Post characters for discussion, critique, or share resources on character design/ worldbuilding.

----Rules----

1. This is exclusively for sharing and critiquing designs, lore, and writing of characters and worlds.

2. Art trades should be directed to OC redraws. Do not post work expecting fills and do not draw characters in the hopes of getting returns.

3. If you are going to ask for critique, post critique. Make it actionable and constructive, as in fixes to shape, color, or other design/lore elements.

4. This thread is NOT associated with any discord servers, and never will be. Any person shilling a "official" or "unofficial" discord server should be ignored.

You're gonna hate me for this but unironically I just drew a lot, on and off over the years when things got busy with classes and work etc but a lot of doodles and years of making up characters.

For drawing heads one thing that sorta helped me push pretty far ahead of where I was this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg

The thing is, this was just my path but I never really got into drawing fanart or other characters very much, I've mostly done copies of human photography rather than other artwork. Nothing wrong with fanart and I believe your drawing skill is just the combination of what you practice every day so if you only practice anime heads you'll get better at those no doubt but I think fundamentals and creating your own shortcuts and abstractions will always be more honest and lead to better work than copying the simplifications that other people have done. I have done a few style copy challenges though but never a 1 to 1 mostly just seeing if I can create x character in someone elses style to see if I can bring both things together and add to my tool belt. The main thing I'd do is draw things you enjoy and separate study/improvement time from just fun drawing/doodling time. If you struggle at something practice that and you'll get better, one example is 3/4 head view or weird angles. I'de look up photos and do timed practices where you try to get the idea, then one where you take as much time as you like to make it look as realistic as possible, but in my experience I've only ever been able to look at the same drawing for 3-4 hours before calling it done and doing something else. Up to you to figure out the weaknesses and how to practice them but photo reference, and construction from your brain is your friend after you build up those skills.

Alright I'll keep that in mind, so far I've just been trying to learn anatomy, and honestly it's kind of been overwhelming. Just gonna have to grind those in between

Lel, i know my feral ranting will be ignored but i am bored rn and don't have a pencil with me. These threads and /ic/ as a whole breed egotistic, angry, artists who crab due to their lack of understanding of art, a lot of the people here don't get that art is in the eye of the beholder, and that its not very objective, while yes there is a difference in techincally good and techincally bad art both can be enjoyed. The oc threads seem to have a really bad case of crabs, mainly due to the fact that a lot of people but their sweet and blood into making their oc, to these people it is a sort of extension to them, ans for them to be not drawn or told it is bad causes anger, this makes them bitter to nu artists, and makes them want to find a reason to hate other people. I remember when the utam shit wad posted on the thread a month back, and a lot of people were glad they had a excuse to hate them, i find this odd, to be in such contempt of someone for little reason is quite irrational. As for me i can get it, altough id argue that i am a victim of the environment i grew up on and that i am better nowadays since i post and get my validation for other communties. But enough about me, another symptom i see of these people is a heighten sense of greatness in their art, while its good to be cofident in your art it becomes a when hindrance you are blinded by it, i remember getting my art called bad(objectively true in most cases) when the critquer saying this was around the same level of me, and couldn't even draw the male form, only simplified female forms. An example of a Marasmusi Noble, Pig Shepherd, Servant, and Pig.
Nobles are few and far between, and because of this, rare resources and commodities can be generously exchanged between them. Representing the eight tribes of the Marasmusi: Geda, Oshtoreth, Hemibrig, Washkar, Embril, Zeshomah, Thyrthrmil, and Cumraith, most nobles wear the emblem of their tribe proudly upon their apparel. Here, the symbol lies on the shoulder of their fashionable but unpractical cloak. After generations of slavery and loss of culture, the Marasmusi have taken to appropriating the now enslaved Mole peoples' aesthetics and patterns into their own clothing.
Pig Shepherds, as their name implies shepherd Marasmus SIlver Pigs as a source of food and leathers. Pigs, unlike many other mammals, can adapt to any environment and eat virtually anything, like giant rats. But unlike rats, they live much longer and can provide a stable source of food and leather for clothing. Pig Shepherds' clothing is simple in design but tough for the underground environment they live. Covered almost completely, the thick leather padding helps protect them from the heat of the lava floes, treacherous terrain, and vicious monsters around them. Since many Marasmus plants like to grow near lava floes thanks to the abundant carbon in the air, warmth of the lava, and nigh unlimited source of healthy earth, shepherds naturally spend lots of time around the heat and carbon-rich air. Many adopt the use of masks, with cloths to help filter the air. Their hats, too, made of straw in the common Marasmusi snail hat shape has a flap on the back to protect the wearer's hair and neck while the straw weave of the cap allows heat to escape easily.
Ironic for a once enslaved people to have indentured servants, servants are generally criminals or the children of debtors, taught to serve nobles and their households either until the sentence is complete or the debt is repaid.

