When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction
to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help.
When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I just wanna ask, how do I study anatomy? I've not gotten into too much trouble so far by just copying what I see in the books, attempting to apply that into irl drawings and then making small notes about the mistakes I made.
Should I be watching certain youtubers (I've heard proko is pretty good for anatomy) and what books are useful for learning anatomy?

We aren’t drawing muscles and bones but their appearance on a 2d plane, we gotta be clever and use t intersection to show what stands behind what, Michael Hampton‘S book was really helpful in that regard while Karen’s Cushart’s perspective course will help you get the body to make sense with basic cylinders

You get a comment from some pre-/beg/ or low-/beg/ at best, telling you about a problem they spotted, and you just know that... no, that was drawn correctly. Awesome improvement. Don't forget how easy it is to change the emotion of the mouth. All of the emotion is controlled in the last 5% sides of the mouth.

Breast anatomy is also very important for your style. Your left breast is only connected by the top portion. Breasts hanging are connect until the bottom 30% of the breast. Breasts flying will be fully connected to the torso like your right/her left breast is. And even when breasts are flying, you will see fat ligaments of her pecs connecting the top of her breasts to her collarbone

There were once two students, one claimed he was too smart to be taught by anyone, he would reject any feedback that came from beneath him awaiting the day a master sage would give him pointers.
This very bright student had a friend, he wasn’t too bright or cunning but he would learn from the heavens and the earth, everything and every moment was a learning opportunity and he wouldn’t disdain taking advice even from his pupils once he rapidly outgrew his peers and achieved mastery.
A few decades went by and our two friends’ path cross again in a McDonald’s where the really bright yet unlucky genius never found any sage grandmaster to teach him the secret tips and tricks of the trade, but fortunately our unlucky genius was indeed very smart as he gave his old friend, now in his middle age with a successful career, dining out with his pupils their proper orders without a single fry missing.
The last thing he wondered about was whether he should have taken seriously a fellow beg’s advice all those decades ago...

It’s for me too, easy to fall in the same trap, but I recognised him from the thread before the last.
My advice doesn’t change, the vertical proportions keep him from properly painting the right shapes. It’s like trying to fit puzzle pieces in the wrong place, nothing will fit.
I also did it to thank him, seeing him relentlessly try to paint and learn how to paint with an utter disregard of drawing was an awakening moment.
You don’t really need that much drawing knowhow to get to painting, besides it’s basically moving the goalpost away until you feel ready. Chances are you will never be ready.
The anon posting the 25 years mantra doesn’t really understand the dark side of this fuckery, 1 hour, you are one step away from painting whatever you want yet you don’t have the balls to do it. Magnificent

Hi anon, if you gave feedback before I apologize because I did not see it. I am aware, and thanks for pointing out, about the issues with proportions. I'm doing this for a portraiture class, and so I'm wanting to improve in all areas. It's not that I don't want to improve my proportions, but I'm working on it already.

Doesn't mean I am not open to feedback on that as well. And yeah, I don't think any of us will ever be done practicing drawing, proportions, etc. I'm forcing myself to learn rendering and painting faces because I've always run away from it in the past. I used to always draw backgrounds and animals and avoided humans because I saw how I consistently messed up proportions of the face.

Anyway, thanks for reading my shitty blogpost, and genuinely thanks for sending feedback of all kinds.

you're doing incredible, anon. Your proportions are pretty much spot on at this point. Now, I would try to do more research into the anatomy of the body, specifically the shape of the bones and the flow of the muscles. Specifically pay attention to the roundness and wholeness of the skeleton.

is it a bad thing to copy other artists for my own art? sometimes I'll copy the way another artist draws his heads then I'll use a different one to copy because I like his colors and style

I think the reason I wanna copy is because I don't know how to stylize real life refs or push the pose. whenever I use a real person as ref it just looks likes an anime girls face on a real womans body

I think that's a bad habit. It's better to set aside 2 hours to study and make copies of artwork. Then, when you go do your original work, just draw out of your head. This will make you a better artist in the long run

But, David Finch and many other pros admit to copying artwork for their actual professional comic pages. Finch would take an arm from one artist, then the lighting from another artist, etc.

It's funny as fuck seeing you repeatedly do these redlines which completley miss the point of what anon was doing and introduce more problems than fixing them. You completely changed the orientation of the ribcage and overall proportions, especially with the elongated torso and legs. The t thing is in the Michael Hampton figure drawing book, it’s actually t overlaps and they are a tool to put masses in deep perspective.
How to use the anatomy studies? Practice hands, draw muscles and bones to get their forms try to name them on models and do tracings, ergojosh has a nice anatomy study guidemap about all the different kinds of exercises you can do at different levels of expertise.
Ideally you will find the anatomy knowledge meld into your own work gradually, allowing you to work much faster and with a steadier hand while also opening the doors to drawing/painting from imagination which is something you should dedicate yourself separately.
If you don’t you will end like proko, render very good but can’t draw a kangaroo from imagination/memory

Get a reference image, preferably from an anatomy book like Bridgman's. Import it onto your canvas. Make a study of it. Construct as usual, but pay attention to shapes and proportion of the Bridgman drawing you're studying. Drag your drawing over the reference. Is it off? Notice where it's off. Make another drawing, and drag it onto your reference again. Do this a hundred times. Don't move on from that reference image until you've got it pretty close. Then move onto another reference image from Bridgman's. Go through the whole Bridgman book this way.

What I'm saying is that most likely your problem is not form, but proportion. Getting things in the right place is the most difficult part of drawing. Good perspective is still largely a matter of good proportions

I'm willing to bet 99% of anons reading this post will think I've gone totally insane, and that's true. This is a madman's way of practicing drawing. This is the type of exercise you do when you're at your wit's end and feel like giving up on art. This is the exercise that will save you in your darkest times. However, seeing yourself get more and more accurate with every drawing is an objective measure of your improvement and will make you feel so good about your drawing

Another terrible day where I didn't sleep long enough, but whiile I was meant to be doing circle exercises, I ended up drawing this (she's Selmie from BOTW/TOTK).

It's very bad, but this is the first face I've actually really made a proper attempt at drawing. The picture is pretty flat, thanks to the angle, though I think the scarf looks relatively 3 dimension even if it looks pretty crude still.

Of course I entirely used the reference for this as none was drawn from imagination. I still can't really do clean nice lines either yet.

I think ultimately, my ability to actually draw when I felt like I couldn't at all a few weeks ago is merely because I wasn't doing it, as a result of drawing the Burne Hogarth references, my brain is starting to become wired to actually draw, hence why things like this are much easier for me to do now compared to just a few weeks ago.

Still, it's pretty poor. I know her eyes are technically symbols with the way they are drawn, I hope I can actually try drawing faces properly soon.
