Why You Should Copy Anime:

Naoki Saito: https://youtu.be/8jsZGeaWkhE?si=6HZIvG9Bx3y9qoHs&t=12

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Rounding out my 4th month of learning with an original drawing of a vtuber i've been watching recently

>> No.7092122

some parts of the linework could use better line confidence, like the boundary of the boob
it doesn't look like you understand the horizon line, if part of an object is sticking up above the horizon line that means it's vertically higher than the camera position. the camera is looking up at it.
the godrays are too subdued, looks like a texture on the tombstones instead of a mass of light
the shadow edges and directions don't look good, also the tombstones don't seem to have form shadows

do you have any videos that go more into detail about this?
as far as the godrays, i think i was too afraid of going more into them which i guess ended up hindering it

and as for the shadows, you're referring to how the color on the tombstones are just 1 uniform color instead of 1 side being slightly darker than the other?

it's possible to make them believable with 1 uniform color but you didn't choose the right ones imo
you could try reading about the basics of lighting/rendering, but it might be kind of challenging
the place where it fails in your picture is from comparing the light/shadow value behaviors of the ground vs the tombstones, something seems wrong about how dark the shadowed part of the ground gets compared to how the light/shadow relationship of the tombstones.

i do need to honestly, ive never tried studying lighting/renderinf/coloring so i had no real experience going into it

I think the biggest problem with the picture is that it tries to express bright light without implementing its properties. The most important things to make something look bright are high contrast and bloom effect. I will explain how i fixed this issue in 3 steps:
1. I applied a strong multiply layer over all thombstones, cast shadows and tree to make them darker. Then i made the character lighting more dramatic using a hardlight layer. Instead of the previous soft low contrast edges, i clearly sepparated dark and light planes and added a bit of ambient occlusion near the legs.
2. I added dark spots on the ground closer to the camera to make the back seem brighter. I also covered the whole sky with a bright orange screen layer using a soft brush, making sure to slightly overlap the back thombstones and tree. This is the bloom effect.
3. I added stronger god rays using a very low opacity brush on another screen layer. Slightly overlapping my brushstrokes to get a streaking effect.

Babylonians called it Sharru ("the King"), and it marked the 15th ecliptic constellation. In India it was known as Maghā ("the Mighty"), in Sogdiana Magh ("the Great"), in Persia Miyan ("the Centre") and also as Venant, one of the four 'royal stars' of the Persian monarchy.[42] It was one of the fifteen Behenian stars known to medieval astrologers, associated with granite, mugwort, and the kabbalistic symbol .

In the Babylonian MUL.APIN, Regulus is listed as Lugal, meaning king, with co-descriptor, "star of the Lion's breast"
A quadruple bypass heart surgery is performed when four blood vessels that feed the heart are blocked.
The shift to the cat also reflects a difference in cultural values. While the Year of the Rabbit is considered to be mild and peaceful, the cat symbolizes strength, power, and aggression. Another cultural explanation suggests the Vietnamese closely linked the mouse (rat) and rabbit, and didn’t want to observe two similar years.
Tu'er Shen (traditional Chinese: 兔兒神; simplified Chinese: 兔儿神; pinyin: Tùrshén, The Leveret Spirit) or Tu Shen (Chinese: 兔神; pinyin: Tùshén, The Rabbit God), is a Chinese deity who manages love and sex between men. His name literally means "rabbit deity". His adherents refer to him as Ta Yeh (traditional Chinese: 大爺; simplified Chinese: 大爷; pinyin: dàyé, The Master).[1]

Feels very... non-unified, like a mishmash of several contradicting elements thrown together. In terms of style, the face is very early 2000s moeblob anime face, but then the clothing and accessories look more like modern day wannabe-alt-fashion streetwear. Pick a style and stick to it.

The pose is stiff, and body language unclear. The soulless eyes and expressionless face aren't doing this any favors, either. Work on being more confident in your lines as well as being more deliberate with your mark-making.

The binary pen and heavy airbrush combo is another contradicting choice, especially when the color layer is over top of the linework (small areas where the airbrush bleeds over the lineart kind of defeats the purpose of a non anti-aliased brush). That combined with the lack of color theory and inconsistent light source makes the piece as a whole look very muddy and unclear.
Lastly, try working on a larger canvas size (one OTHER than 666...) to avoid that pixelated look on your drawings, and to make them an actually reasonable resolution since you can always scale them down.

How about anons I want to ask.
I'm studying Horikoshi's art and I want to ask you guys (even if you don't like his drawing style since it's a bit eccentric)
What makes you say "This is a Horikoshi style"
After studying it for a couple of months I made my notes
>He is very expressive with his hands
> The mouths are very large and their teeth are to some extent prominent (if you look closely you can even notice the gums)
> It has different types of eyes to communicate what the character is like (Redondos is good-natured, straight eyes for serious or evil characters and rectangular eyes for peculiar characters.
I really want to get Horikoshi's style

>> No.7097472

>>7092086
I'd say there are two major issues that scream "amateur" to me.
1. Boring linework. Weight variation is key, with the large, soft shapes you're using, much thicker weights overall are more appropriate. The chicken scratching is whatever, it can be a valid style, but cleaner lines are more typical of "high quality" pieces.
2. Dull colouring/shading. I'm not referring to the correctness, which also could use some work, but rather that you're only using two tones instead of at least three (shadow/midtone/highlight), and the lack of tinting makes the light source look pure white, which is boring. For a scene lit by daylight, you almost always want to make the highlights a warmer colour and the shadows a cooler colour (you can also tint the shadows to suggest indirect lighting from the environment).

-The upper elbow should be long enough to make it just a little past the thinnest part of the torso when the arms are down.

-As another anon said, raise the breasts. The upper sides of the breasts should start where the armpit ends. In yours, those points are at two different heights

-Make the pelvis wider. That will make there more of an 'hourglass figure.'

Eyes should be a bit farther apart.
Jaw should be lower/longer.
Ear should be lower.
Breasts should be larger, higher, and less droopy.
Deltoids should be more subtle.
Chin and cheek should jut out more.
Everything below the ribcage is hardly salvageable (sorry). I advise you get more references for the lower body.

You might be fatigued or what I like to call "art numb."
Many of these mistakes are obvious to outsiders, but for some reason you've become desensitized to them.
It doesn't look like this is caused by a lack of skill, but rather a mental block of sorts.
I advise you take a rest and look at this drawing with fresh eyes.

there's a lot of decisions that result in that image because it is intended to be 3D, but you aren't limited to making those same decisions if you translate it to 2D
add or change the folds in the cloth, the proportions of the body are off because they have to fit the hip in the skirt and not clip it when physics animates the skirt, the shadows are off sometimes because its based on real light physics but that doesn't apply to anime, some clothes parts aren't casting shadows onto other parts, the shape of the neck, shoulders, etc.

well I guess its not a good reference if you don't have an idea of what those things should look like
but if you want to draw it then just try it and learn through it

I would recommend against this. The placement of the eyes, nose, and mouth in different 2D views is often not consistent with a 3D model, and neither is the shading. 3D anime-style artists have to use a lot of tricks to replicate the 2D effect for those reasons. You could use it as a very rough guide, sure, but I feel like it would be a waste of time for how little benefit you can really get out of it. For the body, I guess it might help with proportion and foreshortening, but in the time it takes to pose the model, you could probably crank out several gesture drawings and pick the best one to build on top of.
