Honestly I just wish I could be more accepting of drawings that "look bad" or that are "cringe" as the kids say. Way too high standards and as a result extremely unrealistic expectations are the biggest hurdles for me as a prebeg right now. When I was way younger it was really fun to just doodle and draw random shitty anime-style drawings without caring much about perspective or construction or any fundamentals except some basic proportions really, but now I've become so critical and jaded, and all the fun has been sucked out. Is it something that can be reversed, an how? Or am I doomed to never enjoy drawing again?

Could we have a link?

Also, I have been going through a phase where I feel like no matter what I do my real life studies just don't look good at all.

I am still insecure about how messy the lines are...and I just realised something.

I am actually really really bored of drawing real people, and I would rather draw more cartoony/character I like. Yet I fear if i don't draw real people I won't progress as an artist.

If I didn't feel so bored and impatient, I would actually have created a much better looking study, but when I get impatient I can't really think clearly and the anatomy and everything looks off...

That being said, I feel I am getting the hang of drawing breasts in perspective.

Any advice? Should I just not worry about this for now and come back to it later once I feel more confident and get some other pictures out of my system?

Anon, doing head and figure studies are too hard for you right now
you're symbol drawing extremely hard, making everything flat. You're not feeling the form aka giving three-dimensionality to your drawing
I suggest going back to drawing simple forms like cylinders, spheres and cubes in 2d and 3d perspective. Once you get a hang of it, try combining the simple shapes into complex shapes.
I promise you if you stick to grinding simple forms with perspective in mind, you will improve much faster.

"MUH SYMBOL DRAWING"

I do draw cylinders and shapes all the time. Lemme guess, these are symbol drawings too? People use very loose definitions of what a symbol is (confusing perspective issues with symbol).

I assure you that the issue is I keep forgetting to construct them as cylinders and I frankly I see people able to draw figures without needing to painstakingly constructing them as cylinders before hand.

Seeing experienced artists' drawings is like a double-edged sword. You might be inspired and learn cool shape language, but you're not fully understanding the simplifications they do because they've internalized a lot of the groundwork behind it (like construction, placement of features in the face etc etc)

I recommend you break down poses into these basic 3D shapes to get better at seeing the perspective and form of human bodies since it’s one thing to be able to draw shapes in a void and another to be able to apply them to more complex things. People who don’t have to do that either started out with an exceptional visuospatial sense or they practiced this sort of thing until they got good at it. Try to visualize what orientation in 3D space each body part has and where it would go if the pose were exaggerated or the action continued. If you looked at it from the side what would it look like? Draw all that using basic shapes. The more you do this the better you’ll get at visualizing bodies as forms.

I think you're falling into the trap of starting with volumes, instead of accurate shapes. You're laying in the figure with a bean for the ribs, a bean for the hips, but all that's gonna do for you is make you put things in the wrong place.

Start instead, with only straight lines. Block in what you see very slowly and accurately. Check plumb lines (google them if you don't know what they are). Only once you're done with that step, do you lay in volumes on top

It's very important to separate out those 2 stages in drawing. Straight lines FIRST, then volumes. Do not do volumes and placement all at the same time.

NTA but could you elaborate on the proper way to do that? Or refer me to some source where I could read up more on this. Do I block in larger than the volumes are intended to be and then fit the volume into the blocked in form? Smaller and then add volume on top? Differs case by case?

Honestly, Proko's version of gesture is the closest to what I was talking about. His model of "gesture" isn't even really gesture, if you compare it to how Vilppu, Hampton, Mattesi do it. It's more like blocking in a figure with simple CSI lines. That's how I want you to approach it, basically. Anything to help you see more accurately.

Krenz also talks about blocking things in with straight lines, so if you have an aversion to Proko, refer to him

The ribcage can twist and turn a little bit. The shoulder can move a lot since they're not actually fused to the ribcage. And the collar bones move with the shoulders (they're connected (look up the shouldergirdle)), but are also anchored to the middle of the ribcage up at the pit of the neck. She seems to recline a little too, away from the camera.

Sternum should be connected to both clavicles and it shouldn't twist, it's a solid bone. And ribcage as a whole moves and twists together: sternum and ribs. Am I wrong? Her legs are still kinda stiff and scuffed. Look at the knee and tell me that is what its supposed to look like. Same problem with the arms too, Much more rigid/straight than your usual work. Theres also some weird shit happening with her trapezius muscles, thicker on one side than the other...Lighting scheme would be cool, but most of the shadow shapes/edges are too sloppy and inconsistently designed to look good. Its weird because you usually dont struggle with painting moreso drawing.

spend more time with the drawing. Draw at a slower pace so that you can analyze your decisions. Rushing is different from being fast. being fast is a byproduct of experience. A lot of people here draw with a line quality that is sperging out, making for a sloppy finish. Not saying that you shouldn't scribble ever because there are things I like in the hair(although it is difficult to tell what's going on, the process of interpreting chaos is fun to do) and proportions of the face, it reminds me of azumanga daioh. I don't actually mind getting criticism for what I draw. I mean I actually want it, but there needs to be more than it than "This element here looks off" as that doesn't really tell me enough to actually work with.

