If you take a western art history class covering the 17th century and earlier, you'll find they're basically bible study courses but with pictures. Religion was such a central part of art creation for literal thousands of years, you have to do a lot of research on religion to understand the meaning and context surrounding much of classical art.

Nowadays It's not so important for artists to be well-versed in the Bible or Greek mythology, but they're still great sources of inspiration (as well as other religions like Buddhism or Islam.)
