/mmg/ - MANGA Making General Anonymous 10/24/23(Tue)19:38:05 No.6904557▶>>6904567 >>6904573 >>6904583 >>6908726
The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related sequential work. Western-style comics and illustrations are not the focus of these threads, and should be posted to either /hyw/ in /co/, or other western-related com/ic/ threads.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making sequential art are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western/indie publishers of manga-comics:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Some one make the proper thread that doesn't include the schizo, thanks.

>> No.6908818 [DELETED]

Sequential art is sequential art, there aren't enough ppl doing it in here to warrant 10 /gens for each genre. the thread is already slow as it is.
This thread just got recently hijacked by a severely mentally ill dingus that stole the original thread headers and then proceeded to deceptively change them without consulting anyone, and that alone would've warranted a permaban in here if jannies were more careful.

Secondly no one knows who this dingus is and has never posted any work in here prior, an actual tourist, and those usually only last a thread before they fuck off.
Not gonna lie this kid is one of the most virulently autistic individuals we've ever had so far.
/mmg has been on here for quite some years now evolving over time to include everything sequential.

As for captain retardo, nobody wants you here, you will never be respected. The whole thread is just taking a piss at you, you will never be more than a fucking joke. Your own art skills aren't even on the level to warrant any fucking authority anywhere...like are you dumb bro?
Go open your own discord and put whatever rules you want in it. Whatever you're trying to pull in here won't work and that’s why nobody’s posting anything you ruined this thread and will be eventually thrown out of here.

So if any mods read this can plz ban this troll, and whoever was in charge of creating new /mmg threads just do your thing the same way it's been done, and if it ever warrants a change, it will be by committee and not a the whim of severely maladjusted individual.

Komawari = panel flow

Skilled artists can evoke a sense of flow in seemingly simple panels.
Here we see some cats staring at a nuclear explosion.
The *flash* sound effect in the top panel starts off and then leads you into the face of the closer cat, who appears bigger as he is more forward in the shot.
The second *flash* sound effect, being contrasted against a black background, pulls you downwards while the triangular shadow shape on the cat also pushes your eye towards it's face, and then onto the smaller cat.
Now this same same cat's head appearing larger pulls you toward the bottom and final panel of the page.

tl;dr - the cat heads and SFX both have separate compositions that both guide you in the same direction across the page

It's not a different composition than the rest of the picture, it's 2 compositions within the picture. The cat heads have a composition and the SFX have their own and they both follow the same direction on the page.

Breaking down and analyzing them is how you understand things. If all you see is "a page with a bunch of cats on it" that sounds like a skill issue (much as I hate to use that word) unironically.

>art school is a fucking joke. All I learned was-
I don't believe you went to art school at all.

Making manga, making art requires skill, the skill to utilize fundamental techniques effectively to get across whatever point you're trying to make with your art.
It is hard, but it's also easy once you understand the mechanics and the process, and to do that you have to analyze it first.

Ugh. This made me want to stay in a library for a whole week and write shit while also drawing with zero distraction just so I can express the ideas I have in mind.
>but it really comes down to what kind of story you want to tell.
>Do you have any broad details you care to share about the project?
I kind of like to write a comedy in the similar vein of Cromartie + Prison school with some tiny bit of seriousness at the later chapters. I also kind of like to keep it short with an open ending so I can back at it again once I felt like it and all you know.
As for the broad story. Kaname, a huge fujo girl, got overexcited when she heard the all male prestigious school that is supposed to be known for its ikemen/bishounen students are now accepting female students too. She's so excited that she moved in to her older sister's dorm and just enrolled straight away, fantasizing about living the shojo/fujo fantasies she had in her head.
To her extreme disappointment, her first day ends up with her seeing her class full of 30+, old looking, ugly male students - and all are eyeing her desperately, seeing that she is the only female in class - and a very hot one at that specially seeing how she prepared her best look. Pervy hijinks ensues for the day and once she is going home that afterclass, she saw other girl students coming in campus - along with all the other handsome ikemen/dark triad billionaires/handsome vampire students too. Only then did she realized that the school has two classes, day class where all the 'normal/ugly' male students attend, and night class where all the hunky shojo/josei/diabolik lover type of male student attend. All the other girls stated they want to be at night class, but since Kaname didnt state in her application form which class she'll attend, the school body throws her to day class because she didnt state which class she'll attend and day classes has no female students.

I've already drawn Kaname and her older sister but I have yet to decide what her older sister's role will be. I am also planning to add a shit-head little sister too that will complicate her life as well as draw more ugly AND handsome students for Night class. Its the reason why I am also reading through Rose of Verseilis or any other shojo manga/VN/etc I can get my hands just so I can get some design and story notes I can parody, not to mention parodying all the ugly bastard/ntr hentais and the silly tropes I've read so far eventhough the manga would most likely not be full blown hentai but heavy in salacious ecchi similar to Prison school.

