to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

in my first attempt above i was subconsciously confining everything. meaning gradually as i was putting in more lines the proportions got messed up.

imho:
the pose is fine but it feels very cramped with the rectangular composition, especially the wings(?) would like some more space to extend, or maybe overlap with the body, right now it's very flat
the shoes are a bit kids'drawing vibe, copying reference of nice shoes is the way to go. The clothes also lack some detail, like buttons, zippers, patches, stitching, prints...
the face/hair are OK but a bit wonky, you should spend more time and effort on it because it's very central in the piece

Schizophrenic drawing style where I'll temporarily suspend all knowledge of proportions to (temporarily) speed up my drawings to get more mileage in. Other times I will draw way more slowly to try to nail proportions. I switch back and forth between the two regularly. Maybe that's what Nicolaides was referring to? So let me see if I got this right:
- Work on environments instead of casting lolis into the void.
- Utilize lighting (bounced and specular) to ground characters into said environment.
- Don't be afraid to go to 100% white as long as it's used sparingly.
- Higher dynamic ranges are more eye catching.
Welp, time to look up composition technique. Thank you.

Lighting is a bit dull, the hand holding the sword isn't very clear, you're using too many lines, if you wanna hatch try making the direction consistent like what you did for the armor. I would practice drawing some more figures as well since the pose/proportions feel a bit off but it's not too bad anon, PS armor with eyebrows is a strange choice

Watercolor is pretty fun. You can do the combopack of getting a couple of pallettes you like and couple them with the watercolor pencils, or try the watercolor pens. There's also the option of mixed media, where you're combining multiple forms in one project. You have versatility to add different types of texture and just overall convey different things. Just get creative, man. There's nothing quite like feeling the movement beneath your hands as you're putting everything together.

Colour pencils are fucking amazing if you know what the shit you're doing and don't buy trash.

Watercolour is great but takes a lot of trial and error to figure out what paper, what brand of colours and what brush works for you. Also getting the right amount of water right is an absolute bitch. Gouache can also be an option if you wanna have more opaque, matte liquid colours.

I for one have really started to dig alcohol markers, but don't bother with Copics, get Ohuhu or W&N pro markers. On mixed media paper, you can also combine them with watercolours and regular colour pencils too get fantastic results.

Of course, all of these take practice. And as for "takes forever" - watercolour, gouache and pencils do indeed take a long time to dry before adding other layers and colour large areas respectively, but the results are worth it.

I just have my shit set up in a couple of lidded bins, my brushes ready to go and hung up, and my watercolor paper off on my shelf. Get a little travel sprayer to rehydrate your paints, a microfiber towel for excess water, maybe a couple of paper towels, and a couple of jars of water (1 for rinse, 1 for adding clean water to the brush). Getting a separate pallette that has plenty of wells is cheap, you can prep it first with a melamine sponge (magic eraser) so that it doesn't just blorb up. Keeping oil pastels off to the side to work on the next part would probably be easier than fiddling with full-blown oil paints though. My patience is ricepaper thin though, so I don't fool with oil paints and all of the accoutrements that come with wanting to use them.

Gouache, more forgiving than watercolor or acrylic and cheaper than oil, doesn't need expensive paper like watercolor or canvas, just some stiff illustration board or bristol, that kind of thing. Hell you could use it on cardboard. You can reactivate it at any time with a bit of water if you want to make corrections (although this can also be a bad thing).

Here's a Professor Blook to throw on the pile. It's worse than the first few blooks I drew, probably on account of the awkward angle and slightly more complex facial structure. Could be worse, though; I'm not feeling the Loomis demoralization I've seen some /ic/ anons describe. Sorry about the line paper.
I had a little Sonic doodle I posted in another general that I was quite happy with the head on, but Sonic characters are a lot simpler than the blooks in terms of facial geometry. I'm gonna study more Loomis drawings to challenge myself.

my guess is the same reason western animation did, a change in technology made it so that the computer could automate some of the stuff for us. youll notice some anime in the 2000s will have some funny frames where characters in the distance look silly. i think the line weight style was influenced by the change in medium so the art style changed with it. It's like how we went from mickey mouse to calarts style pretty much. Now with better tech, we have more room to play around AND not work ourselves to the bone like with 80s/90s anime. just a hunch. also realistic anime still exists?

gradient maps basically "map" certain values to a color ( pic related ) working them in combination with opacity or any other layer type is fun.
maybe look into color theory too. i tend to always lean back on analogous or triadic colors. even in my terminator art is technically all analogous. the "green" in it is actually a greyish blue. The only deviating color is the red, but it still counts as analogous.

