If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98
New collaborative: https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
w/ic/i: https://sites.google.com/site/ourwici/

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

Let's keep it nice and civil in here, folks.

Is there any tool/website that has the following:
>assortment of figures from various angles
>each figure has a seperate layer for the gesture, construction boxes/cylinders, muscles/fat, and final contours
>maybe also has 3d models of figures where you can visualize the boxes and cylinders from all angles by moving the camera
This would be immensely helpful to understand how muscles and such should be placed in the drawing, rather than just using the final contoured image as a reference. I am using the Hampton approach which is nice and has a process but his tutorials are quite helter-skelter.

burnt out techie, complete beg on art. I'm starting to learn being a techie is not feasible forever in my life and I need to something to fall back on. Thinking of becoming a webcomic artist or, dare I say it, "game dev".

Is it worth it to go to school for this shit or should I just grindset as per the sticky. School also for meeting new people and stuff. I don't see any webcomic meetups in my area

From one person in STEM to another--seriously, don't do art with any expectation of making any money from it. I'd venture a guess that nearly 90% of what gets artists popular enough that they can eat from their work is sheer luck (picked up by the algorithm, retweeted/reposted by the right person, made a meme that happened to land right, etc.) If you're going to try for corporate art positions rather than Patreon bucks, you're going to be competing with people who have been doing art for literally a lifetime longer than you have. If you're insistent on switching fields, gamedev is actually going to be a much safer option for you IMO compared to trying to make it just as an artist.

For what it's worth, I personally take the approach that my boring STEM job is just there to make me enough money to retire and devote the rest of my life to art. It's a necessary evil I live with in order to find actualization where my passion actually lies.

Stay techie, draw for fun and draw like crazy!
Doing webcomic for income is hard - mad competition, minimal income options from online publishing.. Maybe its doable if you live in a 3rd world country.
IMO School wont teach you to draw, most schools assume you know the fundamentals on entry.
Get grinding, make friends.

If you can spare the tuition fees without going into debt and your government hands out student allowances I'd say go for it. Fine arts degrees will either have you doing proper work, or just train you to make bullshit "performace art" so do your research into their alumni. Contacts and friendly competition is the fastest way to get good and get into the industry.
Otherwise stick to the tech work but cut back to part-time hours (or whatever hours support your basics) and use the spare time to grind it out.
The /beg/ sticky gives you a huge leg up against all the other self-taught artists out there. You seem like you're asking the right questions, potential GMI so long as you pick up a pencil and start yesterday.
Few tips:
>Youtube is your friend
>Galleries host life modelling classes (vital)
>Only draw what you want to draw
>Bad stories/dialogue can be covered up with good art/distinct style
>Hit up local Zinefests and get a stall once you've got a body of work, they're chock-full of liberal arts majors but just grit your teeth until you meet decent artists
Once you've made one (1) complete comic with decent art you're ready to start platforming and monetising, there's some shockingly bad comics out there that've attained decent success so throw yourself into it if it's really what you wanna do.

I've never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby, ever. All I can do is type and that's it. I've never finished writing a single story in my entire life. Now I want to try different hobbies. Every single one of them when I was younger, I gave up on.

Basically, if you can draw a cube in perspective from imagination you're ready to move on from academic perspective exercises. Separate each form of your composition into perspective cubes, then draw each form inside those cubes. Eventually you'll intuitively "see" the cubes while sketching, and you'll be able to approximate all your perspective from the first two contour lines you draw around each form.

Merry Christmas, frens. With this, I have finished studying Hampton’s anatomy drawings. My body is now ready for Bridgman. Probably gonna draw some naked ladies first, though. And might work through Dynamic Sketching as well. Or maybe I’ll do a perspective book. But anyway, feels good to finish this.

Boxes are always a good things to draw. Cylinders and other primitive forms, too. Look up some basic perspective videos (David Finch has good ones) and use that to get an idea of how to draw boxes in perspective. Thick lines can look better because you’ve got more margin for error so you can get away with being sloppier. It’s probably better to go a bit thinner for learning to draw. Probably not a huge deal.

Either I am physically disabled or there is something I’m fundamentally misunderstanding about drawing as a starting line /beg/.
How do a draw a *single* straight line? Or *one* good looking square?

Possible misunderstandings:
1. They don’t actually have to be perfect as long as I’m trying, they get better over time.
2. Drawing in general is actually way slower than I realize (genuinely trying at a square I take 7ish seconds, am I way off?)
I never drew as a kid so I don’t even have the basics down, I’m attempting to start from actual zero.

