Dear Teal, I have a question. In some of your critiques you mentioned certain aspects of the composition having certain meanings. Like: if there is too much space between two characters, it gives of a vibe of tension, also hands being hidden gives the impression that the character has something to hide or is dishonest. So I was wondering, is there a recourse like a book or a site you could recommend on this subject? Or do things like this come with experience and gathering little bits of knowledge here and there?

The concept of personal space and body language can be derived from life drawing, or some basic study in psychology/sociology, or acting.

Keep in mind that art is cross-disciplinary. The architectural designer needs to know something about building. The roboticist needs to know biomechanics. The comic artist needs to know storytelling and acting.

I found this interesting artist on drawr: http://drawr.net/show.php?id=4842922 (click on the images to view the process)

It seems like he doesn't have any construction at all and just uses line while drawing in all the detail.

nips are weird like that. i'd guess it has to do with how they're taught to write their moonrunes in perfect proportion to a standard.

i remember seeing a video from studio mir that had something similar, animators just chugging through contours in perfect proportion, no construction lines, hands like fuckin surgeons.

but look how horribly inefficient the artist you linked is, he redoes every line at least 3 or 4 times and then ends up erasing it a few minutes later. ends up looking mostly okay but you can tell he's just copying a style.

Generally, the people who wonder if they really need construction or not are the ones that need it. If you have to ask, chances are you're still learning and construction necessary as you haven't internalized it yet. Once you're proficient, it mostly comes down to personal preference.

>How is this possible?

This is in some ways misleading. Do not think of this as an argument against construction.

Construction is about putting down ideas and clarifying them. Ultimately, construction cannot compensate for a sense of balance if one does not have it, not does it improve line work if one is a poor draughtsman.

An artist who already has a clear idea of what he wishes to draw, and has vast experience drawing it, can do so without construction. Animators and comic artists must draw quickly and efficiently, so they'll skip the construction if it's something they're familiar with already. When designing a new character, or tackling a complex scene, or drawing a new pose, the lines will become sketchier and construction will be used.

You need to start working on a more advanced form of gestures like Vilppu/Hampton. That's what's really gonna help you draw more fleshed out characters from the start. The more fluid your gestures are the more life they'll have from the start. Pic related are 5 minute sketches where you can clearly see very advanced levels of gesture at work under the hood.

As someone obsessed with gesture images of this level are like porn for me.

Honestly, you're limiting and doubting yourself too much. If you put in the time and effort, you can start drawing faster. Do 30-60 sec gestures (posemaniacs) and/or draw from life. to be honest i think a lot of people have the wrong idea about gesture on this board. they get too caught up in the specifics of how hampton or vilppu execute them and try to mimic their specific style instead of focusing on what gesture is truly about.

all gesture is supposed to accomplish is a basic composition of the figure, using curves to lead the eye and indicating motion with long lines of action, while maybe suggesting a little form here and there.

i also don't get why such a big deal is made about time.

a big component of it is psychological.
the thing that i've noticed is that when i'm mindlessly doodling shit, everything feels very fluid and gestural.
but once i sat down and was like, "i'm going to draw toshinou kyouku", i started feeling like there were stakes and that i couldn't mess up or start over. i don't know quite how to explain it, but the tension works its way into your drawing and you end with something stiff.

Like I told you a couple of threads ago the best way for you to get a handle on this is to draw from references. Find an animator's character sheets if possible or just find several images in different angles. Make note of exactly how facial features are handled as that's going to determine the likeness more than anything else.

Compared to last time though this is a good improvement, I like where you're at now to be perfectly honest, you've reached an attractive medium. I'd rather see where you go from here instead of going for a more generic look (even though you mentioned that's what you're aiming for). However as far as likeness goes the only thing that would make me guess it's Kyoko at this point is the bow and the uniform, nothing about the face says it at all right now.

