rather than being sharp

Also minor nitpick is that you have black outlines all around the sprite except the little cloth over his crotch.

>>2907399
I exclusively draw using my tablet, pixel art or not, though pixel art doesn't really need it. I just feel that when I'm just doing broad initial strokes (like getting the basic shape/outline before detailing) it's easier to get the curves right on a pen than a mouse.

I think the trick to making armor look like armor is to use clearer highlights and shadows to suggest shape and light sources. The steel and what not is afterall is a reflective surface with a lot of round shapes. Currently your shadows are very flat, almost cell-shady, which makes the overall picture pop out less.

As for the colors, I think you could use a bit more bold choices. For instance instead of bright blue-ish white for highlights, try something like adding yellow in to the mix, and adding more blue to your shadows.

Some examples I can link:
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/102168.htm (notice how the highlights are yellow here)
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/87916.htm
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/79099.htm

Additionally, dithering and/or "messy" pixel clusters can be used to dictate detail and texture in an armor (though I imagine you want to give it a "cleaner" look, being Silver Knight and what not): http://imgur.com/a/B9VJ8

Here's a quick example I made in a few minutes.

If you wanna make that specific sheep you might wanna try working with a bigger area. There's simply not enough room to make it recognizable as the character you want it to be (for example, the bow being just a black block).

If you're new to it, it's easier to start with a bigger surface and then as you learn more, try to reduce the size and remove unnecessary pixels to get it to a small size like you want. Don't stick to the strictly same shades and colors as your reference image because that's what's making your picture look washed off.

a wip in progress. no references.
how does it look so far?
also, I've hit a brick wall and can't think of how to do the underside, any suggestions?

Gotta start somewhere, so it's all good. It's not exactly the easiest task to visualize how to shade armor, but gotta start somewhere.

I like the shield, though some other parts, like the shoulders, could've used some fine-tuning. Also perhaps as food for thought for later, I think doing a checker dither pattern like that is the best idea for that iron mail skirt thingamajing, as you'd likely have better results with doing a more elaborate pattern. That dithering as is instead makes the skirt look fuzzy at 1x, which likely isn't the intended effect.

>> No.2955343

>>2955337
thanks dude. Yeah, the shoulders are pretty ugly. Any good examples of chain mail?

>> No.2955360

>>2955343
A couple examples I was able to find at a cursory glance:
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/81040.htm - I think this is a simple, yet effective example
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/107883.htm
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/87916.htm - Linked this before, but Cyangmou's work is very solid
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/22480.htm - I'm assuming part of that is chain mail, perhaps?

In any case, I guess the "correct" way to go about it is entirely dependent on the scale of the piece. In smaller sprites something like chain mail would likely be simplified to make it more readable, while at the resolution at which you work varying your colors is the key. Most of the pieces I was able to find actually used a simple checker dither, but it's the way the colors are used to form various solid clumps of chain form the illusion of a tightly knitted cloth of steel. Seems like a good place to start is by figuring out the areas that are illuminated, and shade the surroundings accordingly, mixing the dither clusters together to bring it all together.

I feel like digital painting could really help you out here to learn the ropes.

You could leave it plain and maybe just add some bounce lighting on the underside to separate the leg mass.

Do some people unironically think filtered pixel art is superior? It just baffling to me that someone can consider this an improvement

>> No.2955492

>>2955478
have you ever been on /vr/? people use filters all the time lol

>> No.2955500

>>2955478
the sega CD's colors look over saturated and highly contrasted, the dreamcast filter does a good job of fixing some of the color. the problem with the filter is that it smudges away some of the really cool details, this is especially visible when you look at the cars and people on the bottom 2 screenshots, and the metallic walls, floor and ceilings on the first screenshot. there's a certain appeal to it, imo, but it comes with its flaws as well. the other thing worth considering is that it was viewed on crt monitors, so it might have looked completely different than how we see it now on digital screens.

Filthy degenerates, yes.

>>2955500
You're right that it looks different on a CRT monitor. Especially things like high contrast lights would stand out with a bloom effect.
You still have shit taste though if you consider those colors an improvement :^)

A lot of people don't think of pixel as an art form, they're just old, obsolete squares we had because of low screen resolutions.

I make pixel art and even I enjoy some Super Nintendo games with filters. Not A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy, or the Secret of Mana series though. Those games are pure art.

Shit ton of sprites and backgrounds, but with zero coding experience, it'd be hard for me to try to make the game.

your drawings have some pretty interesting textures that aren't translating to your pixel version because: 1. the pixel art version is too small. 2. there is no contrast between the colors/ there are no highlights. try setting up a color ramp (pixelfor.me can be a good place to start) and definitely make the artwork bigger to show off the textures.

Its not legit. Its actually pretty god damn easy to create in Photoshop and the creator of that GIF has used the crab nebula image in the sky. The rest is pretty much self explanatory if you know how to create crap like this.

I'm making a 16x16 favicon and I'm wondering if just downscaling the original vector is as good as it gets or if I can do anything to improve the small size readability by manually adjusting it (i.e. hand placing pixels)? If there's more to be done, I'd like a pointer to the resource that would help me learn it.
