If you are a /int/ermediate or /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

>TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Whatever happened to /salt/? It was a good coom containment thread

>> No.6901933

Well, I don’t really think of myself as a coom artist and I don’t really know if that’s what I want to “be” as an artist. I don’t think so. At least I don’t want to be defined as a coom artist to where it would seem weird to people if I drew something non-lewd. But I like drawing it. I like feeling those forms, ya dig? I’ve been told I have some kind of innate ability for drawing coom. Whenever I draw coom it usually ends up in the OP post. But there seems to be some kind of stigma at least on /ic/ that if you draw mostly lewd stuff you’re not a proper artist.

Also, do you guys really not like mass reply posts? I thought I was helping contribute to the thread with replying to the (you)less and giving people any tips or feedback or even just encouragement I could think of. It takes me a long-ass time to write the big mass reply posts. Do they really feel like spam?

Is it even possible to use greyscale shading, but with hard shadows?
Left is what I usually do which is flat color fill->greyscale with airbrush->lights->gradient correction layer.
On the right I tried it with more hard shadows, but I don't know how to approach it. Should I just say fuck it, handpick shading colors instead of playing around with greyscale?

While I could had done more digital drawings this year. In this drawing made for a friend's fantasy setting, I tried a new way of coloring/shading that isn't just "have a half transparent black shading layer with multiply".

And considering I am experimenting on that. Is there anything to say about it (alongside the rest of the artwork itself of course)?

Did you draw on all those textures yourself?
I feel like there are places where you could pull back your linework (like the pants), you are creating some high-information but poorly textured regions, when you could get away with some cel-shading shapes or brush texture to imply.

The poses are fine but I think you could've workshopped them a bit more to be more dynamic, especially since you're already positioning them in an action-y sort of shot. I'm unfamiliar with the characters, but I think you could make them more expressive if you have them focused on something off-screen and interacting with each other instead of standing. When it comes to left's body, she has a mannish physique and her breasts are too round, so they sorta look like moobs. Doesn't help she has a man chin and a box-shaped torso.
When it comes to background elements like clouds, it's a good idea to imagine them moving toward some point in the horizon, as is the case in nature. Thick, full plumes of clouds better illustrate the illusion of position of these clouds and help fill in otherwise blank space in the background. It might be a good idea to remember where your light source is (the sun) and build how the sky gradient reflects.
The hairs look uh, clumpy and off. You might want to consider drawing them with more shapes to better define them. When it comes to skin tones, I'd strongly urge you to consider using multiple layers of reds or blues or whatever of varying opacities to blend them together. The pants look wrinkly instead of poofy, so you really want to consider how the detail lines curve, especially when you have so many on the pants. You forgot to shade/detail the cloaks and vests and belts. I think the shading can be more harsh? Overall, it's fine but I think you can spend more time on details.

Sick characters. 2 things I recommend is making the facial features a little bigger on both girls and using fewer lines to represent clothing folds. For cartoony styles like that, less is usually more. Experiment with peices of cloth on your arm in the position of your drawing to see which lines would appear biggest in the sleeve.

I am kinda surprised you can't see it. Look at the distance from each eye to the pencil line of your nose. It is roughly the same despite it being the right side of the nose and not being straight on. The ridge of your nose is significantly raised, and when you character is looking any direction other that directly at the camera, it is going to be closer to the eye further from the viewer. Here's a face with a similar slight angle away from the camera. Look at how close the right side of her nose is to one eye, and how far it is from the other.

As a beg, the only thing I'd recommend you is to look at your artwork and compare it to other artists' work. If your artwork is worse, go cheaper on rates, if better, go higher. I'd also make sure your best work isn't below the expected skill level of artists that do commissions. No point in charging if there's no interest/demand.

Do a little bit of reading and watch a few videos. You'll get it. And yes, all parallel lines should converge into a vanishing point more or less. The red lines on the humvee are incorrect because those lines are all parallel and should be converging on the same point.

I'm retarded and need help. I'm working on a project that entails drawing on card stock (pokemon cards, magic the gathering, etc) and I don't know what kind of ink to use.

I've tried acrylic pens and the gloss or whatever these cards have on them as a coating doesn't like them.

I tried metallic ink brush pens and it's cool I guess but the ink itself when dried is extremely sticky and gross.

Water-based ink on that cardstard suffers the same fat only worse than acrylic.

Is there another type of ink that would work?
I'm just now considering maybe just using a fine paint brush and avoid the pens altogether? Any advice is appreciated.

