Beg here. I am following the Brent Eviston figure drawing course and I am currently up to centre lines.

The problem I still have with gesture is how to start. Eviston strongly suggests a primary action line, but I'm not sure I can get my head around it. Do you guys start with one or do you employ other methods?

is "just draw what you see" not just a very obvious meme? If that were really what were being learned then someone studying and drawing trees for years would expect to effortlessly jump to portraits. Studying anatomy would be obviously irrelevant as well. Clearly, the specific subject you want to draw needs to be studied, not some kind of "sight." I'm in the process of picking up an Intuos 3, and I'll soon start to practice on my art.
I'm looking to do art in the style in pic related, should I do anything special or just like, learn to draw more realistic stuff before I stylize things?
I have the books Keys to Drawing and
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Aren't there like starting exercises where you're supposed to basically freehand trace lineart that you have flipped upside down? Anyone who knows where to get lineart that is good for this purpose?

Page two of my combined master study of Kentaro Miura and Japanese language learning project. I have attempted to copy all the kanji in the story so far (almost all of them after the table of contents are on the page with this drawing of Puck.) Now I will attempt to look up every kanji and see what it means. This is kinda hard as the print isn't that great and the kanji are hard to read.
This is a really slow process, but it works for me. The drawing gives me a break from the language studies, and the intensity of learning Japanese makes drawing seem much more easy and fun.

I am a complete failure at art, been trying on and off for a while now (haven't reached a 100 drawings yet) and I was wondering if copying that Micheal Hampton book would help me improve my art and actually allow me to create nice looking images of models and characters that I like (mainly models to be honest).
Is it worth the time investment? I am a pretty slow person, so 3-4 copies will probably take me two days/sessions and I'm planing on copying the whole book. I also don't quite understand the theory so I was hoping that actually drawing it would help me fill that knowledge gap.

i think it's fine to start on charcoal but it might take you a while to figure out what techniques you can use with it, maybe try looking at some live drawing videos and see what kind of marks people are able to make. those wide strokes with the flat side of the charcoal are really handy.

1. The centerline of yours is too far to the left, so it doesn't look like it's coming out of the right spot
2. The angle is too extreme. The neck is angled back a bit, but not as much as you drew it
I'm not perfect at drawing necks but here's my attempt at a redline (cyanline?)

sorry, I missed your last post.
>how do I know when to draw a bit of the nose ridge at some angles
It's a stylistic choice for most people. I know some people who do a dot for the nose and don't draw the actual nasal ridge but it's implied to be there, and this is conveyed by making the farther eye look shorter horizontally.
The area around the eyes is concave so it's difficult to express the part that is hidden by the nose ridge, I tried my best in outlining this in my drawing if it makes sense. The artist in the rightmost infographic does a good job explaining it, you can see it here: https://twitter.com/cyjalway/status/1741162078101176782

you're over rendering the eyes and neglecting the rest of the portrait. the nose bridge doesn't connect with the nose, what is happening depth wise in the middle and edges? same with the cheeks. there's no depth there at all save for a few highlights. think about how the planes of the cheek connect to the nose, under eye, jaw, etc. same for the rest of the face. leaving those featureless areas grey makes it look flat. another huge thing is the hair - there is no depth because your values don't contrast enough. think of the hair in chunks of locks and render those whilst considering the light angle. also i would personally move away from the lineart if you're rendering and allow the painting to define it's edges without lines.

That's fine. I mentioned it's a stylistic choice, because people can get by with a lot of different approaches to it and still look fine. Here's a quick doodle as example to what I said, the left one I just had the small triangle to indicate the underside of the nose, and no bridge. You can still kinda tell the bridge is there even though I didn't draw it. I personally prefer the right one.
You don't have to worry too much about it right now, just have fun with your drawings. Look into your favorite artists and how they draw their noses!

Looks quite nice. I think her right (on our left) collarbone looks wrong since it’s not going to her shoulder and seems more like it’s pointing to her mid trap. I think we’d also be looking down on it more.

I think the shadow on her right (our left) armpit looks a little odd in its shape, and the color looks kinda funny, kinda gray compared to the shading on her sternum.

