6962076 No.6962076 [Reply] [Original]

The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6962079

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Noir Caesar is a scam bro, half the "indie manga" are just a nba player paying some poor writers and artists to make his ideas real. Another is remake of a Tezuka manga?? Like pluto. It has a kickstarter but it got canned. I dunno if it was ever approved of by tezuka productions but i doubt it. i hear they are trying to make a anime as well. The entire company is bankrolled by the money the dude makes off of basketball. From what i saw on the website they dont have much actually to their name besides helping other studios develop pilots of african american centric anime. One of their comics is written by the anituber ForneverWorld for fucks sake

Thinking about branching out and try my hand on making comic but I know little about the current state of the industry. Drawing untill now has been nust a side hobby for me. But I'm a writer who has self published several works without much success. At least partly because I refuse to follow the popular genres. In the literary world there are a few easy-mode genres outside of which there is little to no audience. What I want to know is whether unconventional stories (and I don't mean arthousery avant-gardeness, just not isekai, not formulaic romances, not erotica,...) would have any chances to succeed in comic form.

As for the skills required, I know making a comic is no easy task but I'm willing to improve and put in the effort. I was told by a working professional after showing my works that my anatomy is good enough for webcomic/manga. Probably doesn't mean much since I know some webcomics don't have a very appealing artstyle, but that at least implies I can start working on one right away instead of spending years to hone my craft first. I just want to know if there's any chances my works will go anywhere without only working in the constraints of one of a few narrow subsets of genres?

Trying to copy a really dense action panel and it made me realize that while the mangaka spends his week drawing the characters, his assistants are spending that same amount of time just tirelessly scratching speedlines on top of his drawings. Hours upon hours of scratching, by hand. It looks too perfect if I try to replicate it using digital rulers, so it has to be manual. Cant describe how mind numbing it is to do. Bless the assistants.

No but seriously. If you want to learn how to draw things like this, draw drawings of them. Remember, these are not real. Blur in real life looks nothing like it does in real life, and that's for the better, because in real life it just looks like the shutter of a camera fucked up. Can anyone ID the pen being used here? It doesn't smear against his copic markers which is a major problem for me so I want to give it a shot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg3_yvp6Ndo&list=PLGKvKm80iR1jc1PL2i4OWpSCam2eKrTNV&index=7

>> No.6967597

I'd like to continue drawing with Copics since I like the look and feel of them but if I can't figure out this smearing problem I'm gonna have to switch to water colors. I've learned that alcohol and water based inks don't mix, yet the water based Sakura Pigma Microns AND Copic multiliners both smear against my alcohol markers on marker paper in specific. Yet, my bold alcohol based sharpies do not.

My next steps are to switch to fountain pens and dipping ink which apparently don't smear from the videos I've seen, and my last resort will be to adopt multimedia paper, the cons being they don't hold liquid as long and will be harder to blend with, and the heavier paper will draw out more ink per stroke, but at least they won't smear as much, if at all.

>> No.6967605

You probably won't be able to find that one specifically, but if you search for "marker proof" or "alcohol proof" brush pens you should still be able to find what you want.

>> No.6967677

Just did a little experiment on a sheet of drawing paper which is lighter than mixed media at 70lbs but still gave me some good information. Long story short my pens *still* smeared on this paper despite it being an entire 50+ lbs HEAVIER than my marker paper, which tells me smearing ink isn't a matter of tools, but approach. Basically, fine liner ink will always drag under alcohol marker so if I want to continue with these tools I'll just need to start deliberately drawing within the lines or switch to water color paint and see how that fairs, which I might incorporate anyway.

Are you drawing Robbie Reyes or just a knock-off? kek
Anyway I do comic art too, I don't even try to make it look like their previous artist, but I tell writers that upfront. I draw in my own style and a mix of the features the character reference. If the writer doesn't like that then maybe he should have paid the original artist more
Even with regular art commissions, I expect that I'm hired because they like my artstyle, not because they expect an exact copy of someone else's art

So you can see the differences, that's good. Drop the image into your canvas and fiddle with your brush settings until you can get lines like that. But again, keep in mind you're comparing yourself to the very highest caliber.

