If its painting you want to achieve, it's easy to learn. I highly suggest you learn how to accurately shade in a sphere, cube, and cylinder. Once you learn how to do this accurately, you will improve exponentially. There are many resources you can use to do this, Ctrl +paint is a good resource for it especially for digital painters. One thing to keep in mind is to never start with a white canvas, try a neutral gray color.

For such a popular artist I can't find a rip of this anywhere. Do I just bite the bullet and pay for it

It has a lot of great general painting advice, but the book is specifically aimed at impressionistic painting in watercolor done in less than one hour, so it has a lot of practical advice that would be useless for digital. However, Fowkes have some great digital landcape painting courses on Schoolism that are worth checking out.