Partially correct. Nta but obviously your line confidence increases as you draw familiar shapes a lot, but I can tell anon up there is learning to draw with his whole arm, not just his wrists. Artists who do draw better and never have to worry about wrist pain. If you draw with your wrist you still achieve good line quality, but at a heavy cost, and it won't be the possible best you can do, practically drawing only at 60% of your capability at your best. Here’s what I drew today. Been trying to get right this black shapeshifting woman demon with a nappy haired yeti form, that is part of that story I was working on. I also tried drawing my hand, and someone said boxes shouldn’t be practiced unless it’s for a purpose so I tried drawing a small floating sculpture with boxes around it and worked on crosshatching. Then i did upper right and tried to get the eyelashes I was trying to draw the first time, just a signal of her in every form she takes. Then I tried drawing the yeti form, but my hand got numb

I want to draw those hair pieces as like toony weapons the characterccan control, all her powers involving growing and mass shifting hair in beast modes or arms or whips or armor or whatever. And I can’t think of how to draw their form. It needs to be simple, to draw in animation, but it needs to look like it still fits the owl house theme. None of the released artbooks so far give any instruction on hair or eyes or whatever like those simpson sheets, so I don’t know what rules of the style I can bend here. I want her to have noticable dark red lips, and tusks. I don’t have any major references for this character like the last one, so it’s harder to gather a coherent style to her.

Hello /beg/, back again this time with some dudes. Planning on studying some actual anatomy soon.
>>6992320
I like your redraw of top left's body better than the reference. The other ones could use better attention to detail. Line up your copy in front of the reference to see what was off about what you drew, then try and fix it.
>>6992323
I'm not sure what the benefits to simply drawing boxes is. Try applying perspective to a real piece such as a cityscape, you'll still be drawing boxes but with more attached.
>>6992352
I like it, personally I think more (fine) detail to the hair would elevate it.
>>6992397
Cool style, because the butterfly creature is small in the composition I would add less detail to have it read better, I'm having trouble interpreting its details/face looks messy.
>>6992402
Needs more contrast.
>>6992407
Rendering is nice, hands and feet need work. Don't hide that foot!
>>6992409
Excellent.
>>6992411
Your proportions need work. I recommend mirror flipping your drawings or using a grid until you get used to making things symmetrical. Do not blunderbuss the smiley.
>>6992464
Line work needs better consistency. Just a matter of more practice.
>>6992475
That hair is off to me. Muddy coloring and texture I think.
>>6992487
Some proportions are too wide I think ie neck, ribcage/pelvis since go hand in hand, waist. Makes head/shoulders feel frankensteined in. Linework is excellent however, face is cute. Draw foot coward.
>>6992498
Kawaii.
>>6992501
Nice. Keep at it.
>>6992538
Good studies.
>>6992611
>>6992640
I like it. I think you're on the right track. Things of note: shoulders are different lengths, try for cleaner more consistent linework ie hand, consider different rendering techniques on clothes to convey clothing texture, maybe more expressive eyes too.
>>6992667

Middle and bottom set of boxes: None of the boxes seem to sit on the same surface, if they did, the VPs would fall on the same horizonline.
Some of them are fucked up (VP seems to be in front of the box instead of behind).

>>6992402
Great pose and sass, horrible brush texture. It feels like a grainy blur was applied to the whole image. Its also super bright except for the skirt, makes it hard to read the picture.
I would try adding more contrast by separating light and shadow more, and completely redo the edges - Make all edges hard and then sparingly add in the grainy texture.

I have a secret to share with you. Don't fap and become religious. If you copy hot woman, you get way much out of it than the average coomer who faps 3 times a day. You will want to draw it perfectly. This is why artists from the rennaicance were so great, they never had time to fap because they lived in rooms with 5 other people. So the only way to release their sexual frustration was through art.

If you try to make your gestures look good they're gonna end up looking worse, use the fewest lines possible and make them long. Gesture drawings are meant to be quantity over quality so if it looks bad just keep moving to the next pose.

Those structures around the pillar need some work. Time to whip out the ruler and straightedge and a full sheet of paper. Huge improvement! These are what you're looking for in gestures!
To answer your question, digital is great for making polished work and more detailed studies, but you'll find pencil (or better yet charcoal) will give you a ton more agility and speed when doing gesture practice, and as I'm sure you've already noticed speed is king when practicing. You can throw down gradients really quickly with picrel grips which'll give your gestures more depth.

Eh, you're going for a cartoon look so for now find some cartoons you like and try to copy how they simplify people. Before you jump into anatomy and all that more advanced stuff I'd say learn what shapes and styles are appealing to you and try to replicate them.

is the same true if you like an artist and you want to emulate their style or if you like the way an anime character is drawn, you try to copy that?

>> No.6993764

>>6993763
Yeah early on I think it's totally acceptable practice to just try copying artists you like. At that point it'll probably be too advanced to try and understand WHY the artist drew things the way they did, but copying still gets your reps in and if all else fails you can show off to others that you can draw Peter Griffin or Goku whoever.