These are plastic coated. They are designed to not be soiled. You will most likely need something with a strong enough solvent to eat through the coating. And that will most likely ruin your cards.

never did Hampton but construction and form is key, it should be your goal when figure drawing to break the body down to forms you can remember and use later. gesture and in effect, proportions, is to help bring accuracy and life to these forms. when you can do this reliability you can then dress up your figures by learning anatomy

I smoke from time to time to calm my nerves and it does help me get past that initial barrier, get focused (not hating my skills), and have fun figuring everything out. since the root cause is personal/mental, I would recommend trying something else to calm you down/get over your hang-ups first though, like real self-evaluation as to why you feel that way in the first place and being realistic with expectations.

Day 9 of learning the basics n whatnot. Didn't do any value practices today, so I'll start with that tomorrow. Did some imagination stuff, did some sketch stuff. Felt like drawing cats and snakes, so I did. I absolutely got FILTERED, by snakes today though. I thought it'd be easy, but my brain went all dumb trying to draw them. Also learned something new from Proko; Line weight and how you can use it for depth, form, shadow, etc. Was really interesting. His assignment for it was to trace over a line art of his(that rhino) and try to apply line weight. Like darken lines that are near shadows n whatnot. I kinda botched the first one, since I didn't fully comprehend what I was supposed to do. Felt better about the second one, but It's unfinished. I'll get to that tomorrow. Overall a feelsgud day.

Your colours aren’t bad (still off but close enough) the biggest problem is your proportions are off, you either need to spend more time measuring and practicing accuracy in the beginning stages of your drawing, or be willing to correct and erase things when they fall out of proportion later on.

Well then, not everything you draw from imagination ends up shit, anon. If you're able to do something adequately with a reference, try applying the same to an imaginary pose you've made up in your head made while referring to multiple references that are tangentially similar to it to recreate it accurately. Or better yet, draw something you really wanna see. Why did you start drawing anon? If it was to draw porn, then start doing that. If it's to do fine art, then start doing fine art. At the end of the day, there's no right answer to the question of "What should I draw", and the solution to the question of "how do I draw it" always changes depending on what it is you're going to draw.

Everything you're learning are tools to help you draw the images in your head, they strict guidelines that you must follow to create art.

Instead of worrying about colors and stuff, practice rendering primitive forms in grayscale. Vilppu and Marc Brunet have good tutorials on rendering with modeling tone. I’ll try that, I think honestly half my problem is if I don’t draw something immediately good from my head I give up on it, when I should just be aiming to make stuff from my head more in general and worrying about the quality afterwards.

> Or better yet, draw something you really wanna see. Why did you start drawing anon?
Oh shit I don’t even know any more man. I used to like drawing pretty women not in like sexual stuff or anything but just cause I loved their faces and the dresses. Now though my depression has taken such holds of me I draw bottles, knifes and not much else. I don’t even enjoy it but I find the still objects are good studies.

Yeah true, I need to get into the rhythm of drawing daily or at least more often then I am now. The last time I actually drew for an extended period was when I tried to do a copy of a Stalin painting.

That's the biggest hurdle that is holding you back, anon. You cannot fear failure or it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whenever I sketch something, it's always lopsided, off, misshapen, and imperfect but that's just fine. Sketching is when you're allowed to make mistakes because your goal is to get the idea down on paper. It's also the best time to experiment with your drawings too! You can fix and refine the idea as you continue drawing it, so there's no repercussions for failure, because during the sketching phase your drawing will be as ephemeral and loose as it is in your imagination!

You can always try blending the colors and your strokes with a soft cloth, a napkin or even a piece of paper.

Thought I'd pop back in here to say a few words of thanks to the people who gave me feedback, it was the missing puzzle piece I needed. Despite using this site far too much, I've never really delved into this board. And honestly there's such a refreshing attitude towards improvement compared to the wider art community. When you ask for critique most places elsewhere, all you get is a "Wow this looks cool, I'm going to sugar-coat the fuck out of this and refuse to explain why what I said looks strange looks strange." But here it seems to be a "This looks like shit, I'm going to explain the fundamentals to you so you can understand why." Being faceless comes with complete honesty. Many thanks, anon! Hope to see you folks again soon.

turned out ok
i could render the shadow cleaner if i did it again but i cant be arsed because to get to this point it took me long enough.
i dont easily blame the brush i use but for this i definitely was using a bad brush at first which slowed me down a lot.
turns out photoshop had a better pencil brush i hadnt tried before.
but even with this brush im still struggling a bit. i could do this better on paper.
got any advice on how to better emulate a real pencil? i suppose i should first pick a lighter color for the lighter areas and then pick a darker color, i was doing this with near-black the whole time. ill try that next time.

