Will turn 28 this year.
Starting to get midlife crisis of working 280 hours a month on a heart-wretching corporate wageslave job for 5 years.
Considering carreer switch.
Picked up animation with primary motivation being to animate scenes from a long-lived manga that hasn't received any new sequel for a decade.
Start to learn Japanese as I polish my skill.
Planning to apply for a job in Japanese animation industry, fully aware of it's a fucked up industry, completely ignore all the "i won't ever work for the japanese studio anymore" doompostings on Xitter.
Somebody please tell me I'm going to regret this decision.

I'm in the same boat, except I want to be a mangaka. If I can't make manga work, then I'll be an illustrator, background painter, designer, or some other kind of commercial artist.

I love animation and I love watching those Sakuga Mad compilations, but I have no confidence that I can do it myself. So I just lurk this thread, hopefully so that I can pick up some kind of gem or piece of knowledge that can help me form a study plan to learn animation. I don't have 5-10 years left to polish it through trial and error. I can draw, but I know how difficult animation is, and i wish there were more organized study methods for it, other than just animation your own shots over and over again and hoping something changes

>Start to learn Japanese as I polish my skill.
You don't need Japanese unless you plan to move to Japan, nowadays Nips will hire anyone from Twatter even if they only speak English or not even that like a woman in my country got hired in 2021.
>Planning to apply for a job in Japanese animation industry, fully aware of it's a fucked up industry, completely ignore all the "i won't ever work for the japanese studio anymore" doompostings on Xitter.
Isn't that bullshit mostly happening to one team of Mappa? 2 directors quitted Mappa to start their own animation studio that isn't exploitative (lmao) and a French or Italian guy sweared to never worked for Mappa again.
>Somebody please tell me I'm going to regret this decision
You'll regret this decision, specially because they rarely hire anyone older than 25, look it up Japanese about this age discrimination in anime studios, and the pay is abysmal, something like $300 per month for Dougaman (In-betweener, Clean up) which is way below the minimum wage there.
Animators there live in dormitories and they eat ramen every day... Passion jobs are a bitch.

why don't you just work in western animation? there's plenty of anime adjacent and actually soulful studios out there making cool stuff that you'd get payed a generous amount for (providing you ACTUALLY have the skills, of which case even freelancing is a good way of going)

NTA, but it goes without saying the animation industry is a lot bigger than just anime. There are a lot of smaller studios that are looking for animators in the west that do get contract work from larger companies. For example, Taiko Studios, which blends a bit of the western illustrative sensibilities with eastern animation. A colleague worked for them and she’s been doing quite well working doing freelance. There are many more studios out there in the west that are like that if you do your research.

are you using a rig?
or are your layers at least in a hierarchy?
eg. you select the upper arm and move it, and the forearm and hand also move with it automatically
most cutout animators will do frames like yours as keyframes, and then add tweens to cushion the movement. afaik wonder was done in either flash or toon boom, probably flash, and they tweened the hell out of it
what program are you using to make this? its looking great but just needs smoother inbtweeens

be careful that everything is the same in every view. the top of the head is pulsing. also the jaw shrinks when facing away. you might be trying to do some extreme perspective but for turnarounds, perspective is almost always flat except for feet because you need those as reference
keep it up though, paper animation is harder because you cant just fix it in 2 seconds like digital

these are the same people that dont know that sea weed and plankton do the heavy lifting in producing the world's oxygen supply and trees are pretty shit at it
these people also think they're above religion without realizing its just another social technology on par withe language that helps unify stabalise massive populations that would otherwise have no reason to work towards a common good while also completely failing to realize that by claiming to be "enlightened athiests" without actually practiing any hard sciences makes them a quasi-worshipper of "le expert certified science" which is a just as if not a lot more amleable to influence from globohomo types who selectively fund and suppress studies to propogte their own brand of world religion that parades as a non religion
this juxtaposition lies at the heart of so many of these performative virtue-signalling "uwuw we rebel against the machine but not le hecking sciencerinooos" that leads to the kinda people who rat on churches for holding mass during curfews while unquestionably taking massproduced vax for a disease so deadly that you gotta get tested to even know you have and has a lotta fishy shit around it

