Does anyone have any tips on how to do messy yet appealing looking digital painting like pic related? Every time I've attempted it is just looks like shit.

I grabbed a random outfit off of pinterest then did a rough sketch and colours before realizing it was wayyy cleaner than the ones you put, so I tried roughing it up just using a pencil brush that I made too large to be comfortable. It's a neat style. I think I emphasized the shadows too much compared to the ones you posted, which have a more flat colouring.

I spent so long practicing how to draw clean straight lines that this is alien to me. My lines are stiff and sterile and this guy doesn't even connect them together. Is this what flow state is? I'm always calculating and measuring each line like a computer.

I completely winged it, the lineart you see on the left is the rough sketch that I just cleaned up by erasing the stray lines. For something this simple I just think about the limbs as tubes and go from there. This is kinda what my construction lines look like for stuff like this

That's why. Too clean and precise leads to stiff and boring, calculated artwork that leaves little for the viewer's imagination. Sketchy and incomplete artwork leaves the viewer's imagination to fill in the blanks
