do y'all use pure black for line? I like using 10-30 because it means I can go darker

>> No.6940949

I look at some of the stuff I make now, and sometimes it's reminiscent of stuff I made 10 years ago. Like how knees are shaped or how the eyes and mouth are shaped. I've drawn a fuckton of different styles and copied a fuckton of different art over the last decade and sure my final pieces are unrecognizable compared to the old stuff. Mass improvement. But I wonder, are there just certain things an artist does that they can never shake? Are you just doomed to certain habits forever because your brain just likes to see things look that way? It's not that they're inaccurate or bad, just unshakable for some reason.

Why are artists so mean? I say that as an artist who grew up with artist buddies. We routinely mocked each other, sabotaged one another, made each other cry and pushed the shit talk so hard one of our homies started crying and then later necked himself for real. I felt terrible about it but I'm still mean nothing has changed. The only people I can safely bully are other artists because they get me, everyone else is like "what the actual fuck is wrong with you you psychopath" art friends just laugh it off.

Probably way too specific, but are there resources for designing neat, intricate, and/or weird gizmos to look like picrel, or is it just something I have to gradually collect enough references from and form my own notes for?

How do you learn to "add the details"?
In line art I guess it's building up to non-color renders
With rendering I see it as: shapes and value -> edges -> blending -> ??? (polish?) -> finished

>>6940806

I haven't found any specific place for references like picrel but I would recommend making a pinterest board and searching under "tech gadgets" or "gadgets and gizmos" and compiling it into a board. There's definitely already some boards that have what you're looking for, I just haven't seen any though.

>>6941067
it sort of depends on what you consider "adding the details," for some people that means rendering, whereas others take it as final touches such as slight highlights, using liquify, etc. As for me, it means final touches, and in my process it falls as the final step.

thanks but I'm not looking for lessons geared toward beginners like "the skull is just a circle"
I'm looking for something akin to "I have the rough sketch done, now how can I make the shapes look more interesting/not boring?", if that makes sense
similar to this proko video here, but I want more

>> No.6941277

>>6941203
The sketch is where you develop interesting shapes. If your sketch is boring it's not going to get better as you work on it. Try different sketches and push different elements to more extremes until something pops out. The more you play the more you develop your sensibilities and the good shape design will come more naturally. There's not really a short cut, you just need to be curious and playful and a coherent style will begin to form.

Hey Anons, does a rendered illustration count as rendered if the sketch is still there? We're talking guidelines, stray lines, indistinct blob shapes (like having a shape for the multiple fingers instead of drawing each individual finger).
A friend of mine says, and I shall quote for all you gentlemen and ladies, "I think rendering is about the texture and lighting not about the outline, overly cleaned up work is overrated anyway"

I could post an example that a friend mentions IS rendering, but I know very well is just just my sketch layer with a little more effort put into the "shadows." It is, however, porn.

How long should it take to go from stiff construction-based low anatomy knowledge mannequins to intuitively dynamic anatomically correct enough anime characters in different angles if I only focus on figure drawing, intuitive perspective purely by composition and lineart for now? I will study from Villpu's drawing manual (basically copying all the figure inside and putting a lot of them in different angles) and anatomy for sculptors, while always trying to put what I learn from those and timed figure drawing sessions into my more stylized art btw.
More suggestions for successful study are accepted.

Do you visualize the exact specific line you want to make prior to making it or do your lines come instinctually? I've been autistically practicing visualizing the exact line or next few lines before committing them to paper and while it's actually showing some pretty decent improvement it's also pretty tiring and i can only hold a couple or a few limited details in focus at a time.