Any Tradanon's have any experience with inks?
I've been playing around a lot with a dip pen and brush pens recently and I ran into a problem with the winsor and newton gold ink I purchased, it being too viscous to really flow from the dip pen to be precise.
I load it up and I can't even make a single line properly, and if I overload the pen tip it just sticks to the paper in a single droplet instead of flowing evenly. (top right of the image near the forehead is a good example of this)
I ran into a similar problem with the white ink I use where I could just dilute and stir it a little to make it flow more appropriately, however that doesn't seem to work for the gold ink.

I can kind of make it work with a brush where I can actually use the ink for multiple strokes, but I would really like to make thin precise lines as well.

How to into gesture drawing?
I'm at the point in my first textbook where he teaches you to draw the human figure, starting with gesture.
Read the chapter multiple times, found a site called quickposes, did a bunch of timed 60-second gesture drawings.
Results were a mess and I have no idea if I'm learning/doing it properly. Feels by far the most abstract part of the book.

first off don't do 60 second gesture drawings, that's the dumbest thing to do when learning, you are too inexperienced to see the gesture in a minute. Anyone who recommends that is wrong. quick gestures are for those who already know what they are doing.
Do untimed gestures using CSI lines. Use long lines, use them scarcely (dont chicken scratch). You should spend the majority of time looking at the model (not drawing) and tracing the forms and gesture with your eyes, looking at landmarks, figuring out the perspective of the ribcage, pelvis, head, etc. Use the same image to to a gesture drawing, a box/form study, and any other approach to construction you might want to try. Don't go into too much detail, make your drawings look like the basic gestures you see in the book/chapter you're going through.
Do tons of these. Once your drawings are accurate, then you should move on to 60 sec drawings.

Hi anon. To do that type of hatching you need

>Pencil with a sharp tip,
>Angled surface to put your paper
>Very clear idea of the values you are trying to put in the drawing
>Patience. Lots of it.

This type of hatching is taught in almost all fine art ateliers and schools. Chinese and Russian fine artists like to use it a lot too.

But to make the clear look that they can achieve and that you want to make, you need to be careful with the handling of the pencil. That means no rubbing your hand or fingertips against the paper, no smudging.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onkFLQlQzdk&ab_channel=DrawingArtAcademy

This is an educational video to teach you how to hold the pencil in a way that helps you grow accustomed to making clear, long and short lines from different angles and positions.

And here is another youtube channel that uploads videos of fine art drawings that use this type of hatching.

https://www.youtube.com/@fineart-academy/videos

Hope this was of help, and remember to always keep your pencil sharp.

Forgot picture, sorry.

The angled surface to draw on is very important because drawing on a flat surface can cause a lot of pain early in your drawing career and an angled surface makes doing clear lines way easier.

The sudden change from drawing one way to another is a frustrating thing, it requires effort and lots of drawing using the correct position of the hand. If you get bored of it, keep drawing like you used to do but remember to keep practicing these new ways of drawing so that you won't become a mediocre artist who does sloppy lines.

I'm autistic, with ADHD. I can't focus on trying to get better at all or even come up with anything to draw without just giving up and going back to looking at my phone and doing something else.
I've legitimately never been able to commit myself to any serious hobby and have gotten lazy over the years with my only actual one which is writing and the only reason I'm good at writing is because I wanted people to be able to understand what the fuck I was saying and I wanted to write good stories because I thought I'd never be able to make them in a visual medium, but that's it. I've never been able to commit to a serious routine, schedule, or anything. I just sit in my room online doing basically nothing.
Everything I try doing looks so daunting and impossible. I tried learning Source Filmmaker as a teen and I gave up immediately because it looked too complicated. I tried learning how to make my own games in game maker, gave up immediately and never touched it. Even something like drawing just looks so complex and impossible. This is what it's like for everything I try doing.

I guess I got lazy with this one. I completely missed a line on the cheeks; I followed along with Loomis's construction, but I messed up the angles of the squares on the cheeks, and in my erasing to fix the mistake I inadvertently resorted to symbol drawing, so now the man looks gaunt in a way he shouldn't.
The eyes are higher than they should be, caused by my poor construction of the head's cross lines. I messed with the cross lines a lot, never being happy with the perspective, but I eventually figured, "I'm overthinking this, I need to get to the actual drawing and not just fucking around with the perspective for 20 minutes", and this is the result. I don't think the eyes are super incorrect, but the higher placement does make the man lose the mature and slightly grumpy air he exudes in Loomis's drawing. The relative thinness of the eyebrows also contributes to this.
The nose is also quite flat; it doesn't pop out in the way a nose should. I should have erased the lines leading from the bridge to the tip like Loomis did. The line on the man's right nostril leading to the tip is also out of whack with the perspective. Generally, I took Loomis's "blocky" approach too literally here on the nose.