Its one of those things you can't unsee when you realise just how deep it fucking goes
Its an attempt by new age elite to disslove any community loyalties beyond ethnic to make subpopulations easier to destabilize and control
its poetic that most "le woke" "le progresive" "hecking expert sciencerino" fags engage in religious zealotry that would put the salem witch trial to shame without realizing how they've become exactly what they imagine themselves to be rebeling against
Its shit like this that made me reconnect with my local church community

>> No.7030933

Hello I am new. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but not sure how to Google for this answer. I'm learning 2D animation using Clip Studio Paint and am trying to re-use assets (i.e. smaller elements from previous frames). As far as I can tell there is no better way to 'recycle' than to copy and paste them frame-by-frame, but then, this will cause issues if I decide later down the line that I want to alter this component.
Does CSP offer any way to modularize assets, or should I opt for another program to achieve this?

I'm not sure of exactly what you want to do, but you should look into CSP's tweening features. It allows you to move an object around, use the transform tool, and also be able to go back and edit that layer if you wish to change something later.

I know some points that could be improved, like the running cycles, but I don't want to touch this thing anymore

Do you guys have any software recommendations if I want to animate something over an existing video? Something that maybe lets you open the video frame by frame and let you draw over it? Or I don't know if there's better ways to do this

really adorable, reminds me of an animation about this person jumping around the world.

>> No.7034078

I like those animations in which the artist drew multiple frame of the same still pose but the difference in brush strokes gives a feeling of movement,
Is there some software that given your frame is able to create the copies with different strokes so you can save time on that work or is it all manual?
Drawing everything twice or even four times is an absolute pain, even though you're tracing,

i dunno how detailed the artwork you're doing is, but i would guess that it's ultimately easier to just trace over an onion skin
if you wanted to be really lazy, you could try to copy-paste entire frames and then redraw specific strokes. doing that could also help you draw attention to specific areas if you pull it off well i bet. i don't think it would work for simpler styles tho since there's a lot less moving parts in something like a storytime animator's video (could've sworn i've seen at least one do it, but idr who) vs something like ed edd n eddy (i think there would be trouble with this show in particular since there's a lot of emphasis on flowing lines, but hopefully i've delivered a somewhat coherent example)

Is animation industry really in "it's over" state right now?
Wherever I go, all I see are just people crying they can't find jobs, or they got laid off, or they quit because of horrendous working conditions, or they're being replaced by AI, etc.
It's not just in animation industry, but every industry related to art.
Is it just negativity bias?
Or perhaps we're just in the middle of "bear market" where we should be greedy when others are fearful?
I'm considering to quit my wagie job and pursue career in art but after seeing the current condition of the market maybe it's wiser to keep my shitty job even if it's as shitty as it gets.

The writers strikes and mass layoffs mean its not a great time to start in the industry right now, but it aint over. animation industry has swings and roundabouts of highs and lows every 3-5 years.
i got a job in a studio. so did a couple buddies from college who graduated in 2022 and this is their first ever gig, started working a few weeks ago. they're starting off in the industry even though its at a low.
a lot of studios get tax writeoffs for hiring juniors. theres bound to be something open, just keep applying, look abroad too if you can (canada, ireland, france, korea).
the thing that stands in the way for most people is your own portfolio and your skill coming in to the industry. thats why a lot of people severly struggle at first, because theyre met with a wall when they graduate. studios will teach you a lot but they're not interested in people who dont already have a certain level of skill. theyre not going to build you up from 0. take a shit tonne of courses and get your portfolio as close to industry standard as you can so you can better your chances of finding a job. scene prep and rigging are in need of fresh blood right now.
keep your wagie job if you can though. it took a lot of people i know 1.5-3 years of work after graduating college before they broke in.

ok nobody helped me so i fixed it my self
but how can i make body movement like spring when hitting by bat? like this tutorial
https://youtu.be/BFLrgKMujGk?si=awvRIkmyJl5yS4Hp&t=523

>> No.7041196

>>7041127
So I downloaded you gif and did some analysis sololey focused on the melee aspect
> the speed of the bat is okay
>on the 67 when the bat makes contact, there's no movement of the head; in fact, the head only moves on the 69th frame, which disconnects it from the strike of the bat. it should be moving on either frame where the bat makes contact or the frame immediately after with more spacing since the force of the bat is large enough to move the mass that is the head
> the head should move and tilt in an upward manner since the bat is going from down to upwards.
> the body should follow the head
>there should be some deceleration since the strike isn't enough to launch the person into the air of the screen and some rebound as the body tries to readjust. so sort of a soft whiplash
If I had to recommend a madness animation to analysis with good melee it would be Madness Redeemer 2: Revenger, especially the final fight. Use the "<" and ">" buttons on your keyboard to go through the parts where the people strike each other.