>> No.6972391

>>6972384
>Is this a stylistic choice to make it easier for the reader to focus on the important parts of the page?
Yes. It's just about helping the readability of the sequence, so if you feel like it would be easier to read if you have a separation between the background and the characters then it's appropriate.
Personally, I feel like it's overdone a lot of the time. For example on that page, the 2nd panel on the 2nd page doesn't need it -- the characters would stick out from the environment just fine without it. On the other hand, there are cases where it is necessary, like the 3rd panel on the 1st page. I think a lot of the time, unless the character straight up blends into the background by mistake, it's down to personal preference.

>> No.6972405

>>6972384
Appeal and readability are important. It is imperative that your characters are easily and clearly identifiable from the background, unless you were going out of your way to camouflage them. That said, I personally think a white outline should be avoided if there is another way to show the character (change the background itself so that it naturally "highlights" the character, etc.).

I've seen too many panels where both background and character kind of mesh into a sort of blurry mix. That's no good, your reader shouldn't normally have to slog their eyeballs to identify what they're looking at.

A lot of artists, writers, etc. starting out are initially obsessed with trying to be original as possible, without realizing that virtually every single potential storytelling device has already been told or otherwise used at some point or another. We have approximately 8,000 years of recorded human writing, and people have been telling stories by word of mouth for even longer than that. First 6 pages of my Berserk modern AU comic. Never thought I'd be doing an office manga but here I am...

I know it's not clear from the sloppy sketches, but the events are:
>P1-3 Casca argues with Adon (Blue Whale Knights) over a deal and things get heated, she's grabbed by his goons
>P4-5 Gut's intro, he throws a goon out the window. They start negotiating again but Adon is now submissive
>P6 Scene change to back at the Hawks Company, establishing shot of the office and some dialogue with minor characters.

Areas I'm having trouble with is shot variety. I had an older comic I worked on a few months ago but that was plagued with issues where the shots were:
1. Always close, or too close. Basically just talking heads or busts
2. Always too similar even within the same page
I'm trying to counteract that by moving the camera around, a tip another artist told me was to try having at least a close, mid, and far shot in every page. Not sure if I did that enough.
Another is certain parts. Like P4 completely stumped me, I think I'll redraw it idk what I was doing there.

It's highly context dependant, that's why there aren't any guides for it. The panels on a page are determined by sense ot time, value, pacing, and even whether the page in question is about to be turned. It's just one of those things you have to hammer out more or less on your own and through a lot of trial and error.

There isn't anything in terms of general layout that is more "manga" versus, say, a western comic (regardless if that means an American comic versus a French one, etc.). As >>6976003 was saying, where the main difference is in, is where you have your timing, what is focused on, what is emphasized, and the pacing of it all.

Again, Making Comics by Scott McCloud is really good on specifically this issue. If you want to see a few blurbs on how a Japanese mangaka might take McCloud's general foundation and make it a little more Japanese in terms of storytelling techniques, there's a short chapter or two in Hirohiko Araki's Manga in Theory and Practice book.

Keep in mind, though, that having read both, I still feel that McCloud's book was about 300% more immediately practically useful in terms of planning out layout, etc. After all of this, it's still just trial and error. You're not going to make the "perfect" manga the first time - you've got to just get in there and get your hands dirty.

This premise seems interesting! The second page is the hardest to read; I'm assuming in the second panel on that page that she is seeing a vision of the entity that is possessing her, starting with her hand, but it's hard to tell at this stage when the visions start and when it flashes back to present. The third page is similarly hard to read in that I'm not sure where the "camera" is cutting to.
I'm assuming this will all be ironed out once you get to later stages of these pages. This has potential, though. I'm excited to see where this goes!