Your main problem in that regard are the eyes as that anime has a fairly distinct way of doing them that I've seen recently. The irises are wider ellipses than usual and as a result take up more of the eye's space (you barely see any white) and eye eyelash perks up at the side. The highlights on them are also pretty simple, one fat ellipse overlapping a small one. Generally for the style, you're really off right now. You need to arc that upper lid/lashes rather than enclose the eye and taper them at one end. The nose is barely there also, it's just a tiny dot and sometimes completely omitted. And finally the mouth, like in most anime is a simple line that's sometimes broken in the middle to imply the lips pressing against each other. Also, generally speaking you need to push for more locks of hair as well, currently you're pretty reserved with them.

i've been telling you people: animu and cartoons heavily rely on negative space.
-KNOW your proportions
-know your style

and the rest is mental work about putting your knowledge and skill together.
the fundamentals are always the same but the process is very different with dynamic line drawings. don't heavily construct all the fucking time, just draw freely. only construct to figure out distances you can't figure out without constructing. constructing shouldn't be the standard.

>> No.1438849

>>1438845
cont

even people like loomis can sketch out a face and body without constructing. and they can do various angles too, just like most cartoonists and artists.
just focus on UNDERSTANDING the subject you are drawing.
like i said before, get as many proportions and measurements into your head as possible, and use negative space as a guideline to make you remember how something is supposed to look like.

when someone experienced tries to draw a hand in a weird angle what are they thinking about?
they will think about:
-how a hand looks from the front (contour, measurements)
-the contour of a hand in a similar angle as the one they are trying to draw
-let their head figure out the rest and put it all together.

it's true that where i'm at right now isn't the worst place in the world, but i will keep all of these points in mind so since i do want to at least have the ability to draw in a more generic anime style, as stupid as that sounds.
what i'd really like to start focusing on even more than that is getting more expressiveness in my faces, since they all tend to be rather drab/bored.

I was referring to the way features are handled for that anime not that specific character, obviously you'll have a lot of characters with sameface within many anime series.

What I was trying to get at is that the way features are handled is what marks the difference between people saying "That really looks like Kyouko" and "That looks like Kyouko in a different artist's style". It's also a way you can tell certain animation studios apart as you'll slowly start to notice constants/parallels in things like visual, emotive, and comedic devices. Pic kinda related, the eyes are a dead giveaway.

However in this anon's case >>1438638 he deviated way too far from the general style where the design is no longer distinct through line alone. At this point he'd have to compensate with color if he wanted to make it obvious that we were looking at Kyouko.

>You often seem to change the character's personality and body language so that it becomes a completely different character.

The main purpose of the corrections are to show process, which operate independently of style, proportions, and intent. I have no reason to quarrel with another artist over his/her message, so I rarely deal with it unless there is something critically wrong in the delivery of that message.

In the image you quoted, none of the notes raised a concern over the "body personality," as you call it, so I am not sure why you'd bother to raise that point. The only foci, to the exclusion of every other correction that could have been made to that image, was a change the foreshortening of the torso and raising awareness of correctly drawing body parts that have been obscured through foreshortening. I can't imagine how those would cease to be applicable were the character made happy or sad.

These corrections cannot be all-inclusive, for both my sanity and for the other artists. I could, for instance, have written about 4 more paragraphs about the proper deformation of her weapon based on the location of the pivot/how she is holding it. I'm sure, then, there would be people who complain that such a thing is a minor detail compared to the face construction, or the body, or the physics of the costume, and so on. If that is what you wish, though, we am sure we can reach some financial arrangement to do that.

Those who simply wish to have other artists "fix" their drawings, would be more rewarded by taking their images to requests threads on /a/ or /co/.

Yeah I see what you're talking about. I don't have much to add to the discussion actually, I just felt that you change the character's personality quite a bit, and was wondering if the reason is constructive or... to make it more enjoyable for yourself or whatever. I was pretty much only talking about the images that you draw for comparison, since it feels that you're drawing a corrected version of the character. The point was Crona is very loose and "slow" by nature, while Maka is very perky and alert and quick. I don't know the word for that so I used "body personality".

I'm banking on personal enjoyment. It seems like the point he was trying to get across in his posts and critiques is that the construction matters, that most of the critiques are addressing construction, and that after a drawing has been properly constructed, then you can take it in any direction you want.

I guessing that the finished character is just the "do whatever" part of it.

There's a difference between being critical of your work and saying your work sucks. The latter feels like a defense mechanism and an attempt to garner pity, rather than genuinely helpful posts.