>> No.6944412

>>6943980

I got over this shit long ago by trying to study some of my favorite mangaka's linework. They are usually shit, the lines are wonky and unpolished if I look at them as closely as I do mine. I have come to the realization that perfects lines are pretty irrelevant if you just want a nice drawing and not to show off your skills to potential employers or something

>> No.6944449

>>6944412
it was less of a question about pure line quality and more on how much you think about a line as it matches your imagination/intention. Simple example, if i put to paper a horizon line and use a ruler i can rotate, twirl, twist a box in any given position cause i know the reasoning behind why this angle changes, or this side is smaller, etc. But when i try to draw a box in any position from imagination, only going by the vague idea of the desired box, with no on paper reference or external tools; while i can list out all the given reasons for why each edge should be this length, that angle, etc it comes out poorly, like a caricature of the "correct" box even though i "know" the right steps to make the box im trying to make and could had i used a horizon line, vp, ruler. So what i've been doing now has kinda fixed this, by imagining the exact image, the exact lines, how this line is this exact angle/length compared to this one, and seeing it ghosted on the paper as i draw it. Im just curious if this is how others more experienced "see" what they want to draw before they do/as they do because while it's super effective its really difficult to maintain. Still prolly just the tism tho.

>> No.6944450

>>6940806
I usually ink in black at first for visibility but then I go back & recolor it to match the piece better.

For sketching I just use fun bright colors with each character/object in the piece being sketched in a different color for ease of visibility. If I sketch everything in grey it becomes a huge mess really quickly.

try doing contour drawing exercises, it's when you draw something without lifting the pencil. it'll improve observation and confidence.
also when you ink something try using you elbow and shoulder, rotating the canvas to find the angle that's easiest to draw the line you are trying to.

there's also a lot of draftmenship exercises on youtube that are repetitive but that's how you get milage and confidence

To anyone that uses Krita, what are the best settings/brushes/options i can set to if i wanted to partially mimick the style of Carlos Ezquerra?
Because i hate how flat my drawings usually are and i want to make the brush strokes seem more dynamic and the color shading/blending a bit more interesting.
Or any other tips using Krita is nice, i just mentioned Ezquerra because i think his style is charming.
And chances are some stuff is less about the tools and more about the skill, so maybe i should look into artists streaming/recording themselves using Krita and how they do it.

I see you post this often and I'm never sure how to reply. Those brushes are nothing unusual(mostly regular round brush and airbrush on those fellas) but the coloring style is some really 90's-2000s Photoshop type stuff (none of it actually Photoshop-exclusive techniques, just what everyone was stuck with back then and what the style brings to mind) you don't see around much anymore, you'd probably get something out of looking up process videos from that time.
What makes minimal rendering look interesting is usually down to contrast and shadow shapes, former is easy enough to remind yourself of and really gives depth to a composition, latter is a bit trickier but you'd benefit from studying how your favourite artists pick them.

not him but follow the big/medium/small design principle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZluGXgpdJj4 also consider this book - good composition and shape design go hand in hand

In general just look at successful concepts, this design "rule" is used in everything from big composition to details in clothing. There isn't any specific resource for this because this is a skill you gotta develop and use to dissect and learn from existing designs. Like look at concepts of environment/props/costumes from a game/movie/still shots/keyframes and dissect why it's good. Shape design is always a big part why and plays into good composition.

Gaston is absolutely not queer coded but some characters like for example sherlock and watson in the series SHERLOCK. If you watch it you'll see a LOT of very questionable interractions that wouldn't occur between friends and if one of them was replaced with a woman you'd totally consider them romantically inclined.

As for what it means for your art they could be just bigots who call all men/women not hyper masculine/feminine queer and project their own wants on your art. As your here asking, they clearly are not queer coded because that's done intentionally

reposting from /beg/ thread:

how useful is copying bridgman twice? i feel somewhat confident in my anatomy practice already but I'm having trouble posing figures dynamically especially distributing weight properly on the legs/feet in perspective - which I'm currently working on by doing geometric figure studies and then rotating them arbitrarily. does bridgman realistically teach you construction better than loomis and the above?

ive done hella master studies from Robert Hale's anatomy book, and it's made my observational drawing and rendering much better but hasn't really lent itself fully to teaching figure construction (maybe my approach to studies is wrong). was also considering going through the dynamic sketching 2 course from video general, since its focus is construction/perspective.

