that will need a whole lotta copying to get to that point
drawing is like learning a language
you might have thoughts you wanna speak but you'll have to build a vocabulary of many many words to do that
best way to do that is to copy other's words well enough

Also most artists use reference, ALWAYS if they are not 100% sure how something looks like. You can build things with simple forms too and build up from that. But you can only draw what you see constantly so that it's engraved in your mind. Ancient masters saw great architechture and tons of people in the market place on a daily basis, and this is what they drew.

despite what /ic/ says, using reference is not a bad thing or a crutch, unless you are copying it exactly with no changes or reimagination whatsoever (outside of studies)

I have this issue when painting with watercolour. I cannot finish a landscape without some form of reference.
Just keep at it and keep drawing, you will get that familiarity in time.