Not sometimes, all the times because nobody gives a shit about your work except you and there is not a pot of gold waiting for you at the top of your monitor screen ready to be plucked after you finish your work/drawing either. Making any kind of comic/manga (and most definitely anything beyond 3-4 panels) is a niche activity of a niche activity. It's already hard enough to get someone to break from the normie mold of "only consume, no make" and get them to dedicate themselves to actually draw something (let alone good). It takes another huge effort to make the jump into trying to drag everything together, kicking and screaming, into something that resembles a story with an actual plot/world.

How much do hentai mangaka make?

>> No.6979968

>>6979956
Which one? It depends on sales and other factors. Are they commercially published, or doujinshi? Which publisher? Are they relatively new authors, or industry veterans?
Doujinshi depends entirely on sales (maybe fanbox patronage too) so you can just look their works up and calculate how much they've made going off the sales (keeping in mind a lot of those were probably bought on sale).
For commercially published authors, they make a page rate that varies by publisher and by their seniority. They also get paid royalties -- typically 10% on print sales (I don't know where to find numbers on print sales though other than self-reporting from the publisher) and splitting the digital royalties 50-50 with the publisher (after the platform takes their cut).
If their work has been adapted then they (probably? I have no experience with this bit) got paid a lump sum for the adaptation rights and that's it. I have no idea how selling figures/merch of their characters factors into their profits, if it's even profitable at all.

Some authors make money hand-over-fist, some struggle. Same as all forms of authorship.

Working on fixing your weaknesses is how you wind up with correct but unremarkable artwork. Instead, focusing on your strengths is how you wind up with flawed but stylish and memorable work.

i mainly mean there were details sitting out in the void, that would prove a challenge for the 3d printers, for example on the birds hands, instead of being one connected object of hand to staff, the modeller had visible gaps between the palm and the shaft, meaning that in its raw state at the scale we were wanting to produce at, the 3d printer had WAY more chance of resin pooling in places that had already cured, losing definition and producing misprints.

David Finch is an American comic artist but his Youtube channel has some really great videos that apply to manga as well. He has videos on both anatomy and perspective that may prove useful. I do like your art the way it is now if it's any consolation

If you want a thread full of people who should be making comics but are instead making shitposts and drama, might I recommend HYW?

>> No.6983563

I have an idea for the thread. Someone writes a storyboard or script for a single page comic and then everyone draws their interpretation of the text. Would be great practice and a good way to bounce ideas and criticisms off each other since we'd be working off the same source. What do you guys think? Would this work as an /mmg/ thing or should it be its own thread?

>> No.6983586

>>6983563
Group activities like this are kind of its own thing. /mmg/ is filled with people that are by and large already working on their own project and only come in during small water breaks. It's why some iterations of /mmg/ can end up lasting forever while some go by pretty fast.

Have you guys figured anything out that's helped you speed up your workflow?

I find that working with a round brush that has a small amount of size-jitter, and not changing its size often, is best for me.
Like yeah the lines aren't as nice looking as if I laboured it with the G-Pen, but it's WAY faster and it kinda feels like a tech pen.

comics really scale up in time needed, its crazy. If you have 30 pages, just spending 2 minutes adding a tiny detail on every page like hair highlights is already an hour gone. |A whole hour doing something so small and insignificant. I've been contacted directly across various social media platforms to draw the girls as either 1) lewd pinups, 2) lewd [insert mostly normie fetish here], or 3) a straight up NSFW comic.

I don't know if I'll ever get around to doing some of that, but if I did I would most certainly create an entirely different account with links going to my SFW account but not the other way. Too many people get pointless pissy about XYZ nowadays.

I've given the subject some thought ever since the first NSFW request comment slid across my desk. Small monologue:

On one hand, it feels strange to have people requesting lewds of characters you've made, especially if you've not exactly made yourself known as an "official" NSFW artist. You're invested in these characters you've created and put to paper/screen, and now you're getting people who want to see them in a variety of nude poses. It can feel like people don't care about whatever it is you've made, and just want to jump straight to monke brain to jack off. There's also the concern about having your account or overall "brand" get tainted with being NSFW forevermore - as the requesters see it, you've already done it once or twice, why not more?

