>the chin controlling the direction of the head which no one tells you
what does that even mean? the head is three dimensional, so there are three axes on which the head can be rotated. as Loomis himself conceptualizes the orientation of the head, it's controlled by the axis through the centers of the head:
>The cranium is more like a ball than anything else. To represent the ball as a solid sphere, we must establish an axis, like the nail through the ball at the top. Through the centers established by the axis, we can divide the ball into quarters and again at the equator. Now if we were to slice off a fairly thin slice on each side, we will have produced a basic shape that very closely maches the cranium.

this is awesome and wouldnt look out of place in a published manga imo. Her left hand is a bit off, its floating above the seat instead of resting on it, and the construction around the knuckles is wrong.

Also I think the shading on the right leg looks out of place.

The sphere is fine but the flattening of the sides with a completely random circle/oval is what i find weird, the ear always indicates the positioning of the head cause it's attached to the chin so there is no need to draw the flattening circle. The eyebrow line is a scam, it leads nowhere once you start rotating the sphere and should be avoided at all costs if you ain't drawing realistic robots
I have 300 flattened spheres like the one you just posted, it's a complete dead end, it serves no purpose if you don't know the proportions of what you want to draw.

Focusing on the ear makes everything easier, cause the ear will always be there, bit lower when the head is tilted up, bit bigger when the head is tilted downwards, literally infinite loomis, just apply the correct proportions of the style you want to copy/inspired by and you can actually start learning.

Also this is personal experience from what i've learning from drawing loomis shitspheres and twitch artists (korean chinese). Go home western man.

I used loomis method on all the heads I tried at >>7189402. It was the reason I spent almost a week drawing different heads at all. Some points when you're working on that while looking at your attempts, since those were similar to mine a week ago too!

Both anime and cartoon heads normally doesn't work with precise perfect circles. They're most of time horizontal or vertical eggs. Because their skulls are at core different too.
>7191050
>the chin controlling the direction of the head which no one tells you
It's not the chin that controls the direction of the head. It's the nose. Save this information on your soul if you wish to draw stylized heads, because it's common to the chins being threw a bit more to right or left than the nose line (chins are what still fuck me until now).
>every single youtuber and artist that i've seen fucks off from the guide lines when they use loomis at some point, it's like they are there as a suggestion.
That's the point. You don't need to apply the entirety of loomis for everything. If one or more aspects of it is not viable to your drawing, adjust or remove it.
Anime heads are weird eggs with asymmetrical chins. Cartoons are horrendous triangles, circles and squares. Alien and animal heads can go all the way having weird distorctions here and there. Drawing is not like cooking. It's a problem resolving work. Find out what's different and apply it to your State of the Art.

Ah yes, today I decided to draw some body refs to study a bit and make myself sleepy because I got too dopamined yesterday I ended not sleeping at all. Did 4 pages.

No dude trust me, it's not the nose it's the ears. It controls everything, the eyes, the eyebrows, the chin, the neck and the skull.

And i understand that anime / manga use different proportions, that's yet another reason why loomis is not useful and it leads to a dead end. you can easily understand proportions by using the shape of the head and the ear.

>the flattening of the sides with a completely random circle/oval is what i find weird, the ear always indicates the positioning of the head cause it's attached to the chin so there is no need to draw the flattening circle
as Loomis explains, which he's right about, the flattened sides are a simplification of the head which give the preliminary geometric shape more likeness than just a sphere, there's nothing "random" about it. with the proper placement of the cross on the front plane of the head you can extend it through the flattened side(s) of the head to get a guestimate of where the ears are to be placed. it also allows for a more natural attachment or transition from the side of the head to the chin. if you prefer another method, by all means, but to say it's "completely random" shows either a lack of reading comprehension or willful ignorance on your part.

dude... obviously the proportions outlined are generic and need to be manipulated depending on the particular dimensions of the subject. Loomis literally goes into that before any of the actual generic proportions. every method, Loomis, Vilppu, Hampton, Huston, etc., offer a generic template which you can manipulate as desired/necessary. that still doesn't mean the chosen proportions are "random."

sure i get it but i can't do that cause i'm a beg, i can't even do the circle on a 3/4 head correctly, so why not start with the proportions instead? Loomis is doing the same thing but with extra steps and those steps always lead to the same skull/head type unless you already know what you are doing, bonus points if you draw extra extra lines for the eyebrows and nose.

i know the top of the ear is the line for the eyebrow and i can move the line a little if it doesn't fit the style. I also know that the bottom of the ear leads to the nose apex/mouth and i can change it a little bit if it doesn't. It's like you guys want to struggle. Loomis is a dead end for begs

for the umpteenth time, no one is telling you you have to use the Loomis method. your critiques either show a misunderstanding or a personal difference in method preference. to the extent that you have the latter, just find someone else's method or adapt his as you see fit.