>> No.7041539

It's a little better, everything appears okay until frame 70-71 where the body begins to move forward but the head is still accelerating backward. You'll notice in "A Comprehensive Madness Tutorial" the body never moves forward after getting hit, it tilts forward but it's still moving backwards from the hit. Try to avoid body parts jittering back and forth, they have mass so if they move in one direction and want to go in the opposite direction unless they are struck in that opposite direction by a greater force they have to decelerate in their current movement direction, and then accelerate in the new direction because of inertia. For now, just focus on the head and body, don't worry about the hands and feet

I don't have a lot of time with other stuff on my schedule, but I was thinking of doing 3 frames a day, 7 days out of the week to get 21 frames for an animation.
I'm going to give it a try, but if you have any advice on this kind of exercise I'm all ears.

>> No.7055591

>>7055543
Two questions about your exercise:
Why do you want to make 21 frames specifically? It seems weird to me to go into making an animation with a set amount of frames if you don't have a reason.
How complex is your animation? 3 frames a day seems like pretty much nothing unless you're making a fully-rendered animation. Plus, I think it would actually be harder to do only 3 frames per day if you don't already have the animation planned out beforehand.

>> No.7055608

>>7055591
well, the reason is to not get carried away. work within a limit. especially since im already limited with my schedule.
its not going to be very complex. going to work with some simple gestures or action poses.
its not going to be fully rendered. just line work. ill go the extra mile if i like where the idea is going.

I been interested in making a motion comic, something like the Watchmen motion comic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yw9Lf0z4N8
I was thinking of making the art on my normal art software and then use code to animate them -- basically run it on an html 5 canvas, with the idea that code will do the heavy lifting of having to move the assets around but I feel there must be a better way.
What software or tools do you guys recommend for very limited animation? like Epithet Erased or Clutch Cargo.

>> No.7059071

>>7058298
If you do super limited animation and not have any limbs bend in any way, you can do everything in most editing software like Premiere or Davinci Resolve which is free. Just draw whatev the pose the character is in, export the drawing with transparency, and transform them around overtop the scene.

The problem would be for any limb bending/puppeting like in the Watchmen motion comic. Like you CAN do it with some warp tools but it's gonna get messy, it'd be better done in software that has puppet tools imo. Toonboom and Animate both have puppet rig tools, but you'll need to pirate or spend money on em. Not sure of free options personally, you might be able to do something in Blender where you project your drawings as textures on flat objects and rig those objects maybe?

With Sora it takes a lot less effort to create something alright looking, but it's still super hard to implement any notes on anything ignoring the lack of "soul" in a lot of these videos coming out lately. Every project includes revisions and revisions at every stage of production, and with AI it's still incredibly hard to implement without starting from scratch. And it's so much more expensive and time-consuming to edit an AI's video as an artist. Once AI can consistently make revisions on something it creates is when artists will be fucked the most imo.

Tried to work on my first animation today, as a new artist as well. This is much harder than drawing figures in a void. I've already limited my scope to 18 seconds of audio and I'm limiting the movement, but I feel like I should just try to get one motion done right now.

