When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

Values and lighting my friend
I like the dramatic shadows being cast on her, but the face itself has weird feeling values - the face feels flat because your shadow values are bleeding into your light values.

I would start with hard brushes to set your values up, then blend.
That way your eyes can better judge the planes and how they read, so there is a clear distinction between shadow and lit areas. Also lets you plan good shapes.

This might help :) (Macro Bucci, love him!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcCJ2CU-bFw

I would highly, HIGHLY recommend you do trad first, and not erase anything. Not only does it give you better control over where your lines go and better understanding of the materials you're using, but it also keeps you from deleting or trying to "fix" your mistakes so you can look at them and understand what you did wrong. Also helps with chicken scratching.

Go trad first, and if drawing ends up really being your thing, start experimenting with a cheap drawing tablet.

get in a habit of checking what lines up with what across the whole drawing to check where you're at. like the right elbow lines up with left shoulder, ribcage hangs out past pelvis, etc.
you'll also have an easier time if you start with straighter lines and then try to refine it into a nice curve later.

Neither of them look like their looking at each other. Bald dude looks like he's looking at a tile on the floor.
If you want the restrained guy to look more manic show him struggling in his restraints. Have his shoulders lifted up as if he were trying to pull his arm out but to no avail. Also his hair and clothes are too straight and neat and his eyes show no real emotion. When you're in a panic your faces scrunches up and shows wrinkles, which can be drawn by just adding more lines. Also have him sweating to convey the tweaking.

Based. Pencil or pen and printer paper are good for starting out. One reason is that such low-stakes materials will help you relax and draw more freely than if you were using an expensive tablet or oils. You don’t have to worry about your art being “worthy” of the medium you’re using, so there’s less pressure to be “good.” Drawing is already hard enough, and the first couple thousand drawings will suck, so using cheap trad materials makes getting lots of mileage easier

I don't know what's wrong with him but I'm 200% sure that his solution to not sucking at drawing isn't written in a fucking 50 years old atelier shit book, and I'm not saying it because I think books are useless or other shit, I'm saying this just looking at the fact that he didn't fucking improve an inch after years of sweating on guides.

Copy masters of whatever style you hope to achieve, that's what the old masters did. That being said, drawing from life and imagination are the real skillsets, the reference use is merely to practice your techniques. So the best way to copy shit is to just use it as a reference and your real output should be from life/imagination or at the very least an amalgamation of references and not a carbon copy.

It's not considered one of the greatest artworks of all time, you may be misinterpreting its significance. I think if anyone posts that image as an example of DaVinci's ability its as an example of his grasp of human form. You can feel the life in the image even if it's not a 1:1 literal translation of his model. Pic related is a life drawing I made of my wife a while back and you can see how I took great lengths to make it look as much like her as possible but my amateur hand is obvious by comparison, there isn't nearly as much life in my drawing as in DaVincis, don't you agree? His is so effortless, with 1/10 of the lines he managed to capture the humanity.

Well, I'm barely slipping into int myself (I'm the guy that made the op pic) but from what I've been learning throughout the years is that trying to chase a certain artstyle, while not bad, will lead you nowhere. Artstyle is something that develops naturally over time as your skill develops further, and you take note of what you personally find more visually appealing.

My art style has been fluctuating wildly over the years as I've experimented with dozens of different methods until I finally reached one that suits me the most, that being heavy lineart and high contrast, so YOUR style, even though every person is different, should come out in a similar manner. Experiment with different methods, keep grinding fundies and, most importantly, don't stop drawing, and you should end up with a style that you're happy with naturally.

Also, not having a set style yet doesn't mean that your current drawings will be worse because of it.

I have no aspirations or ideas to draw. I don't know why I even want to draw. I don't have any art to show, and I've never been able to come up with any ideas. Do I actually want to be an artist or not?
I don't know if I just like the idea of doing it or actually doing it. I want to be an artist, but I can barely actually do any of the art. It's inseparable. It'd be like me trying to be a body builder without lifting weights.
If I wanted to actually do anything, then wouldn't I just be doing it? I should give up.
I have literally tried doing several artistic hobbies and gave up each of them immediately when I was a teenager.

Ideas come and go on a whim. When you get one you grab it and draw it. During the time spans when you don't have one you practice basics over and over again.
>If I wanted to actually do anything, then wouldn't I just be doing it?
You don't feel like doing it because you suck and you're not improving. So you lose motivation which makes you question whether you should even continue.
>Even when I look art guides, i literally cannot comprehend them or figure them out
Because you're probably looking things up out of order. You're trying to learn a thing without understanding the thing you need in order to do the other thing. Get a book and do it page by page and you'll already see notable improvement. As you get better you'll also get more ideas.

I'm on a shitton of adderall and stimulants and still nothing. Even when I felt my absolute best on them, I still couldn't bring myself to do anything. I feel like I'm a locked in person except I can still move around.
I've legitimately never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby and have gotten lazy over the years with my only actual one which is writing and the only reason I'm good at writing is because I wanted people to be able to understand what the fuck I was saying and I wanted to write good stories because I thought I'd never be able to make them in a visual medium, but that's it. Hello beg, the xmas are over, i drew like once in last 7 days, gained about 2 kilos and finished diablo 2 (all 7 characters, normal only, scaling on players 8). Now as an homeage to the game i will produce 1 complete beg artwork for it. This is WIP, all 7 chars in a pub. And oh my god trying to combine all i have learned so far hurts my brain a lot.

