Mental references aka memorize stuff. When artists talk about a mental library or visual library they're just talking about stuff they've memorized or remembered from drilling

>never been able to imagination draw. just copy references like an autistic moron

>get a medical marijuana card and try a puff of marijuana for the first time
>start drawing
>I scribble on the paper and start to ""see"" extremely detailed drawings inside of my scribbles
>faces appear inside of the grain of the paper
>God tells me that I must dedicate my art to Christ
>hear Steve Huston and Vilppu intrusively inside of my inner monologue repeating tips I forgot years ago
>get immersed in everything I draw. whole stories start to emerge inside of my mind that make my scribbles feel as if they're real characters that I can interact with

is this what imagination drawing feels like?

I wonder if he has visualisation problems, because I don't think most people would draw such a poor looking... 'kangaroo'.
They might draw it overly simplistic or cartoony, but it wouldn't look like that crab person.
And why was his first attempt at drawing from imagination seemingly streamed? What was he thinking? Had he never tried drawing for himself before?

He fancies himself a "god", it's a mental condition. It takes quite some nerve to put oneself in front of a camera and behave like a shameless delusional jackass, without any remorse or self-control. Traits of a genetic clown, must be in his dna.

Total meme, if you want to draw well use tons of references and as you progress you'll get better at mixing and exaggerating your source material for appeal. This is how pretty much every illustrator does it, except for once in a million freaks of nature like Kim Jung Gi.

>because I don't think most people would draw such a poor looking... 'kangaroo'.
He wasn't actually intending to draw a kangaroo. I think his intention was to draw some kind of cartoon andromorphic animal like Goofy or Bugs Bunny from imagination but he didn't really have a plan on what animal it would be.
The kangaroo comes from someone in the live chat suggesting what it could be after it had been drawn.

Not really, even Loomis wants you to Learn to draw from imagination and not just copying all he does and it's a useful skill to have even when drawing from reference since you could alter it to suit your needs

My problem is that if I, for example, look at a face and reference it then I can do the vilppu thing where I feel around the form of what I'm seeing and mentally wrap contour lines around all the forms. I can do the Huston and simplify what I'm seeing into less complicated geometric shapes and sculpt it up. I can do the Watts thing where you look at what you're seeing and break it down into light and shadow shapes. I can do most of the methods I've been taught but if you take away what I'm looking at then I can't do shit.

I can draw something that looks like a mediocre version of the most generic version of a head from angles that I've done before a lot, but I can't do anything fun or creative

I can kind of be creative with figure drawing and see poses that I'd like to draw in ny minds eye and reference that, but with heads I can't see shit.

So is it actually possible to draw anything from your mind like KJG or is everyone just copying references and tracing over photos?

I often want to draw something original and dynamic, but if I'm copying a reference then it is neither original nor dynamic.

Yes it's possible but it is it's own skill that you have to practice and develop
