I still think he has a beeg nose, but your rendering is really nice to look at. The little details of definition here and there sell a nice illusion of depth, and you did a good job with the global illumination to add additional volume.
I know you said you just winged your rendering, but I think you're selling yourself short, and I'd like to ask again if you have any insight into your technique. Even something as simple as preferred layer modes or layering techniques would help us lesser beings immensely.

Regardless, congrats on a finished piece!

thanks.

here are some notes i've made during my rendering journey:

The most important thing in rendering is value. Your color pallet can be extremely appealing but if your values are crap, your shapes will make no sense and your image will break down.
>what does it mean for your values to be crap
your values are crap when the values on the light and dark side of the object get too close to each other. this makes the shapes hard to distinguish and just makes the image unreadable. you have to really be mindful of how dark your lights get and how light your darks get. I would start with greyscale drawings to practice value, as adding color can really complicate things.

As far as color goes, color is still kind of a mystery to me. I'm bad at picking colors, but here's something that I've kind of learned about colored lighting: when i'm shading an object of one color being lit by a light of another color, I draw a line from the color of the object that i'm shading to the color of the light that's shining, and then based on the intensity of the light, the apparent color of the object under that light is somewhere on that line. i then adjust to make sure the values make sense. I don't know if that is 100% accurate, but it does work and seems to line up with what some books i've read have illustrated (James Gurney). (see pic)

>>7038895
as far as my workflow goes:
- start with two flat colors to define your larger shapes. the color should be far enough apart in value that you work in some details in your midtones.
- start filling in your midtones. this is a lot of blending for me, but it could be different depending on how you want to render. During the process of filling in your midtones, you have to make sure that your midtones values do not obscure the overall shapes that you defined in the previous step. basically, all the values on the light side needs to be sufficiently far away from the values on the dark side.
- Also in the midtones is where you want to add texture.
- then you want to add secondary light (or fill light, or ambient light or bounce light) to the darker side. the color of the ambient light usually depends on the sky (if outside) or the objects in the room, or whatever secondary light source is available. Again be really mindful of how bright you make this secondary light source. you want a little bit of light to indicate some form, but not too much light that it starts obscure your shapes.
- then i'll go in and add some hue variance. basically you just want to add a small amount of color shift in your shapes just to keep things kind of interesting. still be mindful of your values.
- lastly i fill in the highlights. the highlights depend on how shiny or diffuse the object is. highlights will also indicate texture. don't go overboard with the highlights though because then it affects your main lighting.

Some things about textures. I've noticed that shiny, metallic objects have a very slow, gradual change in value as you move towards the light, then abruptly get bright and then abruptly get dark again and gradually get darker as you move away from the light. Reflective objects have a very sharp transition from the light to the dark side and the reflected light in the dark side is noticeably brighter.

that's pretty much it. i'm just trying to get more efficient at this

>I still don't understand how to draw digitigrade legs.
Don't think too hard about it. Construction is the same as human legs, just some parts are different lengths. You're combining the feet and foreleg; shorten the calf a bit, elongate the foot, try using some more extreme curves (following the same general shape as human legs) to exaggerate the shape, and distinguish each shape.

Do some exercises using some dog or horse leg references and it will make sense in no time. You can also heavily stylize digi legs. Pay attention to the kind of shapes in pic related. You only need to learn a few variations to be able to draw stylized legs in all sorts of scenarios. It's all about the shapes.

excuse the shitty edit. I'm trying to illustrate that if you try to draw a standard canine leg using a horses leg as a reference (via slapping the digitigrade foot onto an unguligrade leg), you're probably going to end up with something like this.

Oh, well that's not what I would intuitively do if someone told me to use a horse's leg as reference for digi. I would simply replace the hoof with toes at the fetlock. In your diagram, you're adding an extra set of toes essentially, but if you pay attention to what parts are analogous to the others, you won't have that issue. As long as you understand that the long part is the "foot", it's pretty easy to sus out.

Anyways, it's not a big deal. My advice was to learn the basic separation of upper leg, foreleg, and foot, and just pay attention to how the shapes differ. He's drawing Pokemon, not detailed anatomical studies. It's probably better to study other artists and stuff like Warner Bros. cartoons.

copy study of favorite artist.
https://files.catbox.moe/slflo0.png

I'm wondering if these copy studies are really helping me or if I need to start doing things on my own 100%. I've been using a lot of his art as reference and it's been great for completing pieces and understanding a bit on how things are drawn, but doing things on my own is where I start having issues. Q: Is it better to learn by copying from an anatomy book or by copying from a favorite artist? Or neither?

>> No.7047474

>>7047407
when you're looking to stylize, copying or referencing from other artists is great but you need to do some anatomy studies as well so you can recognize what does and doesn't look right. Drawing from imagination is also important to make sure you're actually learning from what you study, just make sure to do a good mix of both