Yeah, I’m not good enough yet for a 1 or even 2 minute timer to be useful when practicing gestures. Maybe a stopwatch so I can track time under tension lol
>>6903015
Creativity is just connecting and combining existing things into something else. Or removing stuff from an existing thing to make it into something else. It’s hard to train “creativity” but it’s easy enough to practice “connectivity.” Exploring relationships and connections between different things and the connections between parts that make up a whole. Then just play with those connections. Addition: “How can I combine this thing with that?” Subtraction: what something would be like if you removed some aspect of it. “How would doctors work if they couldn’t see?” “What would modern tech look like without internal combustion?” Metaphor is a big one. “How is this thing like something else?” And contrasting ideas are classic to the point of being borderline archetypal, like the sexy nun or gentle giant or gap moe. Also anthropomorphization. Much of it is also just asking dumb questions and drawing the answer to them.
>>6903030
Interesting colors. Why’s that guy holding a giant screw? Where’d he get it?

Cute, soulful and not bad at all. The lettering on the danger sign above her head isn’t in the same perspective as the wall, and it’s missing the bottom of the “E” and “R” so it looks like the sign just says “dang!” The little section of wall in the corner is throwing off the perspective. Overall this is great tho

Looks like one magical girl is yanking another by her cape. Try drawing these poses as nudes, or try to redline your own drawing to see if those legs connect up to hips in a way that makes sense. Especially the girl being yanked

Let go of your ego. Get over yourself and stop taking things so seriously. You’re taking yourself too seriously because you use words like “my art” and “my output” and wanting to draw stuff for social media engagement. Study things that you wouldn’t mind studying/analyzing staring at just for their own sake. Whether that’s copying the art that you love, studying serene landscapes, feeling the form of a woman’s butt dimples, analyzing totally sweet tanks and monster trucks, whatever. Stuff that you would attempt anyway regardless of the appearance of your sketches, things worth drawing ugly because you just think they’re so neat to look at.

Also, do low-stakes exercises so you won’t bruise your fragile ego if they come out ugly because they’re already ugly and it doesn’t matter anyway. Simple shapes and primitives. Rotate boxes, do line control exercises, etc. Do Draw A Box. Draw 3d forms like chains only with scribbles.

Don’t expect to be good until you’ve earned it. In fact, don’t expect to be good ever, because as you get better, your ability to notice flaws will improve beyond your drawing ability and you’ll never be satisfied. Give up on drawing for ego. Just have fun instead. Hell, take a week of just drawing things bad on purpose, as a joke.

If you want to draw. Maybe you don’t. If you’d be happy to commission others to draw your OCs like you’re a writer hiring an illustrator, you might go to /g/ and learn about AI. If the thing that matters to you is just pretty output of characters you dream up, and you really just want to have neat characters and stories that people like on social media, then AI might be a workable solution. Use AI as your illustrator. Otherwise, put your ego aside and do the things you know you must, just for their own sake.

In my story, goblins are tinkerers who build big machines, so giant screws are readily available. He’s old and needs a cane, and just settled on using the giant screw.

1. when drawing scenery with very tall objects with tilted camera you want to utilize 3 points perspective. the way you drew this kinda implies the trees are lying sideways instead of growing towards the sky. Link very related, check it out
https://images7.alphacoders.com/100/thumb-1920-1009681.jpg
Notice how all trees are pointing towards the 3rd vanishing point which isnt located on horizon, but instead it is bellow the ground directly bellow the camera. It is called nadir (zenith is when you are looking up). Essentially drawing tree underneath camera is like drawing finger pointing at camera: you only draw the tip of the finger (foreshortened).

2. to cope with vanishing points outside your canvas as tradchad you will need a ruler: for normal vanishing points draw 2 vertical lines, then draw ANY 2 lines which both aim in the direction of desired vanishing point: this way you get two line segments. Split these into halves, quarters, quads. Then connect them like in pic related: what are you doing is essentially drawing perspective grid which you can then use for very high precision. For nadir / zenith you do the same thing, but with horizontal lines.

3. instead of trying to fill whole area with the pencil, be like a pro and instead draw contour lines / textures. Aka when drawing grass do some sharp hair like spikes implying leaves, when drawing tree bark do scribbles to imply the trees bark is rough and so on

TLDR read framed perspective book.

I usually really hate this genre of character sheets because it has always been kinda infantile crap. 2000-15 was the deviantART era of edgy OCs and anime self-inserts. Now it's oversaturated with reclusive kids that 1) can't draw for shit 2) can't write character descriptions without including pronouns, xsexual, ygender. Maybe I sound annoying for the last point, but it tends to lead to extremely uninteresting characters.
Props for not going the cliché route, and the art looks decently polished (though there's always room for further development). Aside from that, always proofread your text (there's a redundant article in the first sentence).

‘Making it’ is manifesting the fanfiction idea I have for a story that’s buzzing in my head

I don’t have all the parts of the story beyond loose basics but the basics I know I want to have is
-I want to create a drawn, something, be it comics, digital animation ala pixel-art with short full animation scenes, or just animation.
-I want 108 chapters of this thing. The number references esoteric stuff involving Dharmic religions that the magic systems are very loosely drawing from, so it’s important I make 108 of those. The structure and number is important because, well it just is I’m not questioning the autism on this.