Yes, it's set to "Soft" and iirc the brush is based on the original Krita soft brush. Here's the same brush two times, soft stroke with stylus on the left and just pressing and dragging with my mouse on the right. what is the purpose of drawing comics, even worse, drawing them for fun?

It's tiring, it's time consuming. It's viewed as an "inferior" form of art, you spend days for something that will be consumed in merely a few minutes.

it doesn't make sense, it should be a complete waste of time

and yet why can't stop myself from thinking about making them all day

Hey there. Welcome to my schizo post.

Most popular way to estimate a rotated cube by 22.5 degrees is to proportion the side faces 1 to 3. Using trigonometry it's easy to show that the correct ratio is 1 to 2.41.

If it's acceptable to be so much off I propose the following approximations (with the correct ones in parentheses)

15 degrees - 1 to 4 (1 to 3.73)
22.5 degrees - 1 to 3 (1 to 2.41)
30 degrees - 1 to 2 (1 to 1.73)

Do with this newfound knowledge as you will.
Disclaimer: all of this goes out the window if you use different focal lengths and introduce distortion.

Where do you draw the line between a monochromatic and an analogous color scheme? It's probably pointless to obsess about distinctions, but even so I can't remember any illustrations that use exclusively one hue with no variations, so unless it's a concept removed from figurative art altogether I feel it does beg the question.

For monochrome in something like photoshop it would mean picking a color on the color strip and picking any value/saturation from the value/saturation box.
Analogous would be picking that same color and one next/near it on the color strip.
If you're practicing this you can keep that general idea, no one is gonna revoke your art license if you go off a little especially with the analogous approach (for example using red, orange and some yellow for your painting).

Where is the best place to post and get feedback to grow your skills? Unironically I think a mix of /ic/ and some discords are probably the best bet.

I'm afraid to draw again on my digital tablet, years ago I bought it thinking that my drawing skills were going to get better [spoiler] it wasn't.
After tormenting myself with every draw for quite a while, I put down the tablet and focused on just drawing in traditional. Now that my skills level up yo high beg, I know I can make good drawings in digital but i have fear.
Any advice? My anxiety sets in and I decided to continue drawing trad for another hour instead of picking up the damn tablet and drawing.

Open up a canvas, and start playing with the brushes, not even drawing, just see what they do (try to have a good contrast with the canvas to fully see them first, then play around with opacity and flow and brush presets to your liking), then start slowly but surely connecting those trad techniques into your digital ones by picking the brushes that get you the closest.
Look for traditional approach and techniques that can be emulated in digital if you are nervous, but watching something like this would be good enough to get you started.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LroqHa24o-Y&ab_channel=MarcoBucci
https://online-courses.club/digital-brushwork-techniques-marco-bucci/ - (it's not necessary to watch this but he goes a little bit more in depth with demonstrations of how he introduces and thinks about brushwork in his process)
There are refined and more specific ways to get that trad paint/pencil/x look but I'd avoid going in depth yet and first focus on freeing your mind of the burden of getting it right, just allow yourself to play around first with no big commitment behind it other than curiosity.

no, mixer brush was introduced over a decade after these artists learned how to paint in PS. to make it look like greg or mullins you need to be proficient with hard round brush first. It's a certain amount of finessing the textured brushes after that, any pro brush pack will do but I'd recommend Jaime Jones brush pack for starters. (or hell, greg's brushes?)

I recently wanted to draw lace and all tutorials I could find were about what type of pen to use, or what material to draw on, or how to find patterns to copy.

I feel like every decoration-maker is just a happy doodler combining patterns she's copied before.
So after watching a few timelapses of people just having a lot of patience and doing repetitive doodles, I gave up on tutorials that teach any "logic" and instead started copying things, trying to find the paterns on either the positive or the negative spaces of the patterns.

Pic related was what I came up with; it looks quite nice from a distance, but if you zoom in it's wonky.
Doesn't matter, most of the time.

If your desired shapes are more perfect/geometric, remember you can draw the interior of it and then use filling options or copies to create a hollowed-out version of the pattern.

And if you want to expand your "vocabulary", start doodling. Try to include some sort of decoration in all your new drawings and eventually you'll get it.

