Haven't drawn in years, never actually read any books or guides, never posted for critique, and never actually improved. I think I just puke up things. I want to actually improve but I think I'm too retarded, and I also get carried away and never actually pay attention to the technical side of things. Also, I don't think I can actually draw without reference, if I do it ends up looking like psychotic scribbles.

I'm new to using a graphics tablet

I drew this in Krita, I found that Paint.net's smoothing was too weak. I cranked up the stabilizer on Krita, is that something I should try to move away from? I find my lines get pretty jittery and jagged without it, but also when I use the stabilizer it kind of feels like what I draw on the screen is a little bit off

Why do textured brushes make it easier?

>> No.7028646

>>7028638
>shit, that was one of the reasons I got the tablet
start without variable brush size get comfortable making lines first, later you can play around with the size curve most of the time you don't really need that extreme of a line variation.

>Why do textured brushes make it easier?
just like IRL making two strokes overlap is easier with a pencil than a fineliner due to the texture helps to hide that overlap. the combination of texture+antialiasing makes drawing more manageable. With practice you will have the muscle memory to work with any brush you like.

The problem is that you said you were not interested in what you were studying... so seek things you're interested in. It doesn't matter if it's an image or if it's from life. Of course from life the brain is able to grasp 3D better but in essence it's the same. What matters most is that you keep interest high.

Check out "Scott Robertson How to Draw" and go one step at a time. If your goal is to draw mech stuff then you definitelly have to put perspective as the thing that rules everything you do. So do that and the more you ingrain it the more stuff you'll find to do.

I'm scared to draw.

I haven't finished the sticky because I can't force myself through the paragraphs without immediately jumping down the page or getting pulled away by all sorts of bullshit.

I've bought Bridgman, Loomis, Keys to Drawing, Drawing from the Right Side, a 1300 dollar Cintiq, sketchpads and pencil sharpeners like Proko said, and I touch none of it. Furthest I've gotten is Keys to Drawing, I got to the foot exercise, couldn't find a position to sit and draw my feet in, got mad and I haven't touched it in days.

I can't PYW because I don't have any W to post. I have some, but the more I post at how nothing's happening, the more people are gonna notice it's me and throw up walls at me like Howie and I'm just going to be another meme so I'm scared to even ask for help.

I don't know what to do or where to focus, what to practice or how much time I should spend just drawing the cartoons I want to, and how to forgive myself for it not looking like I want it to. I'm just a big fucking schizo and I hate it. I hate being so broken and dumb and inactive and overthinky and I can't TALK to anyone about it.

What do I do? How do I untangle all this? Should I just ditch all the craft and practice and get into drawing at all daily? I tried that, but I just hated the way it looked, but I can't ask YOU guys how to fix that because it'd either be too broad and vague or I'd have to be specific and then you'd remember me and I'd be a big meme if I'm not already. I'm scared to post, scared to draw, scared to fail my goals and I will if I can't get myself back together but I don't know who or what's the right questions to ask.

What the fuck do I do? I can't just quit, I locked myself into a several thousand dollar investment, and I don't want to give up, not really. I just want to give up when I'm actually trying, because I don't feel like anything I try is making a difference.

No one reads fanfics of a visual medium. Not just for the priors of trashy material, no one has time to unpack writing instead of just looking at art. If I want to ever express this in a sharable way that people can and will choose to enjoy, I have to learn art. The generals for this show are aware I’m a crazy schizo, I’m not going to be able to pay someone else to make this. If I’m ever going to make people care about all the ideas I have, I HAVE to draw them. Just keep practicing. It took me almost a month to master freehand circles/ellipses by drawing them for 3 hours straight a day and filling up sketchbooks full of them, its pure muscle memory. You don't need to go to the same extremes since I'm a perfection obsessed autist, but it does take a while to get comfortable with circles and ellipses, they're tricky to learn. You use them to draw circles, cylinders, spheres etc. in perspective. Learning them will also make drawing curves easier. Take your sweet time, no one is holding a gun to your head.

This is the third and latest picture I ever drew. I know there's a lot to improve but what I want to know, is the perspective right? Did I manage to make the Goblin in a poncho and fox look 3d, if that's the right way to say it? Also in the background does the distant forest blend together with the grassy field and does the sense of distance look right? I'm trying to improve on one thing at a time so I don't get overwhelmed but any critique would be appreciated.

It's cute. Tree is flat, it needs values. Highlights in general would add more form (or 3D as you put it). Also there is no forest, just grass and more grass behind it. Try a tighter composition, it feels very empty and the objects in the distance feel out of place.
Keep it up, this bleeds soul.

I wasn't thinking too much about the background. I thought a mountain would look cool but after looking at it for a bit, it was very out of place and looked off. I changed the background so it looks like a forest at night and added a layer of cloth behind the Goblin to make his poncho a little less flat.

I tried to make the tree a little less flat but I feel retarded, I can't do it. So I guess I will be done with this piece, learn from it and I will go grind some fauna and highlights.

