Any tips to draw furries in animation?

>> No.6989065

>>6989049
I'm not aware of anything that would make furries an exception to typical animation principles. If you're wanting to avoid classic processes of drawing frames of animation, rigging (like flash animation) or Live2D might be something to look into. Depending on what you're trying to do, though, you'll still need to draw body parts in various angles/poses that you can seamlessly transition to when moving the characters around so they aren't too stiff. Hopefully another more experienced anon can help better on this, but here's a resource covering animation principles you might find useful:

this is gonna sound silly but whats your color process? Im trying to learn coloring but arent ready to get into heavy shading/lighting stuff. I like coloring thats more that kind of speed. 3-4 basic colors and then maybe a "protect alpha" click or so.

>> No.6989197

>>6989186
Nta, but to get solid harmony between colors for flats, you should look for shades that are of close or matching value. Its also something you need to learn at some point later for shading anyways.
Value being the general brightness of a color, but it normally isn't 1:1 with locations on your color picker, the saturation of a color can change perceived brightness, on a color by color basis. You can train to recognize by eye, or use grayscale correction layers/effects to double check.

>> No.6989580

It's not strictly true. The kemono style isn't really based on animal anatomy, it's basically just anime characters with big, cute hand "paws" and a stylized :3 face. But if you want to draw more western style anthros with dog legs and heads and stuff, then a solid grasp of animal anatomy certainly helps, and learning any form of anatomy reinforces good fundamentals and habits, so you may as well.

ITA, just away from my PC. Coloring has always been a sore spot for me so I probably don't have the best guidance.

Set up your work files to allow for flexibility. If all your color is on one layer it becomes really difficult to do tonal corrections. It's worse if you have gradients. Keeping your colors on separate layers can be tedious but it allows you to test out different colors with ease.

As lame as it sounds, when you're learning its best to do a trail by error until you find some colors that look nice.

Also try not to use the fill tool. It loves to leave gaps and attach to your line art. I use an inverse mask on the empty space around the subject and color that in manually.

>>6989197's advice is good. Most of color theory comes down to value. If you can understand value then picking attractive colors will become easier. I can do it by eye but will also use a grayscale view sometimes.

Twitter's absolute garbage now. If you're not established (and even if you are), good fucking luck. That said, don't let the numbers game get to you. It'll just discourage you in the end, and you shouldn't stop drawing just because Twitter sucks.

I finished that Pete art I was making. Share your critiques.
I still remember that anon who said it was "childish" because of the subject matter and compositional choices, and while I don't agree, I understand just where he's coming from. It's not as dynamic as it could be. Also, I had a hard time making the image symmetrical, even using the mirror method, because of the lack of dynamism i.e. it's not from a 3/4ths view and is eye level rather than some kind of worm or birds eye view.
That being said, I'm still proud!

Indeed. I can understand if the subject is in front of you, but the character here is so static, that it looks like you have never heard of 1 point perspective.
Look at the feet. I can see just a bit of the top. It's too much foreshortened, like my point of view is almost at the groud.

You did better with inking. I see that you are using a white color too

Looking a little improved, you should keep using references of the species you want her to be based on while taking notes of other art styles from other users too so that way you can figure out a way to hone-in a new art style of your own. I definitely recommend checking out the resources in the OP here, especially this one here as it'll give you a great view as to how the headshape looks in 3D when designing.

I find front 3/4 for snouts only looks weird when you make the snout too long and don't change the skull to compensate. Dogs' skulls aren't perfect spheres, for example, they're totally different from people, so different rules apply. Also cheek fluff, like you've got down in the lower middle, hides a lot of uncanniness. You could always practice drawing some literal dogs, or something a bit more Disney-style. You know, like Robin Hood. Wink.
If you're going for a kemono style, you almost don't ever need to draw the snout except in profile. At most you need to occlude one eye a bit.

Glad you're still enjoying the subject matter. All the sketches are nice, but I like your dragons.

You're spot on, I'm just doing ball+cube so far. I remember seeing cat heads being assimilated to some kind of pyramid.
Kemono seems easier to approach since I already do weebshit. Kinda wanna draw Rouge or something similar if I keep at it with the furry stuff.

Are you mistaking line pressure with line weight? Line weight isn't something automated. You have to go over it manually to add, you know, weight. I guess you CAN add weight as you ink lines, but it's usually much better when it's done as a separate step; that is, adding extra weight exactly where you want it, and to a degree you want it, without relying on a single line stroke to communicate it.
It looks like that's what you've done though (and it does look much better, I think), so I'm not sure what you meant by "turned on".

