Can someone give me some pointers on how to add some character to my characters? I can draw a mannequin, I can draw a pose from imagination and then refine it with reference, I can do some basic shapes to define how the character is gonna look, but then when I want to add some detail and/or props I go completely blank.

You can start with a color palete, or do the twitter trend thing of making something abstract into a character. You can also draw yourself badly.

You have to actually want to create a character, when you're making a good character you aren't trying to make a 2D fuck doll or a brand avatar for your cringe pngtuber channel. You want to make someone that lives in a world and has a purpose. You don't just add detail because you think "alright time for detail", you add detail deliberately to convince the viewer that this is a living character that has a past and is rooted in a real world.

You should learn the fundamentals of basic visual language, shape silhouette economy of detail etc. But the character and world you want to make should be something that interests you and comes from you.

To add to that, form always follows function. Ask yourself what a character's purpose is and then design them accordingly. A miner wouldn't likely have a jetpack unless they were mining space rock, etc.

Still workin' on her design a bit for once her game is done.

She was formerly a bullied, geeky abused japanese teen (right black haired girl) that ended up involved in a Mirai Nikki like battle royale situation *TBD* where she uses her powers *TBD* to survive until the end of that, until the protagonist of that timeline saves her, making her see him as a kindred soul.

Upon being the last one standing (and obtaining several more powers such as time manip and changing her appearance, even to the point she can merge with stuff or even space Thanos style since she won the right of being the "vessel" of a higher dimensional goddess that uses her as entertainment), she takes the form of a rich european young model & learns english by absorbing and english knowing version of herself to be "the best version of herself" and make the world pay up for her abuse by passive aggresive force (such as making her bullies never have happy lives, becoming rich by lottery number guessing and stealing from people in time stop.)
In the "new world" she meets and pretty much Magic Pixie Dream Girls her way into making sure the protagonist also has powers to change the world.
Despite her new powers and fake bravado, she is still sweet in her own way also a geeky dork despite trying to be super cool, confident and a semi cocky "cool girl heroine".

So yeah her character arc is accepting herself thanks to the protagonist and stop hatin' herself alongside knowing that no matter how much she fucks others over, that there will always be some other bully or asshole out there no matter how much she "punishes" em

Oh her appearance change is meant to also change her body to her own ideal self, its not just the head. She has bigger boobs now

But yeah, her design is mostly her showing confidence and arrogance since she can pretty much win any fights if she wants.

Also, she can still be beaten in battle if tricked, as she only sees the future of what she wants to see. Aka, a fight. Then be surprised by a sudden attack from someone or something she didnt think was a factor.

Usually, the apron would hide where the skirt and shirt connect (meaning there'd be no black from the skirt showing) But I also understand that the white>black>white is more aesthetically pleasing than the white>white layering. But yeah, my animation project is called Future Faith, about angels and demons in the future and the character struggle of a young kid in the spiritual battle. The scope is small for now, as I'm too broke to do the version I wanna do but it'd be a waste to wait imo

This is going to be kind of a nothing answer, but I've never read a book on rendering in my life. I learn largely by internalising things visually and then trying to apply those lessons to the stuff I create. Next to value though, I think is a basic understanding of light physics is probably what's most essential factor when it comes to rendering though. Learn how light interfaces with physical mass and you can pretty much paint anything.

As for me though, my process pretty much looks like sketch>lineart>flats>render on each individual flat layer>merge them all when I get bored/inpatient>begin overpainting atop the lone merged layer. I don't know if you can see it in this wip I started a while ago, but I'm slowly working my way through rendering it, which is why the hands and sleeves are still largely blank.

You should definitely read Scott Robertson's How to Render though. I have a copy on my shelf, and if I'd ever bothered to actually read it I probably would have learned in 3 months what it took me years to internalise.

How do you make robes look interesting? All my characters are wearing robes because of the inspiration being the setting but their silhouettes’ all look the same.