I think the shadow terminator/core shadow on her left (our right) breast maybe could bulge a little on the puffy nipple part of her top, like you did with the other breast. As it is now, the terminator kind of ignores the little bulge of titty meat in her bikini and seems like one continuous core shadow for her breast as if it were a uniform round surface. Or maybe the terminator on the bikini is fine, but it needs to conform to the main part of her breast differently. Idk. It’s very subtle and probably not worth fixing.

I think you’re definitely improving, and this is a difficult perspective. The rendering and skindentation on her breasts is great, and activates the fuck out of my neurons despite me being a diehard ass man. Good stuff, anon.

I don't understand drawing. I just don't understand anything about drawing. How do you learn? How do you study from books? D you just find an artist you like and copy their work? draw more faggot stop being HOMOSEXUAL and draw cool shit you like
if it looks bad ask for help from big boys and then copy what they do
basically you'll be drawing while looking at stuff whether it be IRL, good artists or teachers corrections of your shit.
this is because you cant draw something from imagination very well if you've never drawn it before.
What this means is that if you want to learn how to do art, you need to be making a lot of finished products. The reason why everybody has their own method is because everybody is retarded in a different way, so you have to experiment with what works and doesn't by continuously testing your constructions and studies in actual work
Even if you get it right once, you'll need to get the drawing right 2 or 3 times before you can consistently freeball a particular angle and pose without ref. Once you do this for enough years, you can bullshit stuff you like

Hello, I haven't drawn in a long time and was wondering if anyone had any advice for this drawing?

These are the things I feel are off, but can't put my finger on:
The shape of the face on the left girl.
The left girls right hand (the one she is resting her face on).
How the clothing is laying onto the seat, how the dress and skirt fall/drape over it.
The frills peaking out of the left girls dress, especially (our) right side.

Any help appreciated!

>How do you study from books?
Depends on the book, sometimes they have exercises to do, sometimes you're just just copying the drawings in them.

>Do you just find an artist you like and copy their work?
Yes, this is one thing you can do

>Do you draw from life and apply what you read in books?
Yes this is another thing you can do

>It seems like everyone has a different method and I just don't get it.
Drawing like all skills, is not linear nor is it simple. There are many aspects to it that require different methods of training/practice and someone's skill at "drawing" is just the cumulation of their skill at these many aspects

>Drawing gives me anxiety because I don't get it.
Drawing is actually fairly simple, it's just making marks on a surface to produce an image. Studying from books/copying artists you like/studying from life/etc these are all things you can do to get better at making marks on a page, they're just various methods of training. The same way there's several ways to exercise a certain muscle, there's several ways to get better at drawing.

All it is is drawing, seeing what you're not good at, working on that aspect in whichever way you enjoy, then drawing again, you just do this over and over and over.

Now I’m doing figure drawings and copying Bridgman, then gonna do dynamic sketching. Haven’t decided who I want to adopt as an art parent yet, but when I do, I’ll also do studies of their art. Step zero for learning how to draw is to learn observation. Until you can draw what you actually see instead of what your brain thinks it sees, you’ll be filtered by everything and you will never be able to learn anything.

Another shitpile for tonight. This time a draft for a delivery referenced (read: plagiarized) from a beautiful artwork I saw here in /ic/ a long time ago.
If you want to critique it then go ahead. I can't defend it at all.

drew some characters I like

I'm starting to use the right side of my brain more when drawing I think. I think less in words and body parts and more in lines.

How do i learn how to draw heads and faces better? I have been reading fun with a pencil but i dont understand how the guy places circles seemingly at random and then makes a nice face. Is there a some guide or something that explains how the skull affects the face in a different way or is my learning method wrong? I know the basic way of how to construct a face but stuff like cheeks and similar things seem kinda harder.

I've been practicing for a few weeks.
Still looks like shit, but at least I feel slightly more satisfied with each new drawing.

not sure if this is the thread to ask but what program has ease-of-use color grading?

i'm tempted to think photoshop but wondering if there are other programs that can do color grading unlike how AAnimate does.
