opinions on how to improve my coloring so that things like clothes look better.
Also kind of unrelated: I know a bunch of japanese artists manage to make these super detailed lineart with those very small lines.
How do they go about it?

what's the goal in two minute sketches? just general construction? looking at this i can tell i'm still bad at understanding the hip box, rib cage thing (i feel like i am anyway -- will's "three fingered gap" makes me scratch my head)

Finally finished aigis. Learned a lot, thanks to the anons who provided redlines helped me out a lot.

There's probably a lot of perspective issues with it, mechanical detail is hard. but I'm happy with it. Already spent a lot of time on this so gonna work on the next one.

you need to look at images of clothes in a similar position , the light will have clear edges and follow the wrinkles of the fabric (stop blending lights and shadows and youll be forced to improve)

also you need a clear idea about what the light source is (if you dont already)

change the background to a colour too help make it look like a proper composition and not a floating character

7025556

Any feedback before I keep going with this one? both composition and anatomy would help. I plan on making the background pretty dark with the only source of light being the corner with butterflies. will probably add more hands later

Also, is it worth it going on a autistic hunt for more brushes? I don't know, I don't really like the way my lines look right now, but I feel like it's probably I'm just lacking that confidence. i'm just using one of the brushes in Kyle's manga pack

>>7025489
Your shapes and upper body anatomy are good, I really like the hand on her glasses. The other hand is a mystery to me. Gesture’s not bad, torso’s a little stiff. Practice rendering basic volumes and understanding how light (or modeling tone) works to depict form would help you a lot. Also do more full body poses and/or study hips and thighs and how they connect to the torso. Overall not bad, anon
>>7025516
Do more dynamic full body poses with your signature face style. I think the combo of more realistic bodies with your googley eyes would be fucking kino. You’ve probably done enough straight-on busts and portraits to last you a lifetime. Your faces are among my favorite, and I think you’re limiting your potential by trying to make them generic anime thots. Or, if you can figure out a combo of your googley-eye facial features on a more traditional anime head/face/skull shape, I think you’ll majorly level up.
>>7025530
These look fine. IMO 5m+ is better for us begs. The 3-finger gap is just pointing out that the leg starts a little below the iliac crest. Imagine a pair of panties. If the waistband is at the iliac crest/ASIS, the leg hole is a bit below that. That’s where the leg starts, where the crease forms when you lift your leg. Down at the leg hole, not up at the waistband/iliac crest/ASIS. That’s all the 3-finger gap is
>>7025537
Looks fucking baller. Study heads and you’re mid int

Yeah, that was me. I don't remember, in the answer you gave, you saying you've actually attempted to train observation seriously. Have you actually gone through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain? Or Keys to Drawing? I remember you saying that because of ergonomics and RSI and funds, you have to use that setup and it's not very clear for you to see stuff on. But I don't think that's a good enough reason to avoid improving your accuracy. If your monitor is okay enough to read on, it's okay enough to practice observational drawing. Maybe turn the light in the room down for reduced glare. Or even put a piece of paper over your tablet there, and use a pencil.

My brother in Christ, you haven't learned to see yet and it's really the only thing holding you back. Doing studies of Hampton and Morpho can't help you until you can accurately see what you're studying. Accuracy is step zero. You may or may not eventually get there by beating your head against the wall for years, but it's so much faster and easier to just work through a book or course that teaches it. It's almost like flipping a "seeing switch" where once you see it, you can't unsee it. I strongly recommend you work through either Betty Edwards's book, Keys to Drawing, Eviston's beg book/course, or Proko's basics course.

Am I really that far off for having drawn for only 1 year and 3 months (start date: Oct 19th 2023)? For all the criticism I’ve gotten, it’s like everybody expects me to be pro already! doesn't make any sense. The only 2D thing about your and their drawings is that they're on paper. Those hands are drawn living in a 3D space with the use of form, mimicking real life. So don't think of your drawings as 2D and instead try to interpret them as 3D shapes living in a 3D plane, breaking them down into simpler shapes like this guy shows >>7026005

when I get furious then depressed at my level of skill I try and remind myself that me being able to notice everything wrong is actually good because it means my eye has gotten better at noticing flaws which means I learned something.
also, remember that design>correct

alot of times what makes something look good is not because of how "correct" everything looks, but how it is designed.

thats why I would ignore retards saying you should study from stylized drawings

Ah, okay. I see now. I misunderstood what you were doing. I thought you were drawing from reference, not from imagination.

