You don't need retarded distinctive crap tacked on to make a unique silhouette if your can nail good body language.

Look at Kaladin here. Simple military uniform with the sleeves rolled up and a spear. Noo goofy crap. No big hat. No pauldrons the size of buckets or intricate clothing. Just a simple man with the body language of a badass warrior.