If keys to drawing didn’t click, just do Betty Edwards. If that doesn’t click, just do Proko’s beg course. Actually, if you’re retarded enough that working through a book is too self-directed for you to handle, just skip to Proko’s course. A course to work through is probably better for you right now than a book. Because it’s a regimented thing that treats you like a dumb baby (because in art terms we ARE still just dumb babies when starting out) and holds your hand every step of the way. And if Proko’s course somehow isn’t autistic enough, then do DrawABox until lesson 4.

TLDR: do Proko’s basics course. I recommend you buy it. It’ll be easier than trying to pirate it and it will help hold you accountable and the actual website will be better at coddling you.

I understand what you want to achieve, and now I can tell you what to do, if you want Studio Mir style, you will have to trace. You might think trace over what? Over your art, this is the secret that most Japanese artists share openly but somehow fallen on deaf ears. To gain extremely clean and beautiful lines, you have to redraw overdone drawings. This means the line-art process is probably more than twice, you are re-drawing, shaping it again and again on top of your original drawing, how many times? Until it feels right. Now, instead of jumping straight into character design, do an apple. Draw an apple, lower the opacity of the apple sketch, and draw on top again, until you get the organic shapes of the apple that you like. When you find out what you really like, the line art will show. Good luck!

Hello, I've been drawing "seriously" for ten years now, and this is my level. I've seen about as much advancement in a decade as some people see in a year. The last couple years, I really enjoyed drawing, and could do it for hours on end. But lately I've been feeling extremely demoralized at my lack of improvement, and I struggle to even open Krita, let alone draw more than a single figure.

This is some of my better comic work, and the figures took way longer than they should have. I practically had to trace the two on the far bottom right to get the proportions correct. Been feeling like absolute shit about my art this whole past month.

How do I get past this roadblock? How can I start improving at a reasonable rate? How do I draw faces more consistently/recognizably? How do I get cleaner lines? How do I add better structure without sacrificing gesture and form? Any other problems that stand out? Please help.

with whatever you feel comfortable with, I use a simple drawing compass (without the metal neddle), other people use 2 pens like chopsticks, others a ruler or even their fingers. But the main goal is the same getting the proportions and placement right, it isnt to have exact copy. Overtime you will just wing it (hopefully).

The opposite actually. This thread was only made yesterday, threads used to last up to three days. it's why the threads are taking longer to make, the guy who makes the edited thumbnails would usually have more time to make them.

Did an experiment with direct line art rather than doing any under drawing or construction

Nice studies. It’s interesting how expressively you drew the breasts and with such apparent ease, too. The hands are great, and your pecs are improved over the last attempt, good job. >>7029984
I think it’s super cute. The dress is perhaps a little bit poofy around her waist, but maybe not. Anon might have a point about the top being a little busy. You could consolidate some of the folds like he said, and maybe get rid of some of the wrinkles around the buttons, and just do a couple to imply there are wrinkles there and let the viewer’s mind fill in the rest. I think going with a medium complexity in her shirt might be neat, and the drawing would go from simple to medium to busy from her skirt to top to hair.

That foot in the middle is superb and the line work is great too

Reads female. A bit stocky, might want to bring her shoulders in or narrow her ribcage a little because by the time you add the flesh of her arms, her shoulders may be slightly broad. But she could just be a stocky dwarven peasant lass.

Yeah, just keep going. These look decent. You just need mileage imo. You’re beginning to get Emma’s likeness with the orange figure, good job. >>7030478
Interesting, you draw far better than you render. Your lines are near /pro/, imo. Try looking at some reference of nicely rendered boobs and tummies, also remember the pubic mound. I think the colors are good, but it’s the values where it falls a little flat. Maybe do a grayscale version or just convert it to grayscale so you can check the values. It might just be this drawing though, because I’ve seen you do better before, iirc

Looks weird, I like it. Compositionally, I think you should have some darkness framing the figure, like a darker atmosphere. Very cool tho

Havent drawn in years, drew raditz. I've never coloured digitally before, or in general really. What do you think and what should I do differently? I wanted it to look like a real frame from the show. If you squint atleast.

Appreciate the feedback, Im not too familiar with painting risque stuff so this was an interesting experience, its not perfect but I liked it. About the rendering, I'm not really sure in what I wanna strive towards so I pretty much experiment in every drawing. Weird you dont like the values, also I always check my values in grayscale as I render.

Removed most of the button wrinkles and added more details around the skirt to draw the eyes away from the torso. Probably going to redo the hair to use bigger shapes instead of individual strands as well. Thank you for the feedback.

Some things I was trying to do in this piece:

1. Hatching is getting better, but I'm still not sure if I'm spacing the lines far or close enough.

2. I'm making my own texture brushes, and I used one of them in the background. I know I didn't cover the outlines with the texture brush well. I don't know if the character in the work should also have texture as well.

3. This work is supposed to be monochromatic, with the value being rendered using hatching. I don't know if this is a good combination for the aesthetic appeal of this work.

4. The leaves on the background don't really look like leaves in my opinion, even though the contour shape of those leaves are correct. Maybe I'll add the veins and sticks of the leaves next time to make them look more obvious.