The comparison here really is a "soulless vs soul" situation. I'll try to do better tomorrow. I got a sketchbook so this is the last ugly notebook paper drawing I do. Also I'm a newfag if it isn't obvious, so sorry if it's annoying for me to have written this long ass essay critiquing my own fucking blook lol

Good stuff. I recommend you read the first chapter of hampton's book (figure drawing: design and invention) to boost your learning.
Here what he outlines there: CSI, Asymmetrical lines, Timing, Rhythm, The key landmarks and forms. Really implementing them and not wasting lines. Also I recommend using lots of reference of people; don't copy the instructor's gestures by rote. Every line should describe something, that's the key.
Then go back to vilppu.
I attached a pic i made when I started hampton for reference.

lool. Start with keys to drawing by bert dobson. If you don't have the patience to truly see what you are drawing you won't improve. Then read the sticky. GL

nice, it's good to compare and note your mistakes but don't get bogged down on blooks though, keep moving through the book. Many newbs get trapped on blooks. Loomis' blooks look great because Loomis was a professional artist with solid fundamentals. Just take it easy, have fun and make sure to invent your own ones too.

Tried doing a head from imagination after 9 or so days of doing head studies out of frustration from how bad my heads were looking

it's far from good but it's better than what I was doing before I did the practices so I'm happy with it

It's not bad. You can use bold lines on foreground and think pencil stroke for back ground.

Don't rush. Pay more attention to the subject and analyze it slowly. Don't scribble. Every part is an opportunity for learning. Take it slow and steady and don't forget to take a break. Hydrate and stretch every hour.

Did you save your old drawings? Look at the oldest drawing and compare it to your latest drawing. You'll see the improvement.

I was gonna move on from them and draw my own stuff sooner, but then I figured that anything I came up with would always be simpler and easier to draw than Loomis's blooks, and that I should challenge myself by studying more of his. But, yeah, maybe I shouldn't think of it that way.
I think tomorrow I'll study the first few realistic faces in FWAP (which are supposedly super hard for beginners) and then draw some simple stuff, perhaps along with studying gestures which I haven't done at all yet.

I really like this edit. I'll take note, thanks! I will probably try to keep the colors close to the blue side of the spectrum that they are on, and keep this high contrast in mind

Hair is wrong, eyes too far apart, distance between ear and face too long, cheekbone should not be as prominent compared to jawline, nose bridge should be deeper, nose too small in proportion with forehead and mouth, mouth should jut out further

personal preference but I would add the sunglasses

i think its finally starting to work out
i know the values are still off but im adjusting them as i go
and theres a few mistakes but my answer to that is practice practice
the main thing is that i feel now that the brick wall is crumbling and that my approach is starting to work out. Faragasso clearly stated that he does not approve of using the Reilly method as a roadmap that you fill in with shading. i distanced myself more and more from the roadmap with the previous attempts and with this one its finally bearing fruits.
furthermore im using too much white in this, i will avoid using white next time

Any reccs for books to study for buildings and or landscapes? I am trying to assemble a portfolio to apply to a school and I feel like the biggest thing I need now is to make my pieces not just a character in an empty void.

you need some primer on perspective especially for any kind of architecture, nature is more forgiving. And then just refs/study I imagine. Various cg hack maybe, if you into this - shapes/bashing. other then that it just drawing/painting like anything else. atmospheric perspective but you do not need book on this, just awareness of phenomena.

I am completely stuck on this mind-numbing problem and I can't see how to fix it at all. The left hand is supposed to be playing with her hair but the arm is not making sense and the hand would be too small. Everything else looks good to me, is that just in my head? Is the entire pose a monstrosity that I'm blind to? This drawing is destroying me.

>> No.6976744

>> No.6976758

>>6976739
have you tried making the pose yourself? when i go to hold my hand there i either raise my shoulder far up and back, putting my forearm fully horizontal and my wrist bent far back, or keep the elbow dropped and just raise my forearm. regardless i think the current problem is that the forearm is too short, when raised and bent like this it should come a little in from the end of the deltoid where right now it's about half the length of the entire upper arm. you're also pointing the forearm exactly where you want the hand to play with the hair, not considering the backwards bend of the wrist that necessitates a lower forearm. rest of the pose looks fine, will improve massively with more studies of anime style, rest of the pose looks alright too, i think the ribcage could be pushed forwards more but don't fixate on that right now. keep going keep going

I know it's a copypasta and you're trolling, but it's scary how accurate this actually is. I also had zero discipline as a teen and tried many things (among others Source Filmmaker, making Half life 2 maps, etc.) but as you said you give up as soon as things get complicated or there is an obstacle you actually have to work through, and these moments of failure pile up making you defeated.

I don't have these problems anymore, but I say, if anyone has these problems then unironically get a job, i think it's a symptom of a life that is too easy (you're inside your room jerking off all day), if there are no outside pressure to actually get shit done and push through then it will be pretty hard to get disciplined by yourself when you're a coombrained TikTok scrolling failure.