Continued: Nobles often deceive their servants in an effort to keep them forever. Servants often wear simple garb with a taut top which makes foreign object like weapons difficult to hide, and a torc with the symbol of the swirl to let others now they are servants. A servant's clothes might also include the symbol of the tribe or the sign and information of the noble they belong to.
Marasmusi pigs are thick-skinned, furred pigs, with long ears to whisk away heat. Generally able to eat anything, the pigs trot around in groups, often corraled by a shepherd. Some pigs are also trained to sniff out rare underground plants similar to how real-world pigs can be taught to sniff out truffles. A pig's skin is often used for clothing and padding, their meat and bones for food, and their hooves and teeth for jewelry. Some shepherds also milk their pigs with mixed results.
The following image is of a Ewe Cow, a breed of bovine exclusive to the underground world of Marasmus, with their shorter legs, shovel-shovel and three-toed hooves, and baleen-like teeth, Ewe cows are exceptionally well-adapted to foraging through rocks and climbing cliffsides where they live. Additionally, their thick hair helps against the cold as well as insulates and offers some protection from magma floes.

Bone Cleaners of Marasmus:
When Marasmusi die, their remains are prayed for by their family. After their final goodbyes, the body is given over to the bone cleaners, Marasmus’ version of morticians. Here, the body is released of all blood via a tube inserted into their jugular and pumped until as much blood as they can get out has been removed. Organs are removed through a horizontal incision across the lower torso. Marasmusi see no value in the organs so they are generally disposed of unless someone requests otherwise. The body is then shaved of as much flesh as possible using ceremonial knives, starting with the right limbs and moving clockwise, saving the torso for last.
The Bone Cleaners then remove the head and boil the remaining flesh from the the post-cranial body in three-legged cauldrons. The head is then plastered in a death mask of their likeness and Lyme is used to fill in any gaps in the mask and to reduce stench.
After the bones are all cleaned and removed of blood and any other dirt, they are interred in shared tribal catacombs, though Elites may have enough power to have their own private tombs. The heads, still in the death mask is put in front of the tombs as a way of identifying which grave is which.
In Marasmusi culture, death should be treated with solemn respect. As skeletons are the only things that remain after the decomposition process, Marasmusi see the skeleton as pure and removed from all impurity. This is why the bones are cleaned. The bone cleaners themselves emulate skeletons by covering themselves in white powder, being clean shaven, and wearing nothing but a loincloth. It is also why blood and other possible body fluids are drained so carefully, as to not spill and stain anything pure. Bone cleaners also must keep a good reputation with the tribe and are usually some of the older and most respected people in the group.

I hoped you enjoyed reading about this particular group of peoples in my world. :] Happy holidays.

Since the thread invites both critique and criticism, I will post a couple of strips from a storyline extending over 180 pages and ask for examination. Not of the art,per se,nor of the clumsy arrangement and orchestration of the panels and walls of exposition. What I want to know, and could never guess at since I never received feedback from the 3800 unique visitors per month average my site had,was this:

The Writing. The World Building Through Inference. Can people link their answers to each strip, and in a sentence, summarize what you think went on in it? I want to know if I am delivering the facts adequately, and if the ideas behind the dialogue are getting comprehended.

In short,am I doing a proper job Writing This Stuff Up.

I want to make a isekai comedy about 2 bros suplexing the forces of evil in a generic fantasy world with a party of characters.

The point isn't an adventure, but a slice of life that can be done in 8 panel doses to tell jokes, lore, or action. Not delving too deep into any of these genres.

The characters are meant to be one-dimensional, yet charming tropes cobbled together to interact with one another as friends.
>Childhood friends, Dudebros who like partying and fighting
>Magical Kuundere Homunculus girl
>Loyal Borzoi Swordsdog
>Paladin Princess
>Old Disco Bard
>Gyaru Healslut
>Skeleton Warlock CEO

Originally I was making this to use the title, "Chadicus and Bradicus and the Magical Homunculus", but I got some ideas about other things.