If the intention is to get me to just learn those things in general...it's still helpful to point out how to improve it as that'll actually help me get better at those specific things.

I really love the redline critiques as they really are illuminating and do help a lot. It's just the more vague critiques which aren't helpful and just feel annoying and lazy.

Anons trying to give you a starting point because all you've done is drawn a stickman. And I think you are kinda missing the part where I said I want more clear critiques rather than vague "Go back to drawing fundies" when I have been drawing shapes and shit for ages. Give me something more specific.

Should have just said that to begin with, far easier to figure out as Stickman is again, the most extreme form of symbol.

(Case in point, her feet are clearly apart with the perspective, with the angle looking down on her so her left foot (her left) is closer to us, with her right foot further away).

Your art is very good btw. I hope I can achieve that level eventually, and maybe in a few months I might be able to.

As I said, I like to experiment with more flat/cartoony art styles as that's a style I like, hence why there was a lack of form.

I feel her hoodie top has enough form, but her legs of course look flat by design. I actually struggled to get them to look cartoony while still semi anatomical enough.

Btw, got a critique for you. That kneepad thing on her right leg looks a tad off perspective wise. It shouldn't look larger than her left leg's knee pad.

2. identify landmarks such as the clavicles, potruding bones of the pelvis, etc

3. Always keep the direction of the forms in mind

your drawing is good, you seem to understand the basics already, but you need more practice in observation, for instance you drew her left leg shorter than the right one, it almost looks like the left foot is behind the right one in space.

Short figure drawings/gesture teaches you observation and makes you ignore details, thereby forcing you to understand and draw the most basic and most important things about a pose

Had the same idea some time ago. Studying anime girl anatomy and proportions from time to time might make the process more fun.Thats said I'd like to start from neutral full frontal poses. >> No.7098236

>>7098230
Drawing from imagination is for advanced artists or pros; don't worry about that; always use reference. When you want to try to draw something original, just change the reference pose up a little bit. But yes, gesture drawing is important, but the meme about fluidity and the rules behind it are retarded. All that counts is that you can draw the main aspects of what makes a pose a pose, like the orientation of the shoulders and pelvis and the proportions.

There are no rules to gesture or drawing; if you feel something isn't working, just try something else out. There is a reason why there are so many different tutorials on YouTube about this, because every advanced artist has created their own way of doing gesture or figure drawing, and they want to teach you their method because they think it's the best because it worked for them.

lol, that's one way of thinking of it. But it's not really SSS. Rather, it's a layer set up that takes colors to black while holding onto saturation and hue shifting "down". And on the inverse, another layer set up that takes colors to white, while holding on to saturation and hue shifting "up".
The results appear similar to SSS, so I can see why you said that.

I don't think the face does a good job at conveying what's happening exactly. Here, I made a new simplified example. And I made a post showing how to set up the layers here: >>>/gd/453550

The point in all this is really simple: shading with basic black or basic white normally looks ugly. But with this layer set up, you can take colors to black or white with a pleasant saturation and hue shift.

In fact, in my updated image: >>7098265 I actually deleted the midtone color, and relied on the shader to boost the shadows up to midtones. Probably not not good to put so much faith into the shader, but I was experimenting here, and wanted to see how far I could push it. Really, the best use case, is when you need true black/true white, and want it to actually blend into black/white in a pleasing way. If you try to do more with it than that, then you'll probably regret how bloated your layers become trying to manage it. So I only suggest using this to get deep black crevices and stark white highlights.

i’m at the point where i’m confident enough in my gestures and basic figures that i should sketch everyday, learn to animate, branch out to other exercises… but i don’t wanna :(

It's a painting, not a drawing, you doofus. People may spend literal days and weeks on paintings. 20 hours is on the lower end. Especially for a beg, who is not just painting, but figures out stuff as he goes. If you are not doing longer works, you are NGMI hard.

I'm really struggling with drawing poses from imagination especially if i try to construct them with boxes like the ones on the left as opposed to the ones on the right where i relied more on gesture and then added some structure afterwards.
I also struggle with hands and feet in general

It's very funny because I am indeed myself. You don't need to PYW. I don't want to see them anymore. All I wanted to say is that you don't need to learn every muscles' names like a nerd in order to draw them. It's just that simple.
I made these posts, and I think they are very polite. I don't know why you get so mad.
