Over the Garden Wall. It’s a “Halloween” special that aired on Cartoon Network ten years ago, spanning ten 11min episodes. I say “Halloween”, but the theme is really more about Autumn than anything else. It’s actually a phenomenal timeless classic, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it eventually cements itself as part of American holiday canon in a few years (like Rudolph/Frosty). You put a gun to my head and force me to only choose one show to recommend to people for the rest of my life, this one is seriously in contention for it, it’s that good

Why is perspective so hard?
why is anatomy so hard?
it doesn't make sense, this is the hardest thing to do on earth. For some reason we can see things but we can't even draw them naturally without decades of practice. Isn't that fucking insane? Think about it, it shouldn't be that hard to draw a cube in perspective, but most people can't do it. I'm sitting here spending 15 minutes redrawing eyes on a head because I can't place them correctly. And when another artist can do it, he's doing it out of muscle memory, he wasn't just born with the innate ability, he had to draw hundreds of heads. Drawing is just completely inhuman and unnatural, NOTHING about it is intuitive.

Good job anon. Try putting the neck more towards the center of the head, it's rather far back on her The left leg is way too wonky compared to the pretty competent rest of her body

The hair in this piece is lacking interest to me. It is very simplified, but without a good fundamental of shape language making appealing. You should grind some hair studies. This is a video I like to come back to for stylized hair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ3PUuCchvI

>>7326460
What is the purpose of this exercise anon? If you aren't learning properly, repeating the same thing many times is just reinforcing bad habits. I would suggest grinding boxes in perspective for a little bit, and then reading morpho's simplified forms. Go through the book (you can find it on ehentai) and draw along with it. When I did that I saw gains like crazy.

Mostly I want you to get away from the circle and stick method your using. Once you understand shapes in 3d space, it is far better and easier

You use lots of short lines to imply texture and they kind of make everything look like its made of wood. If you like ink, you might benefit from the drawabox section on texture. I see some hatching mixed in there for shading. Maybe start by using line weight and solid, black drop shadows to convey coarse detail and, with time, you might learn to shade with a finer fineliner.

Your curves are pretty uniform, that's why they look so round, almost everything looks like a C or (. If you add some straight lines and vary the inflexion points of your lines it will look better.

Exercises you can do for this is 3P draw 3 points and draw a curve that crosses those points like in a bezier curve tool in digital. 4P draw 4 points and draw a close shape same idea.

Also not all lines you see are done with a single stroke some if not most are a composite of different lines that when connected seem like a single stroke. like L1 and L2.

And finally, draw what you know, this means anatomy, for example why is there a dip in the hip or why is there a strange curve on the thigh? These are problems that can be solved by taking into account what is under the skin, and having a printout of an ecorche at hand is a good tool.

You're just missing the "right path" on two lines. That's all.
It is VERY subtle, but enough to create that illusion, fooling the mind on what's the "correct appealing shape".
Like the other anon said, Just keep at it, till you start to "see" those simple details. This is like when you look for your keys and the keys are right there in your face. You just can't help it, you won't see what's wrong till you get used to creating that shape over and over again. Just don't blame yourself, it's how it is.
At one point you will WANT that leg to have that certain look, like a "chicken leg" shape, or any other mental recognizable shape you attach to it. You will know how to make it right, every time.

I wish drawing didn't take so long to learn, I just want to be a hobbyist, but the time investment needed to reach a level of "not-shit" that would make me feel happy about a drawing is pretty daunting. By the time I get good enough to do what I want, at my current speed, all that I am interested in would have fallen out of fashion and I'd have gotten too old to be a fandom person. And I suck at everything at once so I am not sure of what to do, practice wise. I'm just doodling for fun right now, but even that isn't going to be enough to get anywhere at my current throughput. I'm not giving up, I'm just whining a bit.

So I’ve been interested in drawing characters and drawing for a long time and I only just recently had the motivation to sit down and start drawing. I mainly just try to pick a reference of an anime girl I like and try to draw it exact but I know that that isn’t the best way to build actual drawing ability. I just don’t know what I should focus on and where to go once I start learning the fundamentals. I’m pretty bad at drawing shapes or even drawing lines in general. I’ve been told by a few people that my faces and hair are ok and that I don’t seem like a complete beginner but I just feel kinda lost. Was following drawabox because I hear that that’s a good place to start, but I found it hard to stick with but I wanna continue using it. I guess it feels overwhelming because I’m trying to do too many things at once.I know it’s a long slow journey of getting good at art so I’d be open to any and all critiques and suggestions of where I should go from here. Picrel is Power chainsaw man I tried to draw a few days ago. I’d like to draw anime characters I guess but I’d also love to draw more realistic figures too. Like I said I’m open and grateful for any critiques or suggestions of what to focus on or routines and studies that have helped you fellow anons.

