Is freelance digital art and comics a good job for a single parent who doesn't want to blow all his money on daycare? I might end up with a kid soon and I am panicking.

Find a company to work for. Indeed.com is a great job search for stay at home jobs. Illustrator, digital artist, traditional artist, make yourself sound professional and good at what you do.

If you must do something independent, publish a book on the Kindle store if you have a damn good story idea. Make the first book or prologue a free book to get views and people who impulse buy anything free. If the story hooks people, charge for each following book

Yeah seems I will need passive streams of income via patents and published books, or subscriptions

Are you a pregnant woman? If this child is biologically yours, get child support asap. Anyway, I'm assuming this kid is 0-4 years old, so if you're in the USA, get all the gov bennies you can. They offer daycare assistance but you should probably try to get a part time job or work nights at a work from home call center job. Some welfare requires a min amount of work hours a month like food stamps, I think
You need a lot of clients built up to have a freelance career and prepare to beg to shit indie comic writers for paid gigs on FB or Reddit

No, I am the uncle. I am adopting my infant nephew (under 1yr old).

I am looking into the gov bennies that might help. IDK if I qualify for subsidized daycare though because I am considered a part time worker. I have a W2 part time job with a company, and then I fuck around and do art for the rest of the day. I don't qualify for food stamps even with a kid because my savings are too high.

Also what's fucked is that with a kid I can only make up to like $3600/month until they cut off daycare subsidies, but the second you go a dollar over, suddenly it's all on you and part time daycare is like $2000/month. I live in a HCOL city.

I write my own online comic but I am still new. I am trying to carve out a niche for myself and make a product that nobody else can come up with. But I can definitely use better art skills.

FUCK these niggers suggesting you get a job to afford daycare.

I don't know what kind of novella your life is to end up in this situation, but willing to be a stay-at-home parent for the sake of the child is a very nice attitude of yours..
It might look easier to just delegate the responsibility of educating the child to someone else, but not only will the child be at the mercy of unwilling workers, they will grow apart from you at too early an age and you will have no chance to imbue any values into him.

If you think art is the path forward to you, find freelance jobs with marketing companies, yes.
Unfortunately in order to be there for the child you will have to be a demon somewhere else, and that's in your art. If you want profits, globohomo is your best bet.

Learn motion graphics, globohomo style, storyboarding for planning/directing ads. Learn the basics of visual language and how to describe it in technical detail.

If you find a marketing company in need of a graphic designer, that's your golden ticket to a decent salary.
You will have to work extreme hours sometimes, suddenly, because clients ask for redos, but other than that you'll be able to be there for the kid.

Good luck, man.

It's not that Uncle-anon needs a pants job to shove nephew into daycare, it's that if he wants to take full advantage of getting gov bennies, some might require him to have a job but also be a certain percentage under the poverty line.
Also at a certain age, it will be good for the kid to socialize and get to know other kids. Maybe Uncle-anon will meet some nice milf.
It's fucking hard out there to just get a remote job at a company making globohomo graphics. They're more likely to hire someone from India or the Philippines for 15 cents a day. If anon really wants to cash in, he should draw furries

Where the fuck is the mom going after she pops it out? One parent should be doing childcare and the other should be working a job or multiple that pays for their living. If you can't get a real job, get a job that pays for an abortion because you shouldn't be raising a child you can't take care of.

I do have a W2 job, I am just part time. I don't want to go full time because I want to spend more time with the nephew but I got to bring in money somehow. If I get to make money from home I can just have him next to me while I work or on my lap.

I am NOT doing globohomo art, fuck that. Do you have an art job? I rather just have my current job, or figure out how to make my current art more popular.

It seems people here think the only ways to make moneys in art is globohomo or furry porn

It's not the ONLY way, but it's the EASIEST way.
If your art were already at a point where it's profitable, then you could draw whatever you want and make a living, but clearly you haven't been getting paid for art much.

If you want to work with tasteful art, then you have a few other routes, but they involve a lot of self-promotion.
- Start streaming (Twitch, Kick if you're daring) and use your personality as a hook. Or your nephew as a guilt-tripping factor to get donations; it takes a good while to build an audience. Create youtube videos as well with tips, tutorials, timelapses etc to play the algorithm game, one website feeds the other.
- Start selling commissions for random people. That depends on what you can draw and you will have to find communities where you can advertise yourself. Discords, Reddits, fucking Fiverr if you're desperate. There are some "middleman" websites for commissions that can also provide you some exposure, but expect to work for peanuts. If you are a nobody, you will need to spend 90% of your time self-advertising and 10% drawing, until you build momentum and returning clients;
- Go /trad/. Start painting physical works and find a way to get your shit sold. You don't need to be in touch with galleries and patrons, that's even lower than being a globohomo artist, but you have to sell your stuff. Find old people who want some flower or landscape decorations. Dog moms who want a painting of their petsons. Nerdy RPG players who'd be rich enough to commission an oil-painting of their tiefling. Proud couple looking for a portrait of their newborn. Local communities are the best, small towns have fair markets, bigger ones might involve having a "hub" place where you can get exposed and commissioned. Might need to do some freebies to shops to get in good terms. LOTS of networking required. Selling online is a slow grind, but possible.

tl;dr; PYW, let's see your range.

Btw: I'm assuming in my post that you have enough skill already.
If you want to get good FROM NOW, then you're shooting yourself on the foot, because you'll have to handle a baby and the hardest skill on this godforsaken planet to master.

If your part-time job can give you enough money to live frugally and you think art would be a good "work from home" investment, okay, but if you need money in the short term, then you better have some gains already.