I am back to digital drawing too for now. My pen doesn't have the friction on the glass so my lines are messy but I guess I need to draw on it for 300 hours before I get used to it. I also break up my digital drawing with pencil sketchpad observational drawing because I find that the most fun.

between too much accents and poor choices/placement, I get what you want to do, but it doesn't look appealing to me, the cheekbone lines make her look malnourished (something a muscle mommy must never look like unless it's a day before competition). And if you want to jump straight into figure drawing then work on your gesture. You are overworking it and treating it as a finished drawing. You don't need to draw the hands and feet in a gesture, you simply need to show the motion of the figure. As for the figure itself it looks twisted, as if her torso is facing her ass.

This is probably my first time doing cel shading in a while.

Chose colors based on sight, applied shadow layer on top of flat, and used mostly pen for shading and some airbrush/blur for details like bounce light. It took me a while to make the shadows not too dark, but I'm still not happy with the colors. Although I tried to mute the background with light blue to make the yellow stand out better, it was very hard to work with. Couldn't tweak it much without making it too dark or bright. Wanted to keep the backgrounds simple.

Don't believe that anon. This progression is from three successive attempts with only a few practice drawings in-between. It's less about breadth of time practicing and more about having an "aha" or "click" moment that pushes you to the next level. The trick was to challenge myself. I got really good at rendering/copying from picture reference to build up a drawing skillset but had only ever used graphite pencils. So I decided to try painting something. Top left is my first oil painting, which I did from life to add extra challenge, did some drawing inbetween, then did another oil painting from life which was a little cleaner. Stopped drawing altogether for about two years to focus on painting miniatures exclusively because I became obsessed with it. Just this past week I decided to draw something but using pastels for the first time, and I made that piece on the bottom. I truly attribute most of my progress to that one month I subbed to New Masters Academy which unlocked my brain a bit. In that past 4 years I've maybe drawn/painted about 10 pieces? And maybe 30 miniatures? The point being it seems like a lot of time spent practicing but its really something I do once in a while, the trick was the click, once you see it you have it. I suggest really looking at techniques on HOW to draw instead of just trying to draw an anime girl or some shit like half of you guys do. This video should do something for you, once you can draw a head you can draw anything using the same principles.

Yes, if you're 35 and are trying to break into art for the purpose of starting a family then it's time to reassess. Focus on your IT to make you money and make that sacrifice of putting your dream aside. Having children is all about sacrifice, taking that step is just one of many you'll have to make. That being said, don't quit pursuing your artistic goals, but being pragmatic about your situation should take emphasis.

>>7003977
I am this anon >>7003956 >>7002656 and I didn't really start trying to get good at drawing until I was 30, I'm closer to 40 now. It's never too late, that being said I make my living in graphic design not traditional art; I treat my traditional work strictly as a hobby. I strongly advise any anons here who seek to make a living in art to focus less on their technical abilities and focus more on marketing themselves. Plenty of shit artists with huge followings because marketing is everything. That being said, if you're posting in this thread for critiques are you really that concerned with making it? You obviously still have a lot to learn, keep practicing and don't delude yourself into making money with art any time soon. It's not defeatist, its realistic, it's never too late but you should never expect to break through or rely on success on anything you pursue. Do it because you enjoy it.

>>7003992
Making art is very frustrating, especially in the modern age where you are constantly inundated with showcases of talented artists with insane prolific output. The problem is a lot of anons here don't have proper guidance or foundation and want to skip all the steps and wonder why they aren't being paid to draw anime girl on white background #260000023402002500.

Buddy, your life hasn't even started yet. You have more resources than anyone else here older than you ever had at their fingertips to get good quick. Van Gogh didn't start painting until he was 27.

>>7004056
If you're older than me you're probably already 40+ in which case you should already have an established career or some field where you are deriving income; which sounds like it isn't art from what you're telling me. An hour ago you gave this advice to a fellow anon:

"Do you want to give up just to avoid the anxiety of maybe failing?
Go back to fucking drawing, stop thinking about this kind of shit. The more you torture your dick with this crap the less chances you have to achieve your fucking goal."

I suggest you stop torturing your dick and being so down on yourself that you would consider suicide over failure in achieving your art goals. Can you post what you consider to be your best work so we can at least see where you're at? If you're seeking encouragement its best to start there, you're obviously in a rut and I don't really see a problem in "blogging" about it if it'll help you reevaluate.

No, I don't have any career. I spent my twenties between junkies and hobos, and I was notorious in my area so when I finally cleaned up the only jobs I could find were immigrant tier shit since everyone and their mom knew i was a complete no good fucktard, and where I could I worked myself to the bone in order to save some money, pay myself a photoshop class and some equipment and try this art shit, thing that happened ten years later, when I lost the only decent job I ever found because I got involved in a fight with some gangster piece of shit kid and the boss started suspecting I was up to shit again.
Anyway the point here is just that you're right, and I need to stop being a retard, it's just hard to stop being a retard when you're an actual one

As long as you're self aware that your life requires adjustment you have a chance to change things around. Just take a step back and weigh your options, I guarantee suicide shouldn't even be on the table once you think things through. Have you thought about going the AI engineer route? Learning how to talk to the machine and creating LORAs/models and training AI sets? I think the graphic design industry is due for a shakeup, and that designers/printers won't be replaced but that AI will definitely be incorporated as a tool and skillset and anyone learning how to interact with it now is getting a huge opportunity and jumpstart for that change. Go check out stable diffusion which you can get for free onto your desktop (so long as you have a competent graphics card to help generate images) and tinker with it for a bit. I know AIslop is a meme but it really is an actual skillset that you can market yourself with in the near future as a supplement to your graphic design skillset.