Small question. For personal reasons I plan to train up drawing traditionally rather than digitally. Once I get to a certain point of skill I'd like to do an analog to digital manga process where things like storyboarding, drafting, and inking are done traditionally with pen and pencil and then the manuscript is scanned for tone, typeset, and any needed corrections. I plan to get a lightbox for the traditional parts so I wonder exactly how that works. I plan to use Deleter Comic Paper with the rulers and guides for the manuscript but I have to wonder how am I to use a light box? Do I put the draft paper down onto the light box and then overlay the comic paper over the drafts, turn on the light box, and then start inking?

Ever notice how physical manga is always printed on off-white gray or brown paper while digital manga (and digital books in general) are always black on pure white background? The light tone on the paper definitely affects the contrast but it seems digital versions never really account for that. No one has said that manga (=Japanese comics) and for example American comics are exactly the same. What people are saying that manga and American comics have different norms and conventions but they're still part of the same medium. The difference in the format isn't big enough to justify calling it a separate medium; one tradition has a reading direction suits the Latin alphabet better and the other follows the way it's been traditionally done in East Asian literature. Arabic, Japanese and English novels are all formatted differently but they're still part of the same medium.
Going on a sperging spree that has lasted over two weeks and hijacking an /ic/ general (that only gets few posts per day in the first place) over this nonsense is fucking retarded and you should rethink your priorities in life.
And lasty, the obsession with segregating art is a fanboy nerd mindset. Artists absorb influences from everywhere.

I‘m trying to translate the traditional manga style into digital. I just used the brushes that Procreate offers. My takeaways right now are, that I definitely need more confident linework. Probably a more oval brush to apply different line weight and also more dynamic.

Tons of manga companies use the word "comics" in their names. Doesn't mean it's not manga. Manga just means "Japanese comics" in the non-Japanese speaking world.
There is an AI writing tool out called "Comic Copilot" (ComiCopo) that just came out in Japan. It isn't called Manga Copilot because it's abbreviated name would be the word for "pussy" (ManCopo/MangaCopo).
They can use "comics" and manga interchangeably because they mean the same thing in their language. But when a non-Japanese person says "manga" it's meant to specifically denote Japanese comics(or "comics" by foreigners made in the Japanese manga style).

To add to this - on my last trip to Japan when someone asked what I do I told them I draw comics, and he said "manga?" and I told him no it's a comic, but he was using the word "manga" to describe it to someone else.
A few days later someone else wanted to see it, so as a sort of experiment I called it "manga". Then he goes "komikku janai?" (Isn't this a comic?). Showed this same person a fully JP manga page I did and he called it "manga".
That basically settled it for me.

Making something that meets the technical requirements of your work to be in the condition for publication in a Japanese manga magazine is just the minimum standard and that much is achievable. nothing to do with paper quality
the pure white you have on screen is similar to someone lighting you which is way different that the reality since with shadow and other light bouncing in the room the paper wont be pure light even when you draw them

Usually you just have to do it a lot and get feedback from people who read it. Start with short stories and not long and grandiose ones. When it comes to thinking of stories, I assume it’s different for everybody since I can’t just sit down and think of something. Usually it comes to me whenever I’m doing something unrelated and mindless, or am at the gym. But I’ll start with a simple concept or a specific scenario that sounds interesting and build up around it. For example, Shinji Ikari, but is actually a 40 year old, schizophrenic fast food worker who threatens to blow himself up at work with homemade explosives and Asuka and Rei are just figments of his imagination.

>> No.6924457

Since we're loosely on the topic of comics and manga, I spent the day looking over some of the ones I owned and making comparisons. With comics, right off the bat, each panel feels like a totally different scene even if it's in the same room. Fights are not animated in the slightest, they focus entirely on impact shots and, at most, the wind up where you'll get half a quippy joke. The pacing is also totally fucked and this is present in both new and old comics. The only dude who seems to get it right is Mike Mignola, everyone else I guess lacks the patience to tell a story. Also the dialogue for comics is WAY too fucking long like sweet jesus it makes HxH look good.
The take away I got from this all is that manga focuses on animating the page. You WILL see a panel dedicated to characters walking. You WILL see totally speechless pages. And that's all okay because it isn't trying to flood your brain with only what the author wants to tell you, not the artist. A fun little exercise I did was peruse through both a manga (specifically Black Lagoon) and a comic (specifically X-men #1) and NOT read it, just look at the pictures and try to see if, through the images alone, can you still understand the story? X-men failed pretty quickly, Black Lagoon did surprisingly well. That's all I have to say. Let your art speak for itself.

I think it takes a predisposition the same way everything does. In this case, a love for storytelling. I'm a writer, but not because i've written books, but because i'm addicted to creating new fiction. I do a lot of what's called "discovery writing" where when I have an idea i'm thinking about, I just write it. In a way it's a lot like sketching where it's just meant to be fun and indulgent, and a way of exploring new territory.