Probably something like this where you create a library of 2D assets and just move them into place. Separate the head, then depending on expression, drag in different eyes and mouths, and body poses. It's much quicker than flipbook style animation where you have to draw each frame over and over. What I mean is 4:30 in this video.
https://youtu.be/l3C96qjFpYc?si=-weemZBGq4uAdrLY

A second option depending on what you're doing is Blender. Making 3D models can be harder and more involved than just drawing but once it's done, it's done. The animation side is much quicker though because you just have to move and morph the character around and that's why the industry has gone that direction.

Copy art, draw it from memory. Now you've connected some neurons together regarding drawing that thing. Repeat to strengthen that path in your brain. Try it with something simple at first, a favorite cartoon face for example. After drawing it from memory, look at what you got wrong(overlay the drawing with the original if you can) takes notes(write them down), then try that process again, copy, then draw from memory keeping in mind the notes. Improvement is guaranteed. Don't expect perfection or good results, just look for improvement.

I've been paying for Midjourney for the past three months and so far it's only helped me out with backgrounds and palette picking. It is absolutely useless for character art no matter how good it looks at first, every time I've tried to deconstruct generated work for references, it always falls apart and I waste more time fixing it than just drawing from scratch.

Thanks a lot! I think i'm getting it and seeing where this artist makes their rendering choices on top of what I already kind of know. Hopefully I learn how to apply this stuff afterwards.

How do I get out of sketching figures hell?
Every time I think of all the time it takes to make a completed piece I just lose all enthusiasm.

Great start, looking forward to seeing what you make with your newfound color abilities

btw do you have any other work that you've posted?

>> No.6979489

>>6978827
No, I tried but you quickly realize it just churns out popular shit that you already have baked into your mind from it being popular for years online. And since it can't do any tehnicalities right either it's just a waste of time

sure you could argue a lot of anime is like that but I wanted to stylize the body a little bit. I didn't want to just copy a real persons body and draw an anime head on it

I mostly lurk because I don't want to be recognized so I don't post more than copies and studies and the occasional redline to help people. I appreciate the support!

If you're at a point where you're confident with anatomy, you should start doing studies of anime art and see how they simplify the body. Animators are the best to learn from, whether it's their rough sketches or anime screenshots, you can get a sense of what they emphasize or leave out for the simplicity of the shape/form.
A mix of copying those artists and simplifying figures yourself from photo reference will help you combine the head style to the body. You'll find your own shorthand eventually that will suit your tastes once you've studied enough.

I'm confused, are you supposed to use the opacity pressure when doing lineart or only size pressure?

>> No.6979853

>>6979821
Depends what look you're after? If you want extremely solid, single stroke ink lines that are sharp and precise then don't have opacity pressure. But if you prefer to build up your lines over each other and/or rely on your lines to not be completely solid for the colors underneath to show through then one with opacity will be what you want. The latter feels more like doing lineart with a pencil than a g-pen traditionally. If you're asking this though then you should try lining something with both and see which suits your process.

Do you really need to learn perspective before anatomy? Is it plausible for a hobbyist to learn both at the same time? Every resource seems to put perspective first but I don't want to draw a bunch of buildings and boxes

>> No.6980452

>>6980443
You'll start learning anatomy and then realize you don't know how to turn those parts and the figure itself in a passable manner or know how to place them on the floor. Even as a hobbyist, if you want your drawings to not just be stiff and floaty you need some knowledge of perspective. But no one said anything about you having to perfect it before starting to draw everything else. Rudamentary one and two point (maybe three point) is enough to get you started and if you don't want to go beyond that it's fine. It's better to learn it a bit now alongside your anatomy practice.

One of the hard things about drawing is that requires multiple skills at the same time.

In your case, between perspective and anatomy, it's worth the getting the basics of perspective. You don't need a 100 hour course, but at least knowing what is an horizon line, and a vanishing point is required.

Study at most until 3 point perspective. You will see that knowing the 2 point perspective makes easier to understand many things like the human head