>> No.7064194

Generic 3d Pixar slop is dead. Stilted puppet-rigged 2d is dead. If you want to be an animator in the age of AI, you've gotta invest in making soulful animations with a unique style.
Quality animation is great because the animators put so much thought into every frame of movement. So many chances for the artist to make creative decisions that put meaning into their work. AI, by pure virtue of being a machine, cannot make creative decisions, and thus cannot put any meaning into whatever it produces. It is that distinction that lends us animators use in content creation yet. We make animations that have perfect spacing and perfect timing, tailor-fit to the project we're working on. I'd like to see AI try syncing movement to audio, or making a visual gag that is funny.

lipsync is a lot easier to manage and easier to think about when you focus on the body language of the characters first. if the characters can convincingly represent the performance and acting without any mouths, then adding in the lipsync later on in another pass will heighten the effect. animators are actors, so knowing body language is a huge thing. keep it loose, use compression and relief with your poses, and remember that the shoulders are the eyebrows of the body
it's also good to keep it simple, and use the least amount of mouths needed to convey the performance. i personally think of the word MOUTHFEELS when im animating lipsync, because that word itself contains pretty much every mouth piece that you'll need for any convincing lipsync. it's a small amount of shapes, and doesn't get too complex or make beginner mistakes that are too distracting, such as using the L shape for N all the time. we technically do that IRL, but in animation it doesn't read as well as just using a closed teeth shape. the up and down motion of the bottom lip and jaw are usually what sells the motion the most, and to heighten the appeal and variety of your lipsync, have the bottom lip and jaw follow arcs as it moves up and down.

the posing is nice but i think it needs a bit more time held on the 2 extremes for it to read well
you can get away with drawing some more inbetweens around when hes in the air anticipating his foot hitting the ground. once hes on the ground keep the frames as they are
also, his back leg, his foot leaves the ground and then goes backwards when in the air, it reads a little bit funny
youve got really strong work all over this thread its pretty sick, these are just 2 nitpicks in an otherwise really strong show of work imo

>>7070232
see pic, these are the basic mouth shapes, youll be transitioning between these no matter what style of animation youre at. the smoothness of the lipsync just depends on how many inbetweens you give it

>>7073960
some things are nice about this anon but the big issue is the timing. right now it feels like the brick floats to the ground. the spacing should be tight at the start and get wider and wider, while your spacing here is very even.
i see what youre doing with the brick landing on its edge and then tilting towards the ground. but this makes it feel very light. the brick starts to flip as it falls, but i think it would rotate more because its heavy and the air dragging on it wouldnt stop it spinning. lastly, when it hits the ground, dont ease in to it settling flat, it still has all that momentum behind it so it should SLAM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFxxuHIpQO8
you can see here that it starts slow, speeds up as it goes towards the ground, it flips over itself, and even though it lands on its side, it settles flat quite quickly
your drawings are good, just take another stab at the timing of it

I wouldn't mind upgrading my PC >>7072072 but it does get super frustrating when it takes a second for the next frame to load when you have a bunch of layers, specially when you're going frame to frame while you proofwatch.
Do you guys just render shorter scenes and clip them back together via davinci?

getting back to practicing. How's everyone?

>You can alternate between drawing on 1s, 2s, and 3s in the same shot.
I did this in this animation, specifically in the hands scene consisting of 10 frames. The left side with the keyboard button is only 2 frames, alternating with a pause between frames 5-8. The right side with the mouse has 5 frames, including 2 for forward/backward movement, and 3 frames for clicking, also with a similar pause as before.

Opinions?

Thanks for the compliment and you are right, I would benefit from having a peg bar if I was trying to be serious. I am doing these on note papers and quad and margin exercise books.

In the professional world, how do I know how many keyframes I should draw for a set action? Does it differ from a person to another or is there a rule to follow?

>> No.7078990

>>7078168
>how many keyframes I should draw for a set action
depends on the type of studio and project you're working on
usually for say serialized projects the director sets out guidelines for the base actions for the mundane side of things
for the important parts the lead animators ideally gets to decide what's best for conveying that motion
might also depend on what rhythm/pacing is set by the rough animatic

It's good.
But I feel like it needs more "charge up" to his jump.
It needs more frames leading into the jump so you can feel the force of him pushing off instead of it just being 2 frames and he's in the air.

Is there a simpler way to extend multiple folder's worth of clips at the same time? I'm new and I'm currently shift clicking each box individually and dragging the edge all the way to my new end time and its kind of frustrating when I have a ton of folders.

I've done some rough sketches of stop motion puppets of the characters from Omori. What do people think, especially about the bodies, which I rather crudely traced?
