You got perfectly the mignola hair thinghies and overall seems to work pretty well, imo the only things that stick out a bit is the shadow too rounded on the lower body, hanging part of the jacket and legs imo you could use more straight/poligonal shapes there to be closer to his style. It looks fine, it's an interesting subject, not sure what do you mean by rating or where is this being posted but maybe people are oversensitive about it or doing the regular ADHD thing where they can't be bothered to look at it for more than 3 seconds.
I'd say that this could use a higher value contrast, it seems those subjects tend to benefit from that approach, think about something like pic related, it just adds to the drama and mood you're going for, if you are already thinking about that, then dial it up.
You could give a thought or two to the composition too, it does the job, but take it as an opportunity as to say something with each character, object or the environment itself, that may require to change the entire view or angle of the scene, that's a design choice and it could tap into things like foreground/midground/background hierarchy, but also to add some relevance to each one of these elements, it's also a good excuse to introduce more play into value contrast, color and palette, try changing the value and color key scale based on depth, or focal point (like the woman and the blade, how do you hint at that over everything else) and see what works best for you.
And as for the characters themselves, same with value contrast, push it more, it's better to attempt to make an exaggerated statement that drives the message than almost but not quite getting there. If the creature is imposing and deadly you can depict that with brutalized guards, maybe one has been decapitated (instead of just going "owie"), maybe the creature's hands are bloody and the place looks wrecked, anything that enhances and fits with the statement is welcome.

Typically I only paint miniatures, and it's been years since I sketched regularly, this is like, the 5th canvas piece I've attempted to paint.
I'm not happy with the grill and I shouldn't have angled the powerpack, I'm very happy with the hoses and I'm aware my highlights are a bit all over the place with where I chose to put them.

I've been drawing for some 15 years, around 6 years professionally
Recently I've hit a bit of a slump, and I wanted some advice. I know "how" to draw, I have solid fundamentals, my perspective work is great, my shape design can be lackluster sometimes, but I can identify it and fix it, and my rendering has always been something I've been proud of. But I recently feel like my drawings lack... something, and that feeling has left me completely stuck, stuck in a way I hadn't been for years. I haven't finished a drawing in some months now, and even had to get a job as a designer(ugh) because I couldn't just live off of my savings as an illustrator forever. I try and try and try and I can't leave the sketching phase anymore, it seems like I'm deeply scared of my work not being up to my standards and that makes me simply not finish them.
And it's not a lack of ideas, I have tons of ideas, I've been sketching a comic for a few weeks now, but i'll often look at it and just start over again instead of just inking the fucking thing. I have some sketches that are for T-Shirts(which always sold well on my shop), and I can't even finish that, and that's fucking solid color with halftones and usually like 4-5 colors max. My paintings are just abandoned, I completely lost my confidence in rendering anything to a finished state.
But I fucking hate being a designer, and I love drawing, I just can't fucking do it for some reason. Has anyone here gone through this?

I mean, I literally learned anatomy copying Darkstalkers, but just doing basic dynamic poses in digital has become like shitting a cactus

I did this on my phone so I know it’s rough, but I think you should pay more mind to anatomy in the lineart. For example you’re missing a thumb, the neck is far too rigid for a woman, there’s no presence of a ribcage, and the pelvic area is anatomically improper, mostly the thigh connection. Plus with styles like this I think you’d benefit from clearer and more intentional overlaps, especially in the clothing.

To me that anon's lack of lines or definition look more like a stylistic choice then a lack of knowledge. It fits the style more to have minimal linework. your version would work too assuming you had the same thin brush but I don't think that's what they were going for. Looks like corporate memphis if it was actually good lol

I would try to add in a 3rd pastel color in the background to avoid the white void

You know, I'm actually a really jelly guy when I see people better than me, but what you're doing there goes beyond that. I can't force myself to feel jealous. The time you spent on it, the detail and love in displaying the emotions, it's fucking beautiful man. There's something warm and chunky in it that pic that trample any kind of venomous resentment I could drool out to defend my ego from the feeling of inadequacy.
This is actual art dude, it inspires me beyond what's displayed on the picture, and you are integral part of it
Like, wait a second, so social media drones get invested this way, albeit in much more simplistic terms since they're fucktards, by the perceived figure of the "artist" and having their stumpy emotions mirrored in the art?

