What are interesting/clever art techniques used by manga/comic artists?

I will post some examples of what I mean

>making the background black to indicate thinking.

By drawing motion lines around a shocked face, you can communicate shock
and you can vary the intensity of the shock by drawing more or less motion lines
It's more effective than simply drawing a shocked face on a plain background

This next one is an interesting one.. and I'm not sure how best to describe it
But by drawing a "distorted" background.. it communicates a unique feel to the action
I'm not sure how to put it in words but you can probably tell by looking at the panels yourself

And a plain white background with lots of open space, and sometimes a delicate sound effect like a little tap or swoosh... this communicates a sort of
I suppose I could word it as a comic panel "sigh"
the intensity of the action drops, and the atmosphere becomes lighter

Contrast with it's opposite, a very heavy atmosphere, which can be communicated with a darker tone, a higher contrast, not as much open space, and very intense sound effects of heavy noise.

Things moving very fast can be communicated with excessive speed lines, sometimes breaking into the drawing of the character itself... this one is well known

And finally, here is a showcase of impact panels... not sure how best to describe the key elements of this.. but here are some impact panels I collaged together

I also collaged together a series of noses because I feel the common preconception is that manga artist don't know how to draw noses.

Here is a collage of various anime faces to show the various ways the proportions and shapes of the face can be altered

This is as far as I've got.
I would like to look into the various uses of the kinds of common panel structures such as pic related, to see what kind of effect they have on a panel.

If anyone has anything interesting to contribute please share it.

interesting thread OP, it's always useful to learn to observe what other artists are doing for yourself, rather than relying on teaching resources that break things down for you.
