If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Attention actual beginners: "Loomis is a hack" is a stupid meme. Filter the poster out and move on with your life. It's one massive faggot posting it. If you pay attention to this kind of stuff, it's only going to waste your time. Some people just like wasting others' time.

Yes, Loomis is well known in Japan. Yes, Loomis has been referenced for a long time. Yes, Loomis has been used in many curricula. No, he's not perfect. No teacher will be perfect for you, but you need to learn what you can, practice it, and keep what is most useful for you. But you won't know what's most useful to you until after you've had more mileage.

Use the hide post function and get drawing.

Remember:
before criticising any of my work I post, I will require this information about you
1. your full name - name and surname
2. the address of your current residence
3. the address of your workplace
4. your marital status and the name of your spouse, if any
5. your annual wage, before and after tax
6. your license plate
7. your place of birth
8. the names of your parents
9. your credit card number and the expiration date
and finally you MUST post your work.
If but one of these points is not met, or, if I am unable to find a Wikipedia page about you, that matches the information you have given, that lists you as a prominent artist in any artistic field, all your critique directed towards me or my work is invalid and actually the opposite of what you say is true and my work is perfect and devoid of any mistakes.
Also, when you do criticise my work, you can not use any word included in the following list because your post will automatically get filtered by my automatic filtering system. You must treat me like a toddler when you criticise my work or I will cry.

to push the pose means to ENHANCE, HIGHLIGHT, exaggerate. To put it bluntly: alter the reality on your canvas to make your drawing better. Practical example: you are coom drawer: your ref is realistically woman spreading her pussy lips. But a lot of people are turned off by realistic drawing of flappy pussy. So you draw ideal innie vagina and while you are at it you increase size of boobs and make angle of her arm more elegant. this principle can be applied to literally anything, even basic pose of human

Pushing the pose is about thinking of what the pose is doing and where it's going to emphasize what the body is experiencing. How do you make it a more extreme version of what it is? What is the idea behind the pose? You're trying to communicate to the audience what the figure is feeling both literally and psychologically. Oh this person is sad? Their body language will be pushed in that direction and you can choose to take it further.

Is the figure lying down? How much can I push the pose into feeling lazier? They aren't going to spring into action, they let their body surrender to gravity. A hammock is a pretty good visual metaphor to use. It dips in the middle due to gravity bringing down, the figure will do the same to a certain extent.

Use your own fucking brain man, do you want to learn to draw? Do you like drawing? If yes then fucking do it, if not, then stop. You need to keep with a hobby, stop abandoning things, you need to develop your discipline, discipline means doing stuff even when you don't want to. Some people just can't get enough of drawing, they love it are addicted to it. Not all of us have this drive, so you need to force it and make your brain love it. I think that to git good at any particular body part, you should study artists who fetishized that part. Because they’ll obsess over it, love it, express it with the most appeal, and distill it down to its essence. You need to study footfags.

Do you want to be fucked? Because from your posting it sounds like you want to be fucked, anyone can learn to draw, you can be 90 years old, blind, and have no arms and you could still learn to draw.

The question is do you want it? And why do you want it? Do you just wish you were good at art or do you actually enjoying drawing. And I don't mean drawing the very limited subject matter you're interested I mean the fundamental act of mark making.

From what I hear you don't fucking want it. Because if you wanted it you wouldn't give a fuck if you were a vegetable or 90 years old or blind or had no arms, you'd be drawing right now.

That's why you're hopeless because you're a limp wristed waste of energy with no drive, not because of any other extraneous bullshit.

Your line quality is ass because you don't the literal quality of what you're drawing through your lines. Shapes are like this too. Something that is bottom-heavy and sinking into the ground can have a heavier (literal and figurative) line weight at the bottom of the form. Where fabric is stretching across a form should have thinner line weight to communicate that. There's a couple qualities that line can take. Light or dark. Soft or hard. Thick or thin. I find that soft and hard can overlap like in pointillism. Dots, in of themselves, are hard and thin. However, when many of them are distanced apart from each other, it creates a soft effect in the composition when seen at a distance.

Line quality is about empathizing with the visual and often times literal experience of the subject. A muscle belly in the figure has the potential to relax or seriously contract. This means the type of line you should use will change.

Take a course on accurately drawing that has progressions from simple primitives all the way to a finished figure. Apply the lessons to different objects to build a reliable process.

Russian academic drawing on new masters academy is general enough for this. I recommend don't recommend pirating since you don't get any access to the high res images. Proko has a course catering towards beginners and has clear progressions. Brent Eviston maybe. Simplify Drawing and Painting has content on youtube that you can pair with the information from the videos. Dorian Iten has an accuracy course. Could probably pirate it.

After getting your observation up to snuff, Steven Zapata has a course that emphasizes creating believable lighting and form from imagination. Haven't checked it out but it looks promising.

Also while doing any of this you should be producing pieces outside of the course. You don't want to come out of it with just studies to show for it. Use what you learn to make something. Also make sure to ask other people for feedback on whether you did the course assignment properly and to probe where you went wrong.

