I have more difficulty learning through construction, I hate using rulers as well, and I have more fun drawing without it, is there a way/ method to learn in a more intuitive way?

unless you're doing technical drawing then you shouldn't use rulers at all

simply teh contstruction to the point where you can freehand it. Then when you draw that new version more and more, it will naturally become straighter. Dont worry about not making it straight.

Nobody actually uses rulers and ten minutes to construct a loomis head, its all just theater. You need to freehand a quick sketch and then draw over it with no effort, even if its bad. You get better by repetition.

You don't have to use construction for every single aspect of the drawing. I use it when I'm trying to figure out how something is placed in 3D space or there's a lot of parts to something and I need to break it down.

Question.
Why don't we just skip right to the simplified anatomy when doing construction?
I thought the whole point was to start simply and then get more detailed as you go along, but this kinda implies it's the other way around

You don't draw fully detailed muscles and bones as a base outside of studies. The first two "steps" are just there so you can see the underlying structure and understand WHY exactly you're simplifying the hips in that shape.

I learned basically by copying drawings I liked, drawing things in front of me, and trying to memorize how to draw faces, figures, buildings, plants, etc. I mean, construction was definitely part of that, but I was never grinding 100 cylinders or anything like that. I would really only do basic forms and lines when I was doodling, so all the construction practice was kind of accidental and habitual. But I’ve taken a lot of classes that use construction and a lot that don’t, and it’s been really helpful to learn both approaches!

If you don’t want to construct forms, you could try this instead: take a reference photo of just one object (a person, a block, or whatever). Divide the object into only two colors, light and dark. The line between light and dark runs along the terminator of the shadow, always. If there’s reflected light in the shadow, ignore it. If there are highlights, ignore them. Do not cheat by using a threshold in photoshop: it will be wrong. You want to draw the shapes of light and dark using ONLY straight lines, no curves. Don’t think about forms, think about shapes. Try to use as few lines as possible, so you end up with a drawing made up of simple light and dark polygons. Measure the proportions, measure the angles, keep noticing and fixing mistakes. Fill in all the dark areas with a solid dark gray. This is a really fast way to get 70% of a nice realistic drawing finished, and if you get good at it you’ll be really impressed how quickly you improve. Later, when you come back to construction it’ll be easier, because you’ll be so much better at controlling your hand. Good luck!

These are from GCA. The way they render is nuts: they just ... do the rendering in one layer

>> No.7025722

Very stupid question incoming: How would you go about painting something like this?
I see there's little to no blending or lost edges and everything is blocky and cel-like. Regular rendering is substituted by areas of colors that complement each other well.
Now, does this approach rely on the linework or does one just paint over it for the most part?

construction is just a tool, people use it because it helps them, not because it's what you're supposed to do. if you can draw without construction, then go for it.

Yeah you can take the classic approach and just measure really carefully. Drawing is observing. You don't need to use construction guides to learn and improve, but they help. I propose drawing a lot from life. If you want a simple construction style that supports this, look into Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching.

Yes. It's called drawing without construction. It renders kim, vilppu, loomis, bridgeman, jap-loomis, etc all unnecessary. There is only one step:

i am 32. imho if i were to start from zero again (so, go back to 31) and wanted to learn construction i would force myself to draw the boxes again, but add in all the geometric shapes and force myself to learn object addition and subtraction in perspective. because then at least you've trained yourself to think of the perspective window you want to draw in and where to put the ground plane and how to construct from that. then once that concept of "how to draw a cylinder and add boxes and pyramids" is stuck in my head, start FWAP or something similar to learn how someone applies it to facial/figure construction. and not do whatever drawabox had prescribed which was something goofy like wasting weeks trying to draw leaves and petals.

Eventually you learn to just visualize the construction lines, unless you're cursed with aphantasia. I found, in my experience, that it's best to treat them as a learning tool rather than a requirement for good art.

Also, you just don't have to do it, there are other ways to memorize proportions where stuff goes.
