What are your thoughts on Jujutsu Kaisen character designs? Would you consider it to be one of the best shounen manga in general when it comes to this specific factor?

JJ is peak fiction but it's character designs are not particularly the strongest in the genre. I think Bleach oozes more style. One Piece characters are goofy but have a lot of exaggerated character to them. Even shows like My hero do the wear and tear on the character's body better.

Gege's character designs are really solid but they aren't all that unique especially early on. It kinda fits the modern day aesthetic though, it's hard to go full jojo and believe that the characters live in a world that's just our world with an extra underbelly of curses to it.

Can someone tell me the appeal of this series and why seemingly lots of teenagers all over the internet regard it as some sort of modern masterpiece?
Even with manga I'm not a fan of like AOT I could at least see the appeal of storywise, but JJK is literally just another shounen with ADHD pacing that focuses on fights over everything else to me.
And for the record I'm not an elitist or anything, I mainly read non-action seinen manga, sci-fi series and chill stuff like Aria or Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou so I'm probably not even the target audience of most shounen anymore at this point.

Been a fan of anime for over 15 years and I still can't figure this out. It's generic shonen slop. It has good animation, but that's about all it has going for it. I'm probably just not into shonen.

From an outside perspective, I also don't watch much ankme in general, they're solid designs but I qouldnt go as far as to saying they're the best I've seen. To this day, I think Akira Toriyama is unmatched in both making unique and distinct designs but also memorable ones while also being versatile. DB and DBZ, regardless on how you feel about them have very unique and distinct designs that are very memorable to me.

I mean there's nothing really special to it, It's just current generational flavoring. Just how it goes. Dragon ball, one peice, naruto, hxh, attack on titan. It doesn't need to be a masterpiece, just needs a few really good/good enough qualities that the current younger generations can really identify with for it to become a culturally relevant touchstone. If i had to guess, i'd say jjk is popular mainly because of it's exuberant fight scenes and the power fantasy in its "autistic powers" worldbuilding.

>> No.6982113

>>6981942
Gege is good at designing characters that look unique from each other but look bland and boring in isolation. They don't really tell a story like a good character design should. Gege just draws what he thinks would look cool or stylish and reduces the amount of details as much as possible because he can't be arsed to draw anything complicated repeatedly. That's why most of the characters wear extremely simple to draw clothes that look rather generic on their own. He doesn't give a fuck about designing characters, worldbuilding, writing a good story and great art-quality. He only cares about drawing cool fight scenes and how to get to the next one as soon as possible as well as writing his needlessly complicated power system. Everything else comes secondary.

The only reason jjk is popular is because braindead zoomers get a hard-on from muh sakuga-fight-scenes and because fujos would sacrifice a family member to get railed by Gojo and Toji.

On a side note, I should capitalize on this and draw more hot men. Anyone got experience with catering towards female coomers instead of male ones as an artist?

>They don't really tell a story like a good character design should
I feel like this is meme advice. Look at any of the gold-standard character designs (you can even choose some yourself instead of going with my examples) and try and tell me even a single one of them "tells a story" at all. What "story" does Luffy, Naruto, Goku, Gon and so on tell with their designs? Spiderman, Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, the TF2 cast... what storytelling is there in these designs? Where is this "a good character design tells a story" wisdom come from exactly, when so many iconic designs do no such thing?
>Gege just draws what he thinks would look cool or stylish and reduces the amount of details as much as possible because he can't be arsed to draw anything complicated repeatedly.
That's pretty much character design 101: come up with a cool concept, and simplify it. Reproducibility is a crucial part of character design -- you're going to be drawing them a lot, so don't make it harder than it needs to be. Bonus points if it's easy for other people to draw them too.

dude, i don’t know, but almost across the board all the popular shounen manga have mind blowingly wonderful character designs, ‘specially the classic ones. each chara is always so unique and memorable even if i read one chapter in a shounen jump, i’d still remember those characters from that moment over a decade later. can say that of almost no concept arty character designs, ever. only rare finds from my favorite artists. those manga artists, specially the ones with series featured in ‘jump, are very often pretty much gods of chara design, when it comes right down to it. to me, at least. i haven’t even read manga since i was a kid, and it still blows me away.

Luffy looks like a guy that lives near a beach or on a boat, which is fitting because he is a pirate.
Naruto is dressed like a stylized ninja and incorporates elements of his fox powers in his hair and makeup.
Goku is literally dressed like a martial artist.
Gon's outfits tend to vary but his design reflects the current state he's at. Green simple clothes as a kid, etc.

>> No.6982778

>>6982764
Something tells me "the design tells a story" isn't supposed to mean "the outfit they're wearing reflects their environment/occupation", because there's way better ways to phrase that if so. Like "the design shouldn't contradict the character" or something.
You have a fair point with Naruto, but IMO it's a bit thin. Those elements aren't exactly spelling anything out to the viewer -- if anything I'd argue the closer element to being a "story" with Naruto's design is his blonde hair/blue eye reflecting his status as an outcast within the village. That said, I asked that you point out one and I'd say that counts, so fair enough. I still think it's meme advice though, as I'm struggling to think of anything about any of the other character's designs that tell us much of a "story".

Thinking more about it, "the design tells a story" feels more like advice for costume design for tv/film than broader character design. In the context of film and tv, the outfit absolutely can tell a sort of story; eg we know Arthur Dent is an ordinary dude woefully out of his depth and ill prepared for his space-faring adventure because he's dressed in a bathrobe the entire time. It tells us, even if we missed the start of the movie (or tv show, whatever) that he was plucked out of his life before he could even get dressed that morning.
I feel like that kind of storytelling just isn't as relevant for comics and animation. It can be, but it rarely is, possibly because it's just a little bit too subtle to read well in an illustrated medium.

I don't know anything about this anime other than its name, so it's the first time I'm seeing the designs.

If these are official, WHAT A STEAMING PILE OF DOGSHIT.
Looks like Koreanslop for women.

Naruto had a generally ugly roster of women, but at least the designs were distinctive and the guys would mostly look decent.

These have nothing to remember.
Maybe the last one, because of the twintails at the top, but that's a low bar.

That woman in black with the axe is extremely offensive to me, not only is thee design boring, these proportions are extremely chunky and ugly, she looks as graceful as a pig.

Not to mention the girl to her left is clearly traced.