When I started drawing as a kid I'd go print out pictures of Goku and then just recreate them, without tracing. I did that so much I just memorized the shapes and style Toriyama had and could recreate those drawings from memory and even draw my own original DBZ pictures, but I had zero fundamentals so of course those drawings looked janky. Just being able to recreate a style or art piece is pretty motivating. It feels good and that helps keep you going.

>> No.6993772

>>6993764
are you saying you should stop copying artists after a while? Me personally, I always wanted to draw stylized stuff. I never studied anatomy but I could copy real life pretty closely. The problem was It just came out too close to "real life" when I was trying to stylize

I still use other art and artists as reference but I try not to make it a blatant clone as much as I can. When I try to differentiate from the reference (of someones art) it usually looks like shit. Only one of my pieces came out decently when I free handed it

you wouldnt if you actually sat down, read a book, and learned to draw.
if this is something youre interested in doing well then you have to learn it.
and there are no shortcuts.
even if its cartoon you have to learn to draw the real thing or it will never be good because cartoon is a stylisation of the real thing and how can you stylise something that you cant draw to begin with?

Hmm... I think if you want to keep expanding your knowledge, then at some point you'll want to take a break from copying and do a deep dive into fundamentals and practice those, BUT copying/doing studies is always useful and actually becomes more beneficial later on. I just recommend beginner artists to not stress about fundamentals yet and just focus on drawing things they like, even if that's just copying. As long as you're copying to improve and not to steal from another artists for personal gain, you'll be alright.
And I'm right there with you about stylized art. That's what I want to do. I've got a folder with a bunch of stylish artists I like and what I do to practice now is draw something, but try to match their style. A pretty common one you'll see people do is copy Mike Mignola.
My biggest tips are to keep things as simple as you can and to start broad and then to add detail to that.

I don't know enough to give critique. I think it looks good, the shape is maybe too uniform. I would personally try to get a bit more contrast between the colours, maybe adding a third layer of a darker orange?

here is my opinion as a beg. I think you should simplify skirt. All the focus is drawn there. This brushwrok works for the hair you can clearly tell why. but for the dress it just results in random shapes that just distract. Also, her feet are need more detail, seems just low effort compared to other parts where its more of a minimal thing.

No reason you can't do both. Real perspective is basically math tho, you're gonna want to be as accurate as possible or it's gonna look crooked and skewed. After you get the guidelines down you can try and go over the final outline freehand to practice if you wish.
Also, take all advice you get with a grain of salt anon, we all learn differently. Some people can draw straight lines with their eyes closed, others use rulers. Both have most likely made art you like. It's all a matter of what works for YOU, and that means trying all sorts of things.

Had a somewhat lengthy (around 2 weeks or so?) break from drawing due to feeling bleh during the winter, and now really want to get back into things so I can actually draw people easily on a whim hopefully within a month...

However my main obstacle seems to be a fear of...I dunno I guess messing up a drawing? Like I'll construct the character but then suddenly the arms/hands will start to look really off and I'll end up just giving up and getting demoralized or something.

Plus I am about to start a long term animation project in Blender, which by long term I mean a long period of test animations before I make an animated short. So I feel like I am trying not to burn myself out with too much all at once but it's very difficult to not feel overwhelmed.

I barely did any 3D animation this year and it was because I kept getting distracted, drawing being one of them. But I REALLY want to get better at drawing cuz it does actually make me feel better mentally and it's just a useful skill to have that people could potentially pay me to do (this isn't the only reason I am doing it of course...but that's always a bonus). Plus it's VERY useful for 3D animation because I can draw clear storyboards that'll mean I won't need to pay someone to storyboard for my animation projects.

Anyway, what advice do you guys have regarding getting over the fear of drawing something crappy? If I feel okay tomorrow I'll try drawing Maria Amino (I was that guy who tried drawing her a while back, and I remember one of the critique sketches I got that showed where I went wrong got featured in a /beg/ op image) perhaps or maybe draw people from real life references (I know how to do construction but just need more practice with it).

I also hate how soulless my sketchy lines look at the moment.

What got over my fear of drawing bad things is to

1. Accept that you will always draw bad things. No matter how hard you work or how great your art ends up being, you will always make mistakes. Don’t fret over the quality of your drawings, just keep going and value the process above all else

2. Remember it isn’t the last thing you’re drawing. Plenty more are to come, and you can always correct mistakes once a drawing is done to see what you should work on.

3. Don’t attach yourself or your ego to your art.

4. Finished> perfect

5. Make art on something impermanent like a whiteboard or a chalk board. This will lead to you becoming less attached to what you draw since they’re so easily erasable.

Gestures seem to make sense when I watch others do it, but when I try to put it into practice, I get picrel (5 minutes each). I'm trying to follow Hampton's figure drawing books and videos but I'm just not getting it. What am I missing here?

From what I "know", I need to:
>start with the head, then work the way down the spine, then build the torso from that. The legs and arms come last and any remaining time is where you can add more form with wrapping lines.