Well, I'm REALLY fucking bad at art. Like. Genuinely awful. But I want to improve, and I'm good at making progress towards goals I set. In this case, I can't get ANYWHERE without a good grasp of the fundamentals, so that's why I'm focusing on anatomy and composition. I'm essentially visualizing "Drawing an action scene" as having a tree of dependencies I can knock out and work on one by one. This approach has worked well for me in the past, and since I'm starting from literally zero skill, it's what makes sense for me.
I suppose if you wanted a more direct route, you could simply focus on other areas, but I want what I learn to apply to more than just this specific goal. Hope this was helpful. I am not qualified to give artistic advice of any kind, but I have found success with this.

Timed is okay for practicing a knee-jerk reaction of an action line/super basic gesture and breaking the habit of analysis paralysis on one end and turd polishing on the other. The real reason people do 30s to 2-minute gestures is to train yourself out of overly focusing on minor details and taking a long time fussing on the finish of each pose — but that's only useful once you're already quite good.

And basically I'm still too /beg/ for that to be of much use. I need to take the time to slow down and really observe what's going on, and calmly analyze and construct the pose, figure out rhythms, take the time to understand what the fuck the scapula's doing, etc. With only 1-2 minutes, I feel kind of rushed and sloppy. Probably 5-7 minutes would be fine, but for now I'd rather take my time. It gives me breathing room and space to focus on the drawing a little more, which at this point, I think is more helpful than not. I don't get into rendering and I keep things at a less "finished" stage before moving on to the next pose, so I try not to take too long.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks alot for your critique, anon.
You talk a lot about lines and shapes in how they should portray the qualities of the object they form part of and honestly it is pretty fucking depressing that I canrely put some shit together while trying to somewhat resemble something while a skilled artist can not only make it look proportional but also make the lineart look good.

Regarding courses, I did the first few lessons of DAB but got tired of the motherfucking boxes and dropped it as soon as I realized it wasn't going to teach me human figure drawing and then went with Eviston but it seems I didn't learn shit.

I feel a bit bummed knowing I don't have any solid foundation and I have been doing it wrong all this time.
Guess I need to learn how to make lines and shapes that don't look like dogshit before trying to draw a figure.
Sometimes I wish I could be one of those autismos on DeviantArt ecstatically drawing the same horrible shit over and over again instead of hating myself for doing the very same.

I am just going to scrap all this dogshit and get back to the very start and grind fundies. Halloween finished already and I don't think I can get something worth a damn for christmas.

subjective, I like to fit 3 heads inside the torso makes the figure less chunky. Try experimenting with multiple head heights, looks artists you like and measure their figures. It's understandable to get discouraged, anon. I often times still feel the same way. You will find that all you can do is to keep working at it.

I do recommend you give the Russian academic drawing course a shot. While you do start with primitives, they are there to provide you with an easier environment to utilize the observational techniques you've learned and to practice your straight lines.

Now, no one course teaches everything. You're not going to learn how to draw a stylized figure with big booba in this course, but there is a certain level of invention that Iliya employs when designing the drawing that is applicable to good design. The course is mostly the approach they teach at the Repin academy and it centers around planar analysis and good observation. Having these tools sets you up to be able to see properly, even if you only finish the first part of the course ending with the Asaro head. I suggest, if you do take a course, to use the observational techniques provided to emulate the artist(s) whose level you aspire towards. Being able to see and observe the height and width ratio of an object is a critical skill for an artist to acquire, that and seeing angles accurately. Keep working and learning anon, it's the only way towards where you want to go.

When taking a course make sure you have people assess your assignment and provide the criteria and context of the lesson so that others can point out specifically where you strayed.

Just look, observe, and learn the thing. Then apply the thing to your work. The hard part is knowing which reference is good, and which one sucks and you're wasting your time. It all comes with practice and mileage though, you'll get it anon.

How wide are supposed woman's hips to be? When I try to draw them wider than clavicle/shoulders, it comes out awkwardly bottom-heavy more fit to fat housewife instead of more adventurer sort, if you get me.
On other hand, I don't want to make them narrow because that's more of male build.

Sure, but it doesn't help about me feeling weird. It's like drawing a construction of a girl and having to keep seeing her bald, just not as bad, I guess.

I see...
When people compare shoulder-hips width, do they mean the clavicle only or also shoulder-arm part as well? It could make a difference when making a musclegirl with larger arms.

Aalright so something interesting happened today.

It seems my ability to draw things in general has sped up, as in I no longer seem to struggle with shaping things as much as I used to, infact my hand strokes are far easier to manage and are less prone to error compared to before.

A drawing like this (I did mess around with it a tad for shits n giggles I know it looks bad it was unfinished) for instance, would have taken me 30 minutes to do a few weeks ago, but this one only took around 10 minutes or so.

What does this mean? Is there anything said about when someone whose learning how to draw can suddenly draw faster with reduced errors?

I've only been drawing since around 26th of September this year so over a month.

Is it just merely the brain just getting used to drawing more?

I can't really draw things that I truly like yet but I am getting the hang of it.

Yes, most people will see huge improvements in initial months after picking up drawing. It makes it a lot of fun. You will hit a wall soon after though.
That's why you need to think of it as a slow process rather than rapid one. Just make it a habit and draw for fun and to solve issues (study). Otherwise, it will become a chore and pointless after the improvements slow down.