Beyond that and stuff involving the story, I don’t have much of a structure, just doing what I can do and doing it in a pace that strikes while the show it’s referenced on is culturally relevant, recently. This would be silly to make in the middle of the 2030s for instance, I want to start presenting this on a specific day three years after the show ended for other autistic reasons involving Pokemon Gold/Silver, and I feel like waiting longer would be too long. I’m trying to create in the style of the show, and learn the basics of art creation as I go so I can make this thing look good.

It’s just overwhelming though because I don’t know how to break up the few plot events I’ve already got somewhat tangible, and stretch out the ideas into a functional story of three 36 episode seasons. I need to design characters for the story, parts of the story to flesh out the pace, and check off a few plot and character arc boxes I want checked off. I only have Fun with a Pencil and How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way on hand, art supplies are limited and I keep losing them, and while I’ve told my folks I want to go halfsies on a Cintiq 22 so I can start drawing digitally, I have a feeling they’re gonna just ignore it and give me some 80 dollar tablet and I’ll have to save for the thing myself.

>> No.6904711

>>6903882
I want to have pride in what I’ve accomplished and peace in my pace. I guess fragile ego is a way to view it, but I don’t know how to challenge the thoughts that destroy it. I’m 33 and I feel directionless, and pointless, and I hate feeling that. I hate feeling that I am beholden to this single consciousness and I’ve done so little with it. I haven’t dated people, I haven’t gotten a job my parents respect me for, I’m fat, I haven’t got skills and I floundered in college. I need a direction or purpose to myself or else I’ve just been, and being has been awful and I’d rather kill myself than just keep being, just keep doing nothing, having no kids or love, just working unappreciated jobs for basic pay and having middling success in video games.

Either I want to just find happiness with my lot, or be able to manifest success in some creative field, to rebuke the suicidal ideation I have daily. Just talking about this, I feel it’s undoable and want to die, and I don’t want to feel that. Making this art thing feels like a bulwark against that, like a big sign I can return to and go ‘No, (me), you made this and people enjoyed it, you made a tangible impact on the world and put your name to it.’ All I have right now similar to that is greentext shitposts and I can’t put my name to THEM, that’s cringe. I don’t want to leave being the guy who just keeps fucking up again and again and that’s all my life feels like. I want to win, I want to feel like I did something, I changed the world in some small way by being here and art seems to be the way to get that.

Either that or just die. Just check out right now, and no one wants me to do that except 4chan and only jokingly.

>fat
>depressed
Oh well no wonder, then. Of course you don’t feel motivated to do art, Anon. No matter how well you draw. You’re depressed, silly. Good news is depression and obesity are actually easy to fix. Well, simple to fix. For the next 30 days (it’ll start working sooner, within the week) I want you to do this:
>eat literally ONLY FATTY RED MEAT and salt to taste
>do not eat literally ANYTHING else except prescribed meds
>drink ONLY pure water
>drink literally nothing else

Talk to your doctor about monitoring any meds you take as you will probably need them to lower the dosage, especially if you’re on anything like insulin, metformin, painkillers, or blood pressure meds.

If you’re caffeine dependent, then detoxing from caffeine might suck too much along with everything else, so you might want to take low dose caffeine pills to stave off headaches. Caffeine pills are preferable to drinking coffee in this case, because you’re doing an elimination diet. But if you’re only an occasional coffee drinker, you can try stopping cold turkey.

Do that and your depression will go away.
It’ll just not be there anymore
Try it.
If I’m wrong, you can kill yourself just to spite me if you want. But REALLY try it exactly as described for at least 30 days. You’ll feel it start working before then, but give it the full 30 days at least to assure yourself it’s not placebo. Then you can begin slowly adding back one animal-based food at a time, every couple weeks if you want — like eggs or chicken or butter — and see how you do. But start off as strict as you can for the fastest result.

That instinct whispering that life shouldn’t be this way, that it can be different if you only knew how? It’s right. You can do it, Anon.

>t. put treatment-resistant suicidal depression in complete remission for 5 years and counting with a carnivore diet. Plus other neat stuff including losing about 100 pounds of fat and gaining about 12 pounds of muscle.

I never draw more than 30 min at most. I don't have a goal. I am demotivated. It's like the whole world screams, don't draw. From now on I will stop studying fundies and go straight to what I want to draw from the deepest of my soul, or I will die while trying. Which is more likely, I spend the whole evening and night (11pm to 7 am) drunk. I am drunk as fuck right now and I don't know what to do with my life and I hate humanity. If I had a button to kill everyone but myself and a qt.13 I would press it.