You need to be drawing predominantly from reference. Do a bunch of figures from reference and then a couple from imagination if you want. like 80/20, I'd say. You've gotta build a visual library by drawing something from reference a LOT before you can reliably draw that thing from imagination. I also noticed that in your imagination drawings you're leaping right into construction. Especially when inventing, you should start with a gesture, then check for proportions, then block in the main masses and construct the body. Then you can add anatomy on top of the mannequin if you want.

Your observation isn't terrible, so you probably don't really need to do Betty Edwards or anything. What you do need to do is use reference.

If you really want to train your imagination muscle, draw from reference, then hide the ref and your drawing and draw it from memory. Then draw the same thing from reference again, comparing it to your memory drawing. Then hide all that again and redraw it from memory again. Finally, compare it to the ref and possibly draw it from reference one last time. That is exhausting and will use up all your brain juice, so only do that kind of training in little bits... but it's very effective.

Also, I noticed that your paintings are a lot better than your drawings. Usually that's not the case. You usually can't paint what you can't draw. At first I though maybe you had magic painting powers. But no. It's just that you were using reference for the paintings and no refs for your drawings.

tl;dr: use refs for 80% of everything you draw for now and you'll be all set

I have big pen size with high hardness for pressure sensitivity so even a slight touch can create a hard bold line, at a large canvas sizes you can get crisp results. I'm not sure about the mechanics of this but I flick at my tablet kinda fast with my arm/wrist a lot lol a lot of lines wont be perfectly straight but even with a slight curve I still get that jagged sharp look I personally like. You could also use line tools/stabilization but they kinda slow things down and I just hate latency because I'm impatient and like to speed through, those tools are usually only for cleanup if ever.

You can do the same sorta thing in traditional if you're inclined >picrelated

Here are the ones I'm considering:

watercolor is hard to master, if you want to do it, I suggest, you think of light and space differently. You apply light first, meaning, the first layer is the highlights, you apply the colors of the highlight, a tint of color, or you can use the paper itself as the highlight, meaning you start directly with shadows. Become like water has never been more accurate, you must understand how it flows and how it puddles, each puddle has a limited time frame where you can apply more paint or mix a type of colors to have a diffused, or gradient effect. I recommend preparing puddles of watercolor, pre-mixed before you start painting.

Tips: Always angle your drawing board to create, each time you paint, you want to see a droplet size puddle, not too much that it drips, not too little that it cannot pond, that way, you have some time to change brushes or add colors.

That's more construction drawing than gesture, but it's still a good exercise.

Start with a line of action and then add the direction of the shoulders/hip but in a more exaggerated angle, then a ovoid shape for the ripcage and pelvis, connect them, add some basic shading

So I decided to draw a Sonic character today, so I drew Surge.

The middle sketch I drew first, looked pretty off and cruddy (i messed up the proportions of her arms/hands as well as her torso), but the second one (on the left) which I wanted to try doing a more fancy ambitious pose with...somehow came out looking decent?

No pose references were used. And even the fingers, while not perfect at all, don't look too awful.

I dunno how I was able to even draw that already at this point, I know it doesn't look great (obviously) but that pose feels way too advanced for someone whose still very /beg/ since I've not even been drawing for four months.

Regardless, I am not satisfied with my current skill set, just surprised that I am advancing more I guess compared to when I tried drawing before in the past. It feels weird still, I keep thinking that sketch is a tracing of some other fan art, but I swear to god it isn't.

>>7026138
I’d use the version of this with an anime (bunny?) girl as a reference if I were you. Changing the gender and body type of your ref is pretty fucking tricky and adjacent to drawing from imagination… which is extra hard. So chin up, we all suck at least at some things, (even Frazetta often hid the feet) but as long as we keep going we’ll suck less

You need to find your springtime bliss within you. No matter how sad, broken, or painful your circumstances. You as a being, have the will to power, the same god-given power of free will to alter the fabric of reality. With that in mind, to defeat your mental state is a tall task, or a walk in a park. Most importantly it is a feasible task, you have to find the inner strength to change what you can. Good luck.

My personal opinion is that lineart needs to be cleaner. There's a lot of stuff that could be cleaned that just looks dirty and not like the usual sketchy lineart. Also tons of white dots from the fill tool not filling between the sketchy lines. You should use a layer below and color there and be more deliberate and careful with it.

Sketchy lineart is a thing and can look very good, but you should look up pieces that use it and try to make it look like that.

biggest things that stood out to me are:
1- both of their arms are super long especially wierd mismatch between size of upper and lower arm
2- the torso is short or the hips are too high. gray guy's torso ends /hips begin right below the pecs. Gray guy's finger joint lengths also are a bit crazy.
3- buttcrack seems wierd, maybe too long or maybe the kinda awkward lack of negative space in the dick region.

