I'm considering charging for quick portraits to raise funds for a friend.
I'm a professional illustrator, but portraits are not my thing, and I'm terribly afraid of messing it up in front of strangers.
Tips and personal accounts are most welcome.

with a couple weeks practice you could outdraw picrel.
to impress strangers i think you only really need a few months of practice. most local artists like that arent very skilled but they get a draw from being in the area

The thing that impresses them the most isn't the relative skill but the performance and novelty of being drawn in real time you autist. It's why people also pay 60 dollars for a shitty couple's caricature.

Weebs are impressed by anything that is "pretty" so stuff like Act-Age and Oshi no Ko is enough.
Normies are impressed by anything "realistic" they're literal NPCs.

I already can, to be frank. It's just that I'm not consistently happy with the output, they're kinda hit or miss in my eyes. But then again, I may care too much and my "customers" would be happy with whatever.

>> No.7288788

>>7288786
if your output is inconsistent you just need more volume. customers also probably wouldnt be able to tell if its slightly worse than youre normally capable of. if youre really concerned just use heavier construction than usual to standardize the process i think

>> No.7289045

normies HATE perspective and draftsmanship. subconsciously it reminds them of math and analysis. they think a retard doodler is more creative than an industrial designer.

KJG is the exception that proves the rule, and really they were just impressed by the doodling not his skill in perspective. it's why retards will look at a hitler painting and say it's pretty good.

>> No.7289054

It's extremely easy to impress normies. There are hacks that would literally only copy pre existing artwork/manga panels and get millions of views/followers.

If you were a professional illustrator you wouldn't need to ask such retarded questions.

>> No.7289059

Pretty sure it's a universal experience for any creative. The general masses are very easy to please, so easy they've literally created formulas for how to appeal to the most masses. It's most prevalent in the music industry, but there's a formula for pretty much any creative endeavor that guarantees normies will go gaga over it. For art it's been edge lighting, warm colors and pretty girl for quite a while now.

The real question is why are you so reluctant to accept it?

just draw a realistic or semi realistic sketch

To do this sort of live sketch thing you have to become a normie yourself. It's one of the most normie art paths aside from art teacher (which isn't really an artist)

Sorry to bust your bubble, but that's normal, normies are like that with art as long as they are not paying you, you are no different that a 5yo doodling to them, now if anyone had ask you if you are selling your art or asked you for com that would be a different thing