The guy on the ground blends into it a bit too much, and the walls have a very repeating texture, it could do with some more hierarchy in the shapes to make it less distracting and lead the eye back towards the subject(s). The subjects themselves are sick though, not a bad piece at all.

Some things I was trying to do in this piece:

1. Hatching is getting better, but I'm still not sure if I'm spacing the lines far or close enough.

2. I'm making my own texture brushes, and I used one of them in the background. I know I didn't cover the outlines with the texture brush well. I don't know if the character in the work should also have texture as well.

3. This work is supposed to be monochromatic, with the value being rendered using hatching. I don't know if this is a good combination for the aesthetic appeal of this work.

4. The leaves on the background don't really look like leaves in my opinion, even though the contour shape of those leaves are correct. Maybe I'll add the veins and sticks of the leaves next time to make them look more obvious.

Hatching is just to imply shading/form/direction of movement/lighting the line width is up to you depending on what you're going for

Using texture brushes is good but usually combining with hatching is a bad idea and creates an inconsistent look, makes the viewer subconsciously think (why are some things shaded with textures and other things shaded with hatching?)

You have some lighter greens on the leaves so technically not all values are done by hatching in this piece, the shapes are not appealing but they definitely read as leaves.

I think you should work on drawing photos of people in different angles. Hatching in my opinion is just another style of rendering, you can't make up for a shaky foundation with good shading/hatching (but keep it up the hatching lines look good)

You didn’t look at some Greek pottery for reference? I suppose just for inspiration rather than 1:1 copy. Step one is forcing yourself to see pieces through to the end. It’s debatable how much a beginner should spend doing this. But I imagine you want to, so why shouldn’t you? It’s really just mileage and experience, being critical of yourself, and learning from your mistakes.

Beyond studies, I’m sure you sketch. So look at some of yours for inspiration, maybe a character design you like, maybe a sketch page had a cool building or some tree you doodled in the corner, so you incorporate that. Sketch out some thumbnails, have some balance and and points of interest for the viewer. I don’t do this enough, but the final composition always benefits when I plan, even a little. Sketch, ink/color. Refine, but step back and look at the work as a whole so you don’t get lost in the weeds. Sleep on it (literally). Flip it, mirror it. Know when it’s as good as it will get, that attempting to add or modify is yielding a negative return, and you squeezed out as much personal creativity from yourself through the piece.

Hi Anon, really fun, ambitious composition! Great little nudge on thinking a bit about the storytelling with the shadow on the attack beam too.

Did a quick overpaint/redraw on top. My colours are very muddy and sloppy here, but hopefully get across some ideas. Basically think a bit about contrast/values when you are drawing or painting. You want to use contrast to build your composition and draw attention to the action, while also 'grounding' the viewer. A shadow is very dramatic, and can help tell someone where the light is coming from and what the form of an object is.

Now for drawing. Don't be afraid to cut out certain parts of your characters and zoom in the action a little! It creates tension and makes the viewer feel like part of the scene. Push and exaggerate the poses more! Especially in a scene like this where we're bracing for impact. I'd probably have chosen a different pose, because I found this one difficult too, so I didn't get it quite right either. I could have gotten much more energy in that hammer swing too.

Now, onto overlaps. I tried staying faithful to your general composition, so I didn't move the character too much, but don't be afraid to make obbjects overlap more, like the kitten thing over the dinosaur etc. It helps create depth and increase the relation between objects.

I've always wondered something about your process, most of the time you post your initial sketch for a painting with the rough line art and basic color blocking, how do you get to that stage?
Like do you have an idea of what the painting will look like when starting it and you just draw it out or do you do a rough thumbnail that you then draw on top of and add colors onto?