I don’t know where I’m at. I’m sure I am blind to faults that are glaring to others because I once felt very proud of this drawing and similar drawings but their reception from other people tells me I’m not at impressive as I thought. Would I be right in saying my figures are proficient? Perspective? Anatomy? Are MSpaint drawings so appealing to anyone else as they are to me? Would you look at this drawing for longer than a second?

I drew it from imagination, with a Wacom tablet, on MSpaint, using the pencil and the smallest line weight. Any criticism, delivered in whichever form is appreciated, I am without direction.

The only other thing is the staff, it's not a straight line. That's important, the eye can pick quickly that the staff it's not straight.

It's not a dumb question, it's just hard to answer because it all boils down to the same old "grind your fundamentals" exercise.. That guy did so much figure grinding that he can take a blob and adding the right proportions and the right bendings in the right place, shape it into anything he wants. Because he already "knows" how a woman figure looks like, a kid figure, a baby figure, a fat man figure, a goblin figure, an skeleton, a dog, a horse, he knows the REAL "silhouette and shape" of all of that, so he can make a simple line-art/shape to look like it.

So you just can't escape the process of learning how a real dog looks like, or a T-rex. If you don't have the basic understanding of how to draw those things, then you can't do any further mental process to simplify those shapes, taking shortcuts, simplifying, and "make it happen", you just can't. You need the basic knowledge to turn that into a thing that looks like it successfully. And to get that "knowledge" you don't have to "read a whole library" or "study" you just have to DRAW.

Face is fine (C+), the right eye in particular has a very nice and complete shape. The hair seems to be doing a lot of heavy lifting to cover up the wonky anatomy. Figure out and finish the neck and shoulders and the face will improve. Then start pushing values in the hair and clothing and then start making some fucking artistic decisions. Art is about conveyance, no matter how vague or vapid. Shapes, colors, costume and/or makeup can help to tell a story. Something as simple as a unique article of clothing or a shock of color can add depth and complexity to a piece. A three quarter turn charcoal portrait tells me nothing

It looks like your figure is squating to fit in the frame. Look at what didn't translate from the reference. The negative space between the arms and legs of the reference image creates easy apeal through echoing and repeating shapes. The upward angled face, while still looking at the viewer conveys confidence and charisma, which matches the pose. I have no idea what yours is trying to convey. Also, I can't tell if the pattern in you solid colors is from artifacting or intentional. If it's intentional, please reconsider, it makes the piece look cheap.

Couple crits tho. The nose looks like a slit. Render shape. Back (right) breast is too low, bring that sucker up, or bring the other down and reduce mass. Feet are too close together, and we should be seeing the heel and a bit more of the sole on the back (right) foot. >My current "end goal" is to make my own game. No, i won't tell you what it will be about or how it will play like. First, i need to get good in drawing itself and that could take so long i might give up on the game in the end. And secondly, you could "steal" my idea and make it first :-)
>Drawing is surprisingly fun and very complex activity. It enables me to listen to audio books and honestly, there is even a certain social status which comes with it. there's obviously something, or some number of things, that are hindering his progress, but I don't think his fundamental philosophy of "gettin' gud" now is wrong. if you don't yet have the skills to make something with a certain level of quality, you're just going to be polishing a turd at the end of the day. it's going to look better or worse depending on your total skills, and even a longer, finished work is an opportunity to learn something, but you're still not likely to reach a breakthrough and come to a full understanding by just working on your dream project. he talks about listening to audiobooks while he draws, so perhaps a major aspect of his shortcomings is his lack of concentration.

Did you just draw what you see? Or did you deconstruct your favorite artist by using simple construction? Do you use just use cylinders and ovals?

I can't draw a figure without making at least 2 ovals for the torso, now about the shapes, I like to use cylinders for the thighs and depending on the perspective I replace the ovals with boxes for the torso
I recommend copying the artist you like, practicing the method you feel most comfortable with, but if you haven't found a method yet you can try to find an artist who posts the sketch process and try to emulate it. Lucky for me, my favorite artist posts this type of sketch a lot(picrel)

I'd say you are in the correct path, however as you said these are doodles, not something that can really be critiqued substantially, however if we are talking about dynamism and form, these are alright. Try to give yourself time limits between poses, like 30 seconds, 1, 2, 5, 10 minutes and so on and see how good are you at capturing form, dynamism and detail within the time frame. grab a few poses, do that, comeback and someone or myself can give you more valuable feedback, oh and remember to post the poses.

that's fair. that said, it's worth considering whether adding an appropriate background at your ability would take away from whatever skill the rest of your drawing has, add to it, or more or less be on par with it.
>do you think i should focus on studying figures or on learning how to render properly?
it shouldn't matter what I think, ultimately. presumably no one's got a gun to your head forcing you do draw, so what you do is your own choice. if you want to improve your rendering, then improve your rendering; if you want to improve your figure drawing, draw figures; if you want to improve both, draw both. by your own admission your knowledge of rendering is particularly lacking, so perhaps that would be more fruitful to work on at present. but you could very well spend some time on figures instead - nothings stopping you from doing so. just figure out what fundamentals you want to work on, consider how that will/can play into other non-study-related projects you might want to do, and set up a more or less detailed course for working on them; that would be my recommendation, at least.

