Study your fundies.
Also, make a list of all your favorite artists. Analyze each of them. Figure out what you really love about them and want to capture in your own work.
Also, you will never get that feeling you speak of, so don't chase it. The artist is barred from genuine enjoyment of their own work, that's the domain of the audience. You will get the joy of a job well done, nothing more.

Learn about the masses of the torso, and how the ribcage and pelvis has a tilt that comes from the spine as an S curve. Because of the tilt, this is where boxes come in play and how you use the box form to help you find an orientation in space. Once you establish this orientation (or at least be mindful of it) you may begin to draw the torso with the pelvis being proportionally larger than the ribcage, that is partly how we get the iconic hourglass shape. Knowing the bony landmarks of the torso will help you keep proportions in check such as the iliac crest, sternum, greater trochanter, clavicles, and how the belly button is placed just above the iliac crest from the pelvis as an example.

I've started doing some ms paint portraits to get more acquainted with facial planes and value use. Overall I'm happy with this one, the light is really cool coming from above and shining through her glasses back onto the skin. Overall, the blocks of color and value are there but how do I get to doing finer detailed rendering? Is it finally time to zoom in to my artwork? It was always drilled into me to paint as far away from the work as possible. Words of encouragement/advice appreciated.

Sick. And yes, zoom in for details. I believe it was Anthony Jones who said in a proko video something like "zoom out to draw big, zoom in to draw small".

Yes if you make digital art you need a drawing tablet or pen display. Displays are usually more expensive than the screenless tablets. Wacom is the most popular company to produce such peripherals but there are also competitors like xp pen and huion. if you're going screenless, look for something of decent size as small tablets tend to be harder to use for drawing. For drawing software i would recommend Krita which is free and works on all major desktop operating systems. For any tablet you choose, try to find a review of it first to avoid any problems.

Spend a week with a pirated version of each program people recommend and get what you like most, it's the only way to really know. Most people stick with what they try first and that's fine too.

Pen pressure isn’t as great as you believe you can work around it with good opacity setting and managing your layers.

KTD at no point asks for perfection. All the sample drawings are intentionally loose and sketchy and are never perfect copies. Pic related is the example shown in that section you're so worried about. As long as you get the idea across visually you're already succeeding. Don't take it so seriously, you're only on the first chapter. Let loose and read the self-critique section on pg 37, it tells you how to critique yourself more constructively. Those guns were really silly too. It's the only pistol EVER created that can be assembled faster than it can be reloaded, 32 seconds on average. They made half a million of these bad boys with only 300 workers over the course of six months.
They were meant to be airshipped in into occupied nations for the insurgents to use.
Optimial use case would be for an insurgent to magdump an enemy soldier, and steal their actually usable gear.
They were also meant to double as a psychological weapon cause every soldier of the occupant army would have to live in a constant fear of getting shot out of nowhere with a piece of scrap liberator pistol.

Hey they asked for critique

Whether they want to listen to it or not is up to them. If they don't think it's useful that's fine

When people ask for critique on here, they’re looking for at least an /int/ someone with a deeper understanding of an art skill than them, anatomy in this case, which absolutely is not you

they didn't specifically ask for anatomy

the way you rendered the knees looks flat and anappealing especially the linework on the left oone. I also think the lighting overall is kinda flat and incorrect, if there was a cast shadow on the ground like that there would be more form shadows on the body, dress and the arm on the left side

I keep having bad drawing day after bad drawing day bros, when does the slump end?

there's that saying right
>10 hours: familiar
>100 hours: proficient
>1000 hours: good
>10000 hours: expert

don't know how realistic that is

but I'm definitely not at that 100 hours mark yet. Maybe like 15 hours overall.

If he had not posted his work you probably wouldn't have replied.
There's no quality control here - It's up to the people asking for advice to filter critique and judge if it's actually useful or utter bullshit.
Even someone with no drawing skills can point out if something looks off.
