Honestly can barely recall this at all. There were listings like topsites but everyone linked each other organically in the various fandoms I visited. As for traction you're still going to need to pull visitors from your socials, and get them to visit your site with high res pics, full comics etc. Don't put all your shit on twitter and become the product for them, let them come to you where you have more control. Hell even a discord would be better than twitter these days
