20 minutes

why is art like this? Why doesn't more work = better art?

does anyone have that image where an anon sketched a lupin with a red coat and asked why his colors sucked so bad, but then another anon redrew his art with the same colors, but made it way more dynamic? I think this might've been back in 2020-2021, but I can't find it on warosu and didn't have it saved.

anyways, finishing doesn't matter, only basic shapes does.

I agree, I think composition and shape is everything. To the point that construction doesn't matter. construction is largely just a cheatsheet for shape, but its like memorizing times tables instead of how to multiply by hand.

kek I found it

The basic drawing is all the matters in making a drawing good. details and colors and shit like that don't matter

i agree with this. People forget there are differing levels of construction. The first, and most low resolution level of construction is the shape / contour / flow. After that, it's the corners, then the cross contours, then the rendering. You go from higher order thinking towards the details, so in a way, shape is more important than construction

this shows how there are only a finite number of good drawings but infinite "Bad" drawings. What if he wants the first to be pointing down? And for both legs to be out? The solution to fixing bad art is often just "draw something else" but it took longer to draw left than it did right.

>learn to draw before learn to color
Great advice, but I don't blame him. Kids are given coloring books before they are given Loomis.
We truly have failed the children

it does if the artist is good

sunken cost fallacy,
you tunnel vision so hard that you want to finish it, even if it sucks and you should have either given up or started over 9 hours ago.
wheres if your sketch sucks ass, you just move on. and if it turn out well it's a pleasant surprise

also remember to flip your canvas regularly.

I'm affected by this so hard, even self-awareness doesn't help. Today I drew with time and efficiency in mind. I gave myself an hour for a finished and cleaned-up sketch. I hyper-fixated so much on getting the head and face right that I spend over 3 hours on just the fucking head. I honestly felt like crying and breaking my tablet like a toddler. Went to sleep for 3 hours and here we are. I'm just gonna restart the entire thing after getting some practice with speed by grinding a couple of references. Why can the art process be so beautiful and rewarding yet be full of suffering and misery at the same time?
