How do I shake off the feeling that I should be doing better?
For example; like most anons here I too have my own characters and make art of them. However it's starting to bother me that I'm doing a disservice drawing them so shittily and my fans just have to put up with it. Now it's worth noting nobody's said anything negative about my art (yet) but I still can't shake the feeling that something's not quite right and I should just buy commissions instead.

use references or something
it will always feel weird, because putting 4 arms on a human anatomy is weird
I think in your case you need to separate the arms a little bit, there is no way that shoulder can fit under that bicep and even if you want to go with this anatomy, the upper arm should react to it and rest on the lower shoulder
imo you should just lift goro's anatomy, you can notice his second set of arms is smaller which would make posing easier, broader shoulders could help too
idl what I'm talking about this is just my fec cents, btw your pic doesn't look bad apart from that shoulder overlap

What I kind of don't like about a lot of the Goro poses is they feel kind of tensed up or active.

I wanted something that's kind of relaxed. I found this pic that's got less of that, but even this one's kind of tensed up with how his arms are kind of sticking out.

It will help, but don’t force yourself to do it yet if it’s not fun. You might enjoy copying other artists more. At some point you’ll hit a wall doing that which will make things less fun and then you’ll be ready to study fundies and actually enjoy it because you’ll be ready to improve a lot at the things you struggled with.

NTA but personally, I want to draw my fanfics of the Owl House, because I'm a writer more than an artist, but no one reads fanfics. I can spend hours crafting up alternate religious beliefs or connecting the breadcrumbs of religious movements in the American Northeast into hints of the Demon Realm beyond it, but actually sitting down and drawing out the dream sequences of Space Bandit Luranja is like pulling fingernails. I can't sit my Autism/ADHD tard ass down to just draw the things, and when I do it just doesn't look right.

The black chick in pic related is one of them that's driving me up a wall. I've tried a bunch of different variances on upper left, (the only references the show actually provided of this Background character) and the one I circled seems the closest to what I want, but it's still frustrating how difficult getting her face 'right' has been. The one I circled I know already wasn't accounting for her cheeks so the mouth goes farther than it should, and yeah I probably should have just started with basic shapes and filled it out to get it right, but... well I don't really have an excuse, but these drawings are all weeks between each other, and between then I'm distracting myself with all sorts of things.

I wish she had more references to work with. I get why she doesn't, why what I'm trying to do is going in blind, but if she's gonna be the MC's best friend for a majority of the story I gotta get good at drawing her.

Thanks, I just wish that hunger was able to roll out to more consistent art production. I don't want to end up as the next Howie, and I have my tardout moments, I could easily be that dude, but I do have a lot of mental blocks with focusing on frustrating things, and not being able to make the characters I want, as the shifting living things in my head, is the most frustrating part of this.

I want to add some variance to make it clear these are distinct characters, but not so much that it breaks from the style of the show. I've seen it too often in people posting OCs where they're either sparkledog versions of established characters, or they're off in some way, like the eyes or the mouth. This IS a show full of different monster looking creatures without much rules, but it's a fine line you know? Doesn't help that the show never released any proper character design rules, pic related's helped but it's a fan creation doing the work backwards.

I think it's because cartoony styles are so much easier than drawing realistic heads, they just have so many subtle details that are hard to capture.

I hope I can master realistic heads someday, but today wasn't one of them as I over did a certain supplement and put myself in a semi anxious state (but even when my skill improvement wasn't lost despite some shakiness).

i forgot, I did these before hand too, though these look awful. I tried to go for bigger eyes while using reference, still looks horrid though.

Hey Pawell, you've only been figure drawing for a few months, right? Don't be too hard on yourself, this is just how it goes. I wish you had started figure drawing earlier though, because I feel like drawing the figure is where you "real" improvement really begins.

The thing that improved my figure drawing the MOST was doing the David Finch roadmap. If I were you, I'd start from the beginning, with John Buscema's book, doing little mannequin gestures every day, memorizing your anatomy and proportions, then eventually getting to the Bridgman routine. With your grindset focus, I'm sure you will make it through Bridgman. Dave's roadmap is literally the most efficient way to learn figure drawing and construction, in my opinion. You can swap out Bridgman with Morpho or Taco, if you want, but I wouldn't recommend it. Your work is already very curvy and wiggly, and I think you NEED Bridgman's hard edges to counterbalance your natural tendency.

After you finish Bridgman, watch David Finch's study streams and just study like that, for the rest of your art journey.

Good luck!

you'd be wasting your time going greyscale to color, because you'll need to separate and go over individual parts anyway, unless you're going for a super edgy stylized look where you just add a single color.
also, when edge separation isn't clean enough or you haven't used a black outline, you'll be spending more time on cleaning edges.
also, reflected light with f you up.
just start with color and things will work out

Set goals based on time rather than achievements. Like “study x for 30 mins a day” instead of “learn to draw x” and do it until you feel like you’ve learned something, then try something different if you want. You’ll learn something if you put in the time and will be able to break the overall goal down into smaller steps more easily.
>>7130676
I think you’d get more at your level by doing focused anatomy studies and then when doing copies of figures like this focus on getting the gesture/pose right. It’ll be easier to copy more accurately that way since you’ll learn to see both the overall flow and smaller details by doing so.

Not him but diminishing returns means that as you put more into something it gradually becomes more and more work to get any noticable improvement. Putting it another way, the first hour you make a ton of progress, the next hour you make less, less than that the next hour and so on and so on. In your case, hes saying that your not improving the art all that much at this point and you would get more out of starting another piece even if you put the same amount of effort in.

Using a grid will often become a crutch and will weaken your observation skills, so use it with caution. First attempt it without a grid, then use it to check where you went wrong, turn it off and fix your mistakes. This is so you can identify your mistakes and fix them, that's how you actually learn something. You may find you make the same kind of measuring mistake every time, like always making everything too long, so then you can deliberately practice that weakness.
There a lots of ways to measure without a grid too, having all of these in your tool belt is much better than having to rely on a grid.

You are not used to it, so it is exhausting. Try keeping up with it and it will become easier. Also breaking things down to simple shapes help. Also don't try to copy everything perfectly, but most important parts.

start small and simple. when you're picking out a ref or once you have one picked out, think about what you could study in 30 minutes (since that seems to be your limit right now). or, instead of trying to copy the whole thing, pick out a smaller chunk of the image that you can focus on. you can start bumping up the time once you get the hang of it.

Here's my first attempt at construction using forms (spheres, cylinders, cubes/prisms, etc.).

Is it really this simple to do? Video related.

Your are drawing the face from the easiest angle.

That's okay. Drawing the face is the hardest shit on the planet to draw. It filtered me and prevented me from drawing for years.

Please listen to me: I want you to trace 20 faces from different angles right now, and then reference them after you are done tracing.
