I have a phd in autistic bullshitting and I theorize that the reason why westerners aren't able to replicate asian styles has to do with language and in particular the written word. Growing up reading and writing gook squiggles increases one's visual IQ, and unless you're exposed to that style of writing from birth, you will never develop a keen enough eye for stylization to capture the anime style authentically. Anime is based on symbol, style and calligraphic finesse, westoids always over construct where there should be less construction, their symbol sense is stifled and they fail to comprehend the nuances. Westoids should stick to cape shit it's what they in their rigid, unfeeling unthinking default mode of operation are naturally inclined towards.

Thats not a theory, it's the truth. I realized this when I began drawing animu girls for fun. That calligraphy is very much intertwined with manga and anime as a whole.

Which is why I think artists who want to try that style of art should begin writing in Japanese before even starting. Learning how to do the funny squiggles should improve any animu art (imo).

It's fashion, the current generation sees anime/manga as cool and everything else as uncool. I do agree with them that a lot of contemporary western comics and cartoons are dogshit in style and content.
America has a rich history in comics and animation, but unfortunately post-Gen X is willfully ignorant of most of it or sees it as passé "boomer art" (even though the best is literally pre-boomer).

it's just modified disney, and anime styles have changed decade over decade and even within decades there is variety so if it were truly some quintessential Japanese self-expression it would be far more conservative in form, you'd never get things like Panty & Stocking or Fist of the North Star if anime were puritanically Japanese

I think "anime style" as a concept is one of those things that only entirely makes sense if you are Asian.
Something about their cultural tendency toward order and uniformity. Westerners will always try to put their own spin on something. It just happens without even being entirely conscious.

And sure, "not all anime looks the same", but there's still some kind of connective tissue there. We all know when we're looking at "anime", and we all know when we're looking at something Western that has anime influence, but there's that offness about it.

Stop trying to be Japanese anyway. it's cringe.

I would say:

-Over construction. Failure to stylize the face properly, always trying to make it follow the 'rules.'
-Bad line art. Lacking in calligraphic finesse, either too stiff or too loose. Doesn't hit that sweet spot.
-Facial expressions read as western / white rather than Japanese. Either they are too exaggerated and therefore gross / silly or are too plain and fail to capture nuance.
-Shadow tone in cel shading is often 'dead' feeling due to a lack of hue shifting. Westoids are scared of making big hue shifts in shadow because it violates the precious rules they repeat like a mantra in their heads at all times. Colors in general too muted and lacking in impact, fear of saturation due to years of westoid painter indoctrination at school and online.
-In NSFW stuff, a kind of grossness stemming from over detailing the body, resulting in an aged appearance. This is because westoids value anatomy knowledge above aesthetic appeal, and tend to include too many lines to indicate subtle anatomical traits that while technically correct, and visually muddy and unappealing.

Most problems with westoid work stem from a lack of grace.

Anime style is like calligraphy. Westoids look at Japanese calligraphy and think "yeah that looks easy," until they try it themselves and realize there's a realm of nuance to it that they were too blind to see until they themselves went down into the rice feilds.

This is why I hate pretentious art youtubers like Steven Zapata. He actively avoids the style, expresses hostility to it, and claims to be "above" it, like it's beneath his skill set. Yet when fans send him their anime drawings to critique, he melts alive on camera. The recent stream he did where he basically shat himself at the prospect of having to critique anime art and admitted to knowing nothing about it just proves that westoids have no appreciation even for generic weebshit.

Anime has power precisely because it's a careful distillation of beauty and symbolic ideals. Wanting to capture those ideals and that mechanism of sight is not an easy task. Since it is a stylistic tradition largely derived from Japanese culture, emulating it is different from learning how to draw from life. This is why there are so many 'recipe' books and strict rules to follow. Break or deviate from the framework, and it's not anime anymore, in the same way fucking up the direction of a brush stroke in calligraphy is objectively seen as an unforgivable mistake.

What is this question about? Are you asking if YOU can draw anime style, or if others can? If you are asking how you can copy a style, the first thing to do is abstract it and don't think of anything in "a style" in the sense most people mean. Take whatever you want to copy and break it down. Observe the design choices being made.

Benjamin Faure, a French animator, work in anime since 2018, there's also the American animator Manu Mercurial that work in anime since 2020 I guess.
Asian jeans is an old IC meme, all you need is to learn from Japanese animators, their way of drawing and animating is not quite the same as the way West draw and animate, but that have more to do with time constraints and culture than genetics.
Their pipeline is unique to their needs.

I’m still yet to see “anime-style” art over here that’s indistinguishable from authentic Japanese mangaka. Closest I’ve seen is a few Spanish artists like DarkLuxia, Bacun, and a few smaller ones, but none of them were American.
