You also want to select your teachers: there's lots of bullshit in art today. Look for people who focus on strong technical skills, who don't shy away from hard/tedious work (ateliers, good comic artists, fine-art and traditional artists in general, animation, etc.).
One or two good books could also go a long way. It's a common mistake for beginners to spend time looking for the perfect book that will magically help with everything.
But the key to success is more about tenacity. Hence the idea of looking for teachers who have that kind of mentality, who are harsh and demanding on themselves as well as on their students.