A question I have is, before I start should I make a bible before I start and try and make sure the shadow identities are there in a line-up, or should I just slam and jam and work this out on the fly? I want this to be a continuous project I can work on between work and sleep, so low stress.

Here's my protagonist for the novel i'm currently working on which i'm planning to name “How the dead live”, Olivia Suzuhara

Olivia, a spectral entity trapped in limbo due to a lack of proper funeral rites, is a lost spirit in a world where these lingering lost souls get their bodies reconstructed from the collective unconscious, turning themselves into "Phantoms." The pieces from the collective unconscious their bodies are made of are known as “gestalt" which are like fragments that empower them with unique spells. As phantoms utilize gestalt, their bodies deteriorate, pushing them closer to a final demise.

The phantoms, acting as agents for the gatekeepers of heaven and hell, serving as modern-day reapers, tasked with guiding souls to their ultimate destinations.

As for Olivia, she's essentially a phantom who's tasked to kill her former lesbian lover, who had left her abruptly for no reason at all. She later then discovers her former lover is actually a phantom herself and she grapples with either having to kill her or not.

As for the antagonist, Her name is Viktoriya Sokolov.

She's a phantom who was once feared as the “Russian grim reaper” after her brutal time serving in the Russian military during ww2 with her unconventional method of wielding a giant machete. She became a phantom after she then died standing atop of 100 corpses in the battlefield and she was never given a funeral due to her breaking multiple geneva conventions and she became nothing more than a russian urban legend, like the grim reaper itself.

She's meant to be a Jason Vorhees like character, with a mixture of Toji Fushiguro

She was tasked with killing Eva Monroe just like Olivia and the two crossed paths which then now fuels the conflict of the story itself.

As the story continues in the novel, you get to see the duality between the two, mainly how Viktoriya who had finally lived after becoming a phantom herself, to how Olivia sees herself as truly dead after becoming a phantom. The two would have a lot of similarities but a lot of differences as well so yeah.

Idk if anything I've read about is interesting enough, desu. Or idk if it's any good to begin with, but if you've reached this point, then thanks for reading it all :)

Trying to make a ghost mascot character. Here's what I have so far. His name is Caddy. I'm trying to go for a "fat & funny ghost best friend" vibe.

I really like these guys, but the proportions are too aimless. Consider redrawing these characters with more simple shapes and a clear silhouette. Something like picrel in terms of proportions and shape language. Plus the armor design seems too derivative of saiyan armor.

I like the skull sitting more at the top, isntead of having a hunch, because then he looks more helpless/awkward, which is cute.
Like a little guy tucked in a blanket and waiting for his turn to play the video-game.
I also like that ribcage with the collarbone and no line divisions.

The version with the glows at the bottom don't look appealing, make the glow less granualr, bigger waves to simplify it, otherwise it combines poorly with the fella's simplicity.

Correction: the skull doesn't have to sit at the top, it's more about the perception of the back. It can also be in the middle, but then it should look shallow, as if the skull were a face on the surface, rather than a fully separate sphere that creates the idea of a neck/hunch.

taking a look at your work and Ill admit that it gets kind of cluttered but I can pick out specific things like clothing, bits of machines, body parts are the easiest to pick out so im using them as a guide line. The abundance of words can be daunting and personally I tend to skim-read things but still understand the content, if the content pulls me in then I tend to read the whole thing proper. I guess being an oldfag myself, your way of making indie comics is like looking into the past some 30+ years ago or hell early 2000's comics that have this specific feel to it. Im no expert myself but if there is one thing I can tell you and you probibly herd this over and over again by now but 'less panels'. Mostly to give your images more room to be seen and not be completely covered in the text boxes. Unsure if this gives you more work to draw out those intently blank areas or not because I can understand if your not willing to do that but that's all I got.

As for how I personally feel about your comic, it feels more like a 'sit down and really emerge yourself in the world despite how technically intimidating it might be'. You do have alot of heart put into the work. Not everyone would take the time to sit down and enjoy it but feels like that's not much of a concern for you. You know what your content is about and probably fine with who might like or dislike it. Im rambling now, tl;dr 'fucking looks baller man'