I am mere doodler with no real study, but I'm taking an elective drawing course at uni just for fun. It's all online so kind of unstructured, the guy just puts out a few lectures a week and trusts you to go at your own pace and upload whatever whenever. Kinda cool I guess, it forces the class to interact so it's kinda like /beg/ but everyone sucks more. My gf thinks it's cool though, she wants to try this specific class but can't because enrolling is a pain in the ass. Does anyone know of something similar I can just buy her and I a seat in? I'm not worried about it being an atelier course, I think she just wants to noodle and doodle and pretend it's serious because it's a class. Something from NMA maybe? Is there a lot of interactability in their classes or it's just watch video and draw thing?

Thanks anon, I appreciate it. The thing is, I want to move out of porn, and I want to draw small fantasy comics, action, things that are more interesting. I just don’t know where to begin, because while I like this picture, I can’t reproduce that quality on a consistent scale, nor can I draw dynamic poses and interesting perspective. There’s a lot I know I can do separately, but I was hoping to find something I can save some time with and work on multiple angles at once because this is a hobby I can’t spend as much time as I’d like on. Perhaps that’s a pipe dream and I’ll have to sit down and work on individual aspects over time.

And fair critique, I don’t draw nearly enough humanoid so my faces are a bit unpracticed.

No, you are entirely right on that. I began at the ass and face and made stuff fit after that, which lead to some wonky places. Though this is a bit older now, and I don’t intend to return to it. I’ll try to keep these critiques in mind for future pictures. I just wanted an example of how I can be very deficient in core aspects, but make things look nice on the surface to distract from those. Maybe that’s a skill on the surface, but when you’re trying to draw things that are non-coom brain, those tricks can’t hide issues as well.

>>7028159
I think you’re entirely correct, at the very least getting out of my comfort zone is a good start. I’ll begin the gesture for sure, too.

Just draw studies of art and refs you like so much you’d spend time staring at it anyway. Whether that’s a chibi Deadpool, a nice puffy cameltoe, Mecha Godzilla, a badass full page spread of a sick action scene, or even dirty feet.

You can also start by doing a minimum viable amount of drawing to technically count as “doing drawing.” Like a single line. Or a triangle. That single shitty line is enough to build a little momentum and then the second line becomes easier and then you’ve already got your art shit out so you might as well draw. It’s about overcoming inertia. You probably unironically have ADHD and a real diagnosis and meds will help a little. Carnivore diet will also help, probably a lot.

>> No.7028429

>>7028416
Also a few hours a day is too much to attempt while a beg imo. Aim low enough that your goal is actually achievable. Hence the “single line” goal. Once you’ve done that, you’ve met the commitment to do some drawing. If you really want to stop then you can. But just that line is probably enough to break the inertia and get you drawing for a little bit.

Another strategy is to study whatever is super interesting to you and then when you start to feel fatigue, study some other completely different art thing. For me personally, when I start to get burned out on studies, I draw some fat asses and thick thighs and such for a bit, and it replenishes my mana.

every time I post a finished piece people tell me that my construction/perspective is off, why the fuck would I sink more time into something with flawed fundies
the moment I post finished I know someone's going to go "hurr durr polished turd" but if I post pre polished you all sperg out like that, no winning with tards

looking at it it seems a bit more readable than hampton so far, should i get the moonrune pdf and try copying some from there?
Also the reason I haven't done an illustration/full study yet is because I wanted to do the isolated muscle groups to the point where I've at least done some arms and legs as well

My faces look like potatoes and I don't know how to draw open mouths. My general aesthetic taste is also questionable.

Any advice?

Going to go ahead and just draw a couple pages of referenced faces.

Its awesome that you are creating your own references, I think people really don't take advantage of having a camera 24/7 with them. I would advice in getting a bluetooth shutter remote and a cheap tripod, recreating the pose will benefit you in creating empathy with the pose too, feeling the weight, where it hurts/strains, etc. The next step to improve the set would be to have some kind of monitor for the smartphone camera, screen mirroring the smartphone on a laptop works well for this purpose.

if you want, I just use whats publicly available, its enough for my level, but again your level is above mine...

why not just doing an illustration focusing on what you have studied? If you keep the path you are currently you will burnout and when you are finally decide to do an illustration you will be bummed because it will not end like you envision, or at least thats what i've seen and experienced.

Do NOT use stabilization if you don't wanna gimp yourself. Draw with your shoulder, google it if you don't know what that means.

Question about anatomy: How is it that picrel looks good even though you can only see 2 sets of Nappa's abs? Shouldn't his trunks go higher up his waist if they were to cover his lower set of abs?

I'm getting the impression I'm getting worse the further I get into fwap. The the bottom rows look much worse than the earlier ones.