I think you're doing well so far at proportioning and expressing the curves of the body. If you want to narrow down your area of focus to just one thing for a while, I suggest practicing mapping out the head and face. I see you are using shapes and guidelines for construction, which is good. Try searching up videos on YouTube about drawing anime-style heads for a good starting point.

I'm by no means an expert but I have been in a similar spot not too long ago. My drawing in case you would like to judge before taking advice:

Nope. Just learn how to depict basic volumes with lines. Cross contours that move over the surface of the form. You can shade stuff too I guess if you want but it’s unnecessary for learning anatomy. Look at the Morpho books. It’s almost pure line. Bridgman, coarse hatching. Hampton, line to show the form and color coding to shows you which muscles are which. Before you learn anatomy, you do have to be able to feel the form and depict and understand 3D volumes. You can do that with line or with shading, either works. But learn to use just lines first. You also have to have good observation skills, ofc.

Close, this is Ishtar's sister Ereshkigal! Thank you for the compliments. Your Power is cute, she's in her pose from the anime opening right?

This is a video I studied a bit, it's quite dense but I found it helpful to be studied in small portions at a time. I still haven't fully grasped the head from all the different angles he demonstrates. His art is a bit more stylized with exaggerated forms than what I'm going for, but the fundamentals he goes over are what's most important.

i'm using an obsolete intuos 5, one of the large ones, that i bought on ebay a long time for $50. it's really well used and scratched but it's good enough for my level of skill. after calibrating it properly, it's no harder to use than drawing traditionally.

i gave it a try. this was a hard pose. it's much easier for me to learn from copying line art instead of photos or life. learn how to draw a pant leg separately, then a foot, then the face, then the arms, and then eventually you can put it all together, instead of tackling a very hard ref and getting discouraged.

a lot of artists, stylized cartoonists especially, don't copy photo references exactly, they impose their pre-memorized shapes (style) onto the reference, and in fact many realistic artists do the same too, which is why you see so many people copying from Michelangelo or Sargent or Bridgman books and learning from the masters. it's just too hard to filter life, so beginners are better off doing master copies, imo. instead of instantly teleporting to the 11th dimension and having your ego immediately collapse you may as well work your way up through the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and eventually you might be able to meet God face to face without burning to death

also, this guy is right>>7327676, pay attention to how much higher up the foot is in the ref, than his head. little relationships like that can make all the difference

Buddy illustrators pretty much need to have mastery over every fundie. For splash arts it's character driven, so you'd need to excel in composition, lighting, color, value, perspective, materials, textures, post processing, I mean it's the whole nine yards. There are plethora of splash art process videos where they go over their workflows (layer masking for lighting, clipping masks, blending modes, concept iterations/revisions). If your goal is to be a splash artist, I'd say start by picking an artist you admire and look into how they started, their journey, emulate their art. It's a big goal you're after and easy to get overwhelmed with how far you have to go. As a matter of fact get used to feeling overwhelmed with the skill disparity. Splash artists are insanely skilled despite what some people here like to say.

You should start by creating you own splash art of a character that already exists. Think about composition, how to make that character the primary focus. Think story, think silhouette, think action, dynamic. Then make a piece. Identify what you struggled with, what you need to improve on, and that'd be your basis for what fundies you need to work on.

Do you just go straight to ink or do you draw beforehand? Some bits look pretty good from an inking perspective, but are clearly wonky from a construction standpoint. Dark Willow looks promising, with a bit more detail or control. Shadow Shaman and Dazzle are recognizable, but both of their mouths look iffy, as if you don't really know how to get it down. The bike looks cool due to the rendering, but any ellipses and the helm indicate you don't really have everything down just yet. I think you're on to something really cool if you sharpen up your drawing chops and give your inking some time to develop.

Yeah you could split the object into 2 pieces and have 1 piece in the layer above and the other below the object, or you could manually erase at the edge but both of these ways are fucking annoying. just wondering if there's some fancy method people use

The biggest art hack is to only draw things you want to have sex with.
That's why I'm a wildlife painter.

Couple of practices, thoughts? Was thinking top left's right arm (our left) looks a bit undefined, not sure how to go about it without using too many lines

Let me see if I've got this right....

We all should only draw, what we WANT to have sex with, okay, okay....
In that caSE...I should draw a holocaust.

just wing it, just put extra attention to the middle third of the face where the focus is. If it rings truth the audience will be ok with it.

How do you know how to draw the stupid ball-head-thing at every angle? Of course, art books will have multiple angles, but what if I want to draw someone looking up, with their head slightly tilted to the left? Or, using picrel as an example, what if I want to draw someone looking down and to the right? There's no example for that to learn from.

I'd like to see Coppola adapt a Frank Miller project.

It's all about which way to face your construction lines.

See that middle line down the face in your pic? Draw it "looking" different ways, and then use it to put the other lines in the correct spots. its not always going to look right until you get some solid practice in.