While it might not look any better to you, i think the weighted forms feel much more interesting, and give me more information about what you're drawing.
Also I have an idea about why your drawing feels off: I am able to see the top of the head and the top of the frilly neck thing, suggesting the horizon line is above your character. Despite this, the tops of the feet are nearly hidden. I see the horizon line around the thighs of the bear if I start looking at the bottom, and see the bear with the horizon line above the head if I start looking at the top.
The perspective is ambiguous.

just be more social, go on discords, chat with other artists and they'll retweet it
eventually you'll attract the attention of artists with bigger followings and you'll get huge boosts
I got to 18k followers that way just drawing my non-furry OC, and I don't think I'm more skilled than you are

Hey guys... I need help finding a artist who might've posted their art here. They had a twitter that was like 80% their lizard oc in fantasy/medieval settings and 20% commissions, really good art, mostly lineart pieces, I don't think they were sfw. I know that doesn't narrow it down a whole lot but I'm kind of at a loss of where else I can ask for help lol. I know you guys like niche stuff so maybe someone here knows what I mean, and happy new year anons!

imo, there isn't a "best" resource, just "what's best for you". Experiment to find what clicks. The following is from my own research/experience for the general learning path, though I encourage other anons to correct me or add on if I miss anything here:

1. Work on gesture drawings to help you push your poses and understand what you can and can't do with the body. You can use sites like Quickposes or Sketch Daily Reference for ref images.

2. Start with simple anatomy and construction when first starting out. Learn the underlying skeleton, where the bones are visible under the skin for depth (collarbone, knees, elbows, scapula, etc.), the general muscle groups, and how those are shaped at different angles. It helps to study individual body parts first , how they connect to one another, and then build those into a full figure. You can graduate to more detailed anatomy later once you think you're ready for it, since there's just so much to learn.

3. To draw from imagination, you need to draw from refs first, which you should mostly be doing regardless of your skill level (even pros look up refs when they're not 100% sure of something). By drawing from refs, you build up your mental library so you can call upon it once you become more adept at drawing. This also means you'll need to grind figures in as many different poses as you can for the variation.

4. Start learning and incorporating perspective into your work. A lot of the best dynamic illustrations really push perspective at interesting angles to make the pieces fill more lively. To start off, it's suggested to just keep things to 1, 2, and 3 point perspectives, as 4+ is much harder. Grids and boxes are your friends here to keep the proportions and orientations correct.

Sticking strictly to furry artist. The first one that comes to mind is Dr.Comet. I always liked not only how toned his furries are but also how comely and somewhat alluringly ethereal they are at times. Definitely the one furry artist I draw upon when it comes to inspiration.
The second is Jay Naylor and Iskra. I really liked both of them too and I occasionally use them a references at times Third and special mentions are Butterchalk and Adam Wan. Both have their flaws(specially Wan) but they are just so good all in all.

I think before you work on foreshortening you should make sure you understand the anatomy you're working with. That leg anatomy doesn't make much sense; her foreleg just kind of blends into her metatarsals (or whatever the dog equivalent is called). I say this as someone who appreciates good paws from time to time. If you want people to really enjoy your work, your feet have to be on point.
For a first attempt though it's quite good. Just needs tightening up!

maybe a really dumb question, but if I want to do illustrations of furry characters, should I be drawing furry characters first, or should I start off with normal humans and then incorporate the furry parts later? This is a complicated question. If you're drawing anthropomorphic characters, you need to understand human anatomy. Depending no how animalistic you go, you'll also want to understand animal anatomy. Then you need to understand how to blend the two.
I would say human anatomy is more important (since if you're drawing in a cute style, you can always get away with a :3 face), and then supplement that with whatever specific parts you need, like digitigrade legs, or paws, or hooves or whatever. Skulls are important to study, too. Generally you can draw a basic human marionette for form, and then fill it in with the other things, but there's no way of getting around having to learn a lot for furry art.

What's been giving you trouble with legs? It might help to understand that all mammalian legs share roughly the same construction.

Missed this last question. Basically, it's the shape of the calves and elongated feet, how they're proportioned, and then the smaller details like the pads and whatnot. I've seen a lot of artists do different proportions, usually it's like:

1. Normal thighs and calves, just feet are elongated
2. Normal thighs, calves are about 1/2 to 2/3s their normal size, and then the feet are elongated, sometimes more so to make up for the smaller calves.

When I look at others' pieces, I can see how the anthro feet work and they make complete sense, but when I try they're just off-putting.

Yeah, I struggle drawing legs and when trying a difficult perspective, it looks awful.

>her foreleg just kind of blends into her metatarsals
Had to google those words to understand what you meant lmao, maybe I should read a bit of anatomy.

I mean this in the best of ways, but it's probably just a skill issue. Every artist goes through that phase where they KNOW how to draw something, but the actual act of drawing eludes them. Keep practicing and studying and you'll get it eventually. Without seeing your work, it's hard to offer more specific advice.
There's no "right" way to do them though, you'll have to decide what you like based on what appeals to you. A dog leg will carry with it different anatomy than a human leg with a stylized paw as the foot. It all depends on where they put their weight. I'd really recommend learning to draw horses, or at least their legs. The knowledge will carry over to a ton of other subjects.

No offense taken. If it weren't a skill issue, I'd probably be drawing them already. As for current examples, picrel was a study attempt I quickly dumped after having several hours long frustration with the legs. I moved and adjusted their proportions a ton and nothing felt right at all. Thanks again for the advice and refs.