Pic rel is a quick redraw so you can decide if my advice is worth it

I would recommend the following, try to get photo references of real women/tails/fish. Using figures for reference is fine but you need to solidify your basics.

For 3d, one thing that may help is to draw 3d boxes and create 3d shapes like cylinders kinda similar to what you were doing with the neck and tail sketch but remember real anatomy wont follow shapes like that. You'll need to use reference learn the actual muscle structure of the arm/head etc is useful for creating the right shapes. Another tip to put the correct shapes in the right perspective is to create a perspective grid, then place 3d boxes and draw your character within the box reference but MAKE SURE that the 3d boxes you're using align with the perspective lines or else it'll be wonky and defeat the purpose.

This is personal preference and I wouldn't go for that look but lookup pushup bras. For booba, they don't squish together like that unless you push them together from the sides. Same for the tail, fish tails don't bend like that unless you want to imply she's just wearing a fishtail swimsuit and has knees.

One last thing, I know it's a sketch but try to avoid a millionscritchy scratchy lines ~.~ it's always better to have one continuous confident line especially for a sketch you don't wanna spend all your time trying to find the correct line in a haystack. Try to minimize the number of lines you use to 2 or 3 per contour until you get better control.

I know it's a lot of info and it wont come to you all at once. I would try to continue to draw pieces that you enjoy and want to see and focus only one one or two aspects that you wanna do better than last time. Good luck anon

The bump is the forearm bone , the ulna, popping out due to weak pinky muscles. There i a subtle twist in the hand that makes it flay out. Its quite common. The other dips are simply the connection of the hand to the fore arm. There is no perfect analogy, but its like how you have that dip where the bicept connects to the forearm, or the calf connectects to the knee. Its not too complicated, just that the gentleness of the curves can be a bit of a struggle.

For resources, jakedontdraw makes videos that show how easy portait painting can be if you just focus on simple values and starting with a big brush for the initial color blocks, and james gurney has a youtube channel and famous books about painting mostly on lighting/landscape/fantasy

too much stabilizer. on stuff like hair it is alright, but for body parts it makes them too stiff. grind gesture or just disable stabilizer

i kneel

there is a form to it. yes, it lowkey looks 3D. barely
>>7192188
very rough, but cute. i recc using pencil + ballpoint or ballpoint + dark sharpie combo to finalize the drawing after you finish sketch (like you have now)

Two questions:
1) You've been drawing for years now without making any progress or appealing pieces. Why do you think that is?
2) How will you remedy that in the most effective way?

Very true Pawell, i wish i knew how you put those gazillion logos and text all over your images and still make it read well enough,
cheers.

I'll keep practicing, this one here should be more readable.

>Composition
This one is truly a matter of "just drawing", looking for guides/teorical stuff you only get niggas giving you that golden ratio/Fibonacci shit, i hate those yee yee ass snail shells.

perhaps for multiple reasons, but most likely low(er) IQ and/or lack of experience with the exercise. though these disc-filled tubes actually look really good, so your spatial IQ seems high enough.

the more you do it, the less painful it will be. it will also be easier for people to give you proper critiques. in the grand scheme of things, I imagine you would agree posting it is the better thing to do.

do it a hundred times (not being facetious about that number, by the way) and I'm sure you'll be much more comfortable with the exercise. though obviously there's an implication of being focused when you do it and pushing yourself, not just drawing the same perspective and angle of tubes and discs each time.

1. you have been on the same level for years now, I think over a decade already.
2. you aren't in a good school nor you are a student. you are doing this as a hobby. It really doesnt look like you take it seriously enough, unless you think doing mindless doodles is somehow a form of study.

You broke her right leg. Her knee is facing forward while her foot is facing outside. Legs don't work like this.

You also pillow shaded her. I'd recommend printing the picture at something like 10-15% opacity 3-5 times and trying different shading over a new linework. Proper shading.

For all /beg/s who cant into anatomy:
Learn bony landmarks. Learn the skeleton (actually learn it, not just in one pose). Palpate bony landmarks on yourself and others (if they'll let you). Figure out how far some things are from others. This will help you with your proportions and overall anatomy.