On the other hand, getting NSFW requests or receiving NSFW fanart of your original work is extremely flattering. It means that you've created characters that people enjoy enough that they want to see more of (in the literal sense lol), in some cases so much that they took time out of their lives to make it. In a way it's the most genuine and sincere compliment you can receive short of receiving regular SFW fanart.

My stance at this point is that I'm likely to not draw anything officially lewd of my girls as I feel it would detract from the (relatively) serious story I want to tell, but if others want to draw stuff, I'm more than grateful that they cared enough to do so.

Single panels/pics: Pixiv, DeviantArt, Tumblr, a few subreddits, and of course X/Insta.

It may be simply because there's so many more people on reddit, but almost all the lewd requests come from there, lol. Those SFW subreddits are ironically way more horny than a board like /ic/.

I don't know that I would ever do straight-up porn or hentai, but I have some nudity/ecchi in my comics.

But it isn't really so much "lewd" nudity, if that makes sense. If I use nudity, it is mostly used in situations of vulnerability, defenselessness, or purity (not like, virginal purity, but purity as in "We came into the world this way, and this is sort of our true form, in all of its perfection and imperfection").

People just have different levels of, I guess, "protectiveness" of their characters. I often see people refer to their characters as being like their children, but I never saw it as that. I see my characters as people with lives, trials, triumphs, failures, successes, weaknesses, strengths, etc. of their own. I just see them as other people that exist, completely independent of me.

I agree with your take regarding treatment of characters, I feel that's the best way to go about things. Just let your characters "be." Creations are supposed to take on a life of their own.

Regarding nudity portrayed for non-sexual purposes, it's funny you mention that. In contrast to all the coomer requests I've received, I've also gotten people upset when they saw I drew a demon simply walking down the hall in the nude in Chapter 1. My stance on it was that demons aren't humans, so they don't have any care about human rules of modesty, but there was still some complaining nevertheless lol. Wonder how they're like when they go and see Greco-Roman statues portrayed in the buff.

The project I got asked about aren't my characters, so I don't feel any connection to them. Upon further thinking, there are some comic artists like Tula Lotay, who draws both sfw and nsfw content and maintains a positive reputation.

I understand you. I don't mind lewding the Oi girls, especially for commissions. I enjoy drawing porn commissions of my characters more than I do drawing porn commissions of established IPs. I think it's cool that people like my characters enough to pay for commissions of them. I'd never draw my characters doing anything too degrading but luckily no one has asked for that yet, apart from one anon who really wanted me to draw Rhiannon getting fucked by a seal. No bueno.
>>6982357
Judging by social media and online engagements, my strengths are drawing catfight fetish comics lol. I like drawing girls wrestling and fighting, but I'm not sure I'd want to do a longrunning comic about it. All the catfight commissions I've drawn over the past few years have helped me improve my skills atleast. I have to focus on getting better at drawing guys because I want the next oneshots I'm planning to feature strong dudes and less emphasis on waifuism.

>> No.6984394

No one's going to permenantly label you as "that guy" unless you start posting really explicit stuff. A tasteful pinup or ecchi will get attention but most people have the ability to 'read the room'. However, the personal limit for what's appropriate is understandable. I think you can potentially give people the wrong ideas if you're not careful about what you post publicly too so that's something to consider. You can't stop people from drawing or posting things of your characters but some people have their foot on the gas waiting for you to give the green to go apeshit.

The worst kinds of people who gotten the wrong ideas about my work only do so because they're completely sick in the head nose deep in coom. They literally won't read and will just say anything thinking I will just do it.

I sure hope you guys aren't considering doing it for free. Even if you want to draw porn of your characters, if people are requesting you do it then you should be sending them your prices as a response. Do not just give people free requests (unless you asked them for ideas to start with), otherwise they'll never stop pestering you to draw x character doing this or that for them.
